TL;DR: In this paper, the authors introduce the theory of rational Dunkl operators and associated special functions, with an emphasis on positivity and asymptotics, and discuss integrable particle systems of the Calogero-Moser-Sutherland type.
Abstract: These lecture notes are intended as an introduction to the theory of rational Dunkl operators and the associated special functions, with an emphasis on positivity and asymptotics We start with an outline of the general concepts: Dunkl operators, the intertwining operator, the Dunkl kernel and the Dunkl transform We point out the connection with integrable particle systems of Calogero-Moser-Sutherland type, and discuss some systems of orthogonal polynomials associated with them A major part is devoted to positivity results for the intertwining operator and the Dunkl kernel, the Dunkl-type heat semigroup, and related probabilistic aspects The notes conclude with recent results on the asymptotics of the Dunkl kernel

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the Cauchy-davenport inequality for the cyclic group with constant cardinality can be improved to (1 + ε)-approximation, where ε is the cardinality.
Abstract: Let $G$ be a finite abelian group, and let $f: G \to \C$ be a complex function on $G$. The uncertainty principle asserts that the support $\supp(f) := \{x \in G: f(x) eq 0\}$ is related to the support of the Fourier transform $\hat f: G \to \C$ by the formula $$ |\supp(f)| |\supp(\hat f)| \geq |G|$$ where $|X|$ denotes the cardinality of $X$. In this note we show that when $G$ is the cyclic group $\Z/p\Z$ of prime order $p$, then we may improve this to $$ |\supp(f)| + |\supp(\hat f)| \geq p+1$$ and show that this is absolutely sharp. As one consequence, we see that a sparse polynomial in $\Z/p\Z$ consisting of $k+1$ monomials can have at most $k$ zeroes. Another consequence is a short proof of the well-known Cauchy-Davenport inequality.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed the theory of multiresolutions in the context of Hausdorff measure of fractional dimension between 0 and 1 and proved a dichotomy theorem.
Abstract: We develop the theory of multiresolutions in the context of Hausdorff measure of fractional dimension between 0 and 1. While our fractal wavelet theory has points of similarity that it shares with the standard case of Lebesgue measure on the line, there are also sharp contrasts. These are stated in our main result, a dichotomy theorem. The first section is the case of the middle-third Cantor set. This is followed by a review of the essentials on Hausdorff measure. The remaining sections of the paper cover multiresolutions in the general context of affine iterated function systems.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Haar and Shannon wavelets coincide and are localized both in time and in frequency, and the behavior of the translation operators required in the wavelet theory is studied.
Abstract: Using the wavelet theory introduced by the author and J. Benedetto, we present examples of wavelets on p-adic fields and other locally compact abelian groups with compact open subgroups. We observe that in this setting, the Haar and Shannon wavelets (which are at opposite extremes over the real numbers) coincide and are localized both in time and in frequency. We also study the behavior of the translation operators required in the theory.

Abstract: We survey various results and conjectures concerning multiple polylogarithms and the multiple zeta function. Among the results, we an- nounce our resolution of several conjectures on multiple zeta values. We also provide a new integral representation for the general multiple polylogarithm, and develop a q-analogue of the shuffle product.

TL;DR: In this paper, direct and inverse theorems were established for the best approximation in the weighted $L^p$ space on the unit sphere of $\RR^{d+1}$, in which the weight functions are invariant under finite reflection groups.
Abstract: The direct and inverse theorems are established for the best approximation in the weighted $L^p$ space on the unit sphere of $\RR^{d+1}$, in which the weight functions are invariant under finite reflection groups. The theorems are stated using a modulus of smoothness of higher order, which is proved to be equivalent to a $K$-functional defined using the power of the spherical $h$-Laplacian. Furthermore, similar results are also established for weighted approximation on the unit ball and on the simplex of $\RR^d$.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors study several constrained variational problems in the 2-Wasserstein metric for which the set of probability densities satisfying the constraint is not closed and prove existence of minimizers.
Abstract: We study several constrained variational problem in the 2-Wasserstein metric for which the set of probability densities satisfying the constraint is not closed. For example, given a probability density $F_0$ on $\R^d$ and a time-step $h>0$, we seek to minimize $I(F) = hS(F) + W_2^2(F_0,F)$ over all of the probability densities $F$ that have the same mean and variance as $F_0$, where $S(F)$ is the entropy of $F$. We prove existence of minimizers. We also analyze the induced geometry of the set of densities satisfying the constraint on the variance and means, and we determine all of the geodesics on it. From this, we determine a criterion for convexity of functionals in the induced geometry. It turns out, for example, that the entropy is uniformly strictly convex on the constrained manifold, though not uniformly convex without the constraint. The problems solved here arose in a study of a variational approach to constructing and studying solutions of the nonlinear kinetic Fokker-Planck equation, which is briefly described here and fully developed in a companion paper.

TL;DR: In this article, two unitary integral transforms with a very well poised $_7F_6$-function as a kernel are given, and the inverse is the same as the original transform after an involution on the parameters.
Abstract: Two unitary integral transforms with a very-well poised $_7F_6$-function as a kernel are given. For both integral transforms the inverse is the same as the original transform after an involution on the parameters. The $_7F_6$-function involved can be considered as a non-polynomial extension of the Wilson polynomial, and is therefore called a Wilson function. The two integral transforms are called a Wilson function transform of type I and type II. Furthermore, a few explicit transformations of hypergeometric functions are calculated, and it is shown that the Wilson function transform of type I maps a basis of orthogonal polynomials onto a similar basis of polynomials.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the asymptotic behavior of polynomials p, q, r of degrees n in type I Hermite-Pade approximation to the exponential function, defined by p(z)e^{-z}+q(z)+r(z} = O(z^{3n+2}) as z -> 0.
Abstract: We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the polynomials p, q, r of degrees n in type I Hermite-Pade approximation to the exponential function, defined by p(z)e^{-z}+q(z)+r(z)e^{z} = O(z^{3n+2}) as z -> 0. These polynomials are characterized by a Riemann-Hilbert problem for a 3x3 matrix valued function. We use the Deift-Zhou steepest descent method for Riemann-Hilbert problems to obtain strong uniform asymptotics for the scaled polynomials p(3nz), q(3nz), and r(3nz) in every domain in the complex plane. An important role is played by a three-sheeted Riemann surface and certain measures and functions derived from it. Our work complements recent results of Herbert Stahl.

TL;DR: Chang and Chang as mentioned in this paper showed that for the case of two complex variables, the weak factorization of a Hankel operator with symbol $b is equivalent to the weak-factorization of the Fefferman product.
Abstract: $H^2\zProd$ denotes the Hardy space of square integrable functions analytic in each variable separately. Let $P^{\ominus}$ be the natural projection of $L^2\zProd$ onto $\z8{H^2\zProd}$. A Hankel operator with symbol $b$ is the linear operator from $H^2\zProd$ to $\z8{H^2\zProd}$ given by $H_b \zvf=P^{\ominus}\bar b \zvf$. We show that \md0 orm H_b ..\simeq orm P^{\oplus}b.BMO\zProd., \emd where the right hand norm is S.-Y. Chang and R. Fefferman product $BMO$. This fact has well known equivalences in terms of commutators and the weak factorization of $H^1\zProd$. In the case of two complex variables, this is due to Ferguson and Lacey \cite{MR1961195}. While the current proof is inductive, and one can take the one complex variable case as the basis step, it is heavily influenced by the methods of Ferguson and Lacey. The induction is carried out with a particular form of a lemma due to Journe \cite{MR87g:42028}, which occurs implicitly in the work of J. Pipher \cite{MR88a:42019}.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proved that the maximal operator of a Schwartz function with frequency support in the annulus can map the Hilbert transform of the Schwartz function in the direction of a non-zero Schwartz function to a weak Schwartz function.
Abstract: For a Schwartz function $f$ on the plane and a non-zero $v\in\ZR^2$ define the Hilbert transform of $f$ in the direction $v$ to be $$ H_vf(x)=\text{p.v.}\int_\ZR f(x-vy) \frac{dy}y $$ Let $\zeta$ be a Schwartz function with frequency support in the annulus $1\le| \xi|\le2$. We prove that the maximal operator $$ \sup_{\abs v=1}\abs{H_v{\zeta}* f} $$ maps $L^2$ into weak $L^2$, and $L^p$ into $L^p$ for $p>2$. The $L^2$ estimate is sharp. The method of proof is based upon techniques related to the pointwise convergence of Fourier series, especially the recent proof given by Lacey and Thiele.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors apply Baxter's method of the Q-operator to the set of commuting partial differential operators and show that they are eigenfunctions of a one-parameter family of integral operators Q_z.
Abstract: Applying Baxter's method of the Q-operator to the set of Sekiguchi's commuting partial differential operators we show that Jack polynomials P(x_1,...,x_n) are eigenfunctions of a one-parameter family of integral operators Q_z. The operators Q_z are expressed in terms of the Dirichlet-Liouville n-dimensional beta integral. From a composition of n operators Q_{z_k} we construct an integral operator S_n factorising Jack polynomials into products of hypergeometric polynomials of one variable. The operator S_n admits a factorisation described in terms of restricted Jack polynomials P(x_1,...,x_k,1,...,1). Using the operator Q_z for z=0 we give a simple derivation of a previously known integral representation for Jack polynomials.

TL;DR: In this paper, two models describing different aspects of growth cone guidance are presented. But neither of these models can describe the internal switch that determines the direction of movement of a growth cone in any environment.
Abstract: Aerotaxis is the particular form of chemotaxis in which oxygen plays the role of both the attractant and the repellent. Aerotaxis occurs without methylation adaptation, and it leads to fast and complete aggregation toward the most favorable oxygen concentration. Biochemical pathways of aerotaxis remain largely elusive, however, aerotactic pattern formation is well documented. This allows mathematical modeling to test plausible hypotheses about the biochemical mechanisms. Our model demonstrates that assuming fast, non-methylation adaptation produces theoretical results that are consistent with experimental observations. We obtain analytical estimates for parameter values that are difficult to obtain experimentally. Chemotaxis in growth cones differs from gradient sensing in other animal cells, because growth cones can change their attractive or repulsive response to the same chemical gradient based on their internal calcium or cAMP levels. We create two models describing different aspects of growth cone guidance. One model describes the internal switch that determines the direction of movement. However, this model allows chemotaxis under certain conditions only, so a second model is created to propose a mechanism that allows growth cone guidance in any environment. Endothelial cells go through extensive morphological changes when exposed to shear stress due to blood flow. These morphological changes are thought to be at least partially the result of mechanical signals, such as deformations, transmitted to the cell structures. Our model describes an endothelial cell as a network of viscoelastic Kelvin bodies with experimentally obtained parameters. Qualitative predictions of the model agree with experiments.

From this result, we deduce new multivariable terminating 10-phi-9 transformations, 8-phi-7 summations and other identities. Abstract: We give a new proof of a theorem of Zudilin that equates a very-well-poised hypergeometric series and a particular multiple integral. This integral generalizes integrals of Vasilenko and Vasilyev which were proposed as tools in the study of the arithmetic behaviour of values of the Riemann zeta function at integers. Our proof is based on limiting cases of a basic hypergeometric identity of Andrews.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied properties of q-Jacobi polynomials and their duals by means of operators of the discrete series representations for the quantum algebra U_q(su 1, 1).
Abstract: This paper studies properties of q-Jacobi polynomials and their duals by means of operators of the discrete series representations for the quantum algebra U_q(su_{1,1}). Spectrum and eigenfunctions of these operators are found explicitly. These eigenfunctions, when normalized, form an orthogonal basis in the representation space. The initial U_q(su_{1,1})-basis and the bases of these eigenfunctions are interconnected by matrices, whose entries are expressed in terms of little and big q-Jacobi polynomials. The orthogonality by rows in these unitary connection matrices leads to the orthogonality relations for little and big q-Jacobi polynomials. The orthogonality by columns in the connection matrices leads to an explicit form of orthogonality relations on the countable set of points for {}_3\phi_2 and {}_3\phi_1 polynomials, which are dual to big and little q-Jacobi polynomials, respectively. The orthogonality measure for the dual little q-Jacobi polynomials proves to be extremal, whereas the measure for the dual big q-Jacobi polynomials is not extremal.

The classical uncertainty Gabor-Heisenberg principle is revisited and the concept of isoresolution in joint time-frequency analysis is introduced. It is shown that any Fourier eigenfunction achieve isoresolution. It is shown that an isoresolution wavelet can be derived from each known wavelet family by a suitable scaling.
