TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that Bernoulli percolation clusters admit invariant random subgraphs with positive isoperimetric constant and bounded harmonic Dirichlet functions.
Abstract: We show that on a Cayley graph of a nonamenable group, almost surely the infinite clusters of Bernoulli percolation are transient for simple random walk, that simple random walk on these clusters has positive speed, and that these clusters admit bounded harmonic functions. A principal new finding on which these results are based is that such clusters admit invariant random subgraphs with positive isoperimetric constant. We also show that percolation clusters in any amenable Cayley graph almost surely admit no nonconstant harmonic Dirichlet functions. Conversely, on a Cayley graph admitting nonconstant harmonic Dirichlet functions, almost surely the infinite clusters of $p$-Bernoulli percolation also have nonconstant harmonic Dirichlet functions when $p$ is sufficiently close to 1. Many conjectures and questions are presented.

TL;DR: In this paper, an upper bound on the mixing rate of a dynamical system defined by the one-sided shift and a non-Hlder potential of summable variations is presented.
Abstract: We present an upper bound on the mixing rate of the equilibrium state of a dynamical systems defined by the one-sided shift and a non H\"{o}lder potential of summable variations. The bound follows from an estimation of the relaxation speed of chains with complete connections with summable decay, which is obtained via a explicit coupling between pairs of chains with different histories.

Abstract: Sufficient conditions are given for existence and uniqueness in Smoluchowski's coagulation equation, for a wide class of coagulation kernels and initial mass distributions. An example of non-uniqueness is constructed. The stochastic coalescent is shown to converge weakly to the solution of Smoluchowski's equation.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to provide a both comprehensive and summarizing account on recent results about analysis and geometry on configuration spaces $\Gamma_X$ over Riemannian manifolds $X$. Particular emphasis is given to a complete description of the so--called ``lifting--procedure'', Markov resp. strong resp. $L^1$--uniqueness results, the non--conservative case, the interpretation of the constructed diffusions as solutions of the respective classical ``heuristic'' stochastic differential equations, and a self--contained presentation of a general closability result for the corresponding pre--Dirichlet forms. The latter is presented in the general case of arbitrary (not necessarily pair) potentials describing the singular interactions. A support property for the diffusions, the intrinsic metric, and a Rademacher theorem on $\Gamma_X$, recently proved, are also discussed.

TL;DR: For a class of one-dimensional cellular automata, the invariant measures (in particular, all invariant phase separation measures), the rate of convergence to equilibrium, and the derivation of the hydrodynamic limit were studied in this paper.
Abstract: For a class of one-dimensional cellular automata, we review and complete the characterization of the invariant measures (in particular, all invariant phase separation measures), the rate of convergence to equilibrium, and the derivation of the hydrodynamic limit. The most widely known representatives of this class of automata are: Automaton 184 from the classification of S. Wolfram, an annihilating particle system and a surface growth model.

TL;DR: In this article, an Lipschitz measure on a Riemannian manifold was shown to be contained in a Dirichlet space associated with a measure on the configuration space.
Abstract: We consider an $L^2$-Wasserstein type distance $\rho$ on the configuration space $\Gamma_X$ over a Riemannian manifold $X$, and we prove that $\rho$-Lipschitz functions are contained in a Dirichlet space associated with a measure on $\Gamma_X$ satisfying some general assumptions. These assumptions are in particular fulfilled by a large class of tempered grandcanonical Gibbs measures with respect to a superstable lower regular pair potential. As an application we prove a criterion in terms of $\rho$ for a set to be exceptional. This result immediately implies, for instance, a quasi-sure version of the spatial ergodic theorem. We also show that $\rho$ is optimal in the sense that it is the intrinsic metric of our Dirichlet form.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that a large class of events in a product probability space are highly sensitive to noise, in the sense that with high probability, the configuration with an arbitrary small percent of random errors gives almost no prediction whether the event occurs.
Abstract: It is shown that a large class of events in a product probability space are highly sensitive to noise, in the sense that with high probability, the configuration with an arbitrary small percent of random errors gives almost no prediction whether the event occurs. On the other hand, weighted majority functions are shown to be noise-stable. Several necessary and sufficient conditions for noise sensitivity and stability are given. Consider, for example, bond percolation on an $n+1$ by $n$ grid. A configuration is a function that assigns to every edge the value 0 or 1. Let $\omega$ be a random configuration, selected according to the uniform measure. A crossing is a path that joins the left and right sides of the rectangle, and consists entirely of edges $e$ with $\omega(e)=1$. By duality, the probability for having a crossing is 1/2. Fix an $\epsilon\in(0,1)$. For each edge $e$, let $\omega'(e)=\omega(e)$ with probability $1-\epsilon$, and $\omega'(e)=1-\omega(e)$ with probability $\epsilon$, independently of the other edges. Let $p(\tau)$ be the probability for having a crossing in $\omega$, conditioned on $\omega'=\tau$. Then for all $n$ sufficiently large, $P\{\tau : |p(\tau)-1/2|>\epsilon\}<\epsilon$.

TL;DR: In this paper, a general formulation for the scaling limits of stochastic spanning trees is presented, where a spanning tree is expressed in this limit through a consistent collection of subtrees, which includes a tree for every finite set of endpoints in $\R^d$.
Abstract: A general formulation is presented for continuum scaling limits of stochastic spanning trees. A spanning tree is expressed in this limit through a consistent collection of subtrees, which includes a tree for every finite set of endpoints in $\R^d$. Tightness of the distribution, as $\delta \to 0$, is established for the following two-dimensional examples: the uniformly random spanning tree on $\delta \Z^2$, the minimal spanning tree on $\delta \Z^2$ (with random edge lengths), and the Euclidean minimal spanning tree on a Poisson process of points in $\R^2$ with density $\delta^{-2}$. In each case, sample trees are proven to have the following properties, with probability one with respect to any of the limiting measures: i) there is a single route to infinity (as was known for $\delta > 0$), ii) the tree branches are given by curves which are regular in the sense of Holder continuity, iii) the branches are also rough, in the sense that their Hausdorff dimension exceeds one, iv) there is a random dense subset of $\R^2$, of dimension strictly between one and two, on the complement of which (and only there) the spanning subtrees are unique with continuous dependence on the endpoints, v) branching occurs at countably many points in $\R^2$, and vi) the branching numbers are uniformly bounded. The results include tightness for the loop erased random walk (LERW) in two dimensions. The proofs proceed through the derivation of scale-invariant power bounds on the probabilities of repeated crossings of annuli.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a probabilistic method to study measures on ensembles of contours, polymers or other objects interacting by some sort of exclusion condition, which can be applied even in the absence of analyticity properties.
Abstract: We present a new approach to study measures on ensembles of contours, polymers or other objects interacting by some sort of exclusion condition. For concreteness we develop it here for the case of Peierls contours. Unlike existing methods, which are based on cluster-expansion formalisms and/or complex analysis, our method is strictly probabilistic and hence can be applied even in the absence of analyticity properties. It involves a Harris graphical construction of a loss network for which the measure of interest is invariant. The existence of the process and its mixing properties depend on the absence of infinite clusters for a dual (backwards) oriented percolation process which we dominate by a multitype branching process. Within the region of subcriticality of this branching process the approach yields: (i) exponential convergence to the equilibrium (=contour) measures, (ii) standard clustering and finite-effect properties of the contour measure, (iii) a particularly strong form of the central limit theorem, and (iv) a Poisson approximation for the distribution of contours at low temperature.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors survey the author's attempts to find and understand canonical probabilistic entities in a local field (e.g. p-adic) setting, and propose answers to the related questions: ''What are the analogues for Gaussian measures?'' and ''What can be derived from Brownian motion and its multiparameter relatives?''
Abstract: These are lecture notes from a course given at the CRM in Montreal in 1992. They survey the author's attempts to find and understand canonical probabilistic entities in a local field (e.g. p-adic) setting. We propose answers to the related questions: ``What are the analogues for Gaussian measures?'' and ``What are the analogues for Brownian motion and its multiparameter relatives?'' There is a suitable concept of orthogonality in the local field setting, and one can mimic a classical abstract definition of Euclidean Gaussian measures. The resulting theory is, in some sense, an L^\infty rather than an L^2 one; and so although there are many similarities to the Euclidean case there are also some striking differences. Local field Brownian motion is the most natural local field Gaussian process that takes values in a local field vector space and is indexed by another local field vector space. Characterising the polar sets for such processes lead us to study the notion of additive functionals or homogeneous random measures and a related Riesz-like potential theory. We study local times, show they can be recovered by counterparts of classical intrinsic contstructions using dilation and Hausdorff measures, and establish an analogue of Trotter's theorem. We finish with a discussion of random series with local field Gaussian coefficients. Although we show that there are broad classes of random series which are stationary, we also find that there is no obvious counterpart of the representation of a general stationary Gaussian process on the circle as a random Fourier series.

TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that a random compact metric space that is naturally associated to an infinite family of coalescing Brownian motions on the circle has Hausdorff and packing dimension both almost surely equal to 1/2 and moreover, this space is capacity equivalent to the middle-1/2 Cantor set (and hence also to the Brownian zero set).
Abstract: Analogues of stepping--stone models are considered where the site--space is continuous, the migration process is a general Markov process, and the type--space is infinite. Such processes were defined in previous work of the second author by specifying a Feller transition semigroup in terms of expectations of suitable functionals for systems of coalescing Markov processes. An alternative representation is obtained here in terms of a limit of interacting particle systems. It is shown that, under a mild condition on the migration process, the continuum--sites stepping--stone process has continuous sample paths. The case when the migration process is Brownian motion on the circle is examined in detail using a duality relation between coalescing and annihilating Brownian motion. This duality relation is also used to show that a random compact metric space that is naturally associated to an infinite family of coalescing Brownian motions on the circle has Hausdorff and packing dimension both almost surely equal to 1/2 and, moreover, this space is capacity equivalent to the middle--1/2 Cantor set (and hence also to the Brownian zero set).

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a martingale related to the exit measures of super-Brownian motion, which is shown to be identical to a measure generated by a non-homogeneous branching particle system with immigration of mass.
Abstract: In this paper we present a martingale related to the exit measures of super-Brownian motion. By changing measure with this martingale in the canonical way we have a new process associated with the conditioned exit measure. This measure is shown to be identical to a measure generated by a non-homogeneous branching particle system with immigration of mass. An application is given to the problem of conditioning the exit measure to hit a number of specified points on the boundary of a domain. The results are similar in flavor to the "immortal particle" picture of conditioned super-Brownian motion but more general, as the change of measure is given by a martingale which need not arise from a single harmonic function.

Abstract: Strong and Markov uniqueness problems in $L^2$ for Dirichlet operators on rigged Hilbert spaces are studied. An analytic approach based on a--priori estimates is used. The extension of the problem to the $L^p$-setting is discussed. As a direct application essential self--adjointness and strong uniqueness in $L^p$ is proved for the generator (with initial domain the bounded smooth cylinder functions) of the stochastic quantization process for Euclidean quantum field theory in finite volume $\Lambda \subset \R^2$.

TL;DR: Benjamini and Lee as mentioned in this paper showed that if there is a time t > 0 such that, for each x, the conditional distribution of (X_s) 0 < s < t, given X_0 = x = X_t, and given Y_s 0 = X-t, given Y-t = x-m = Y-m, then the infinitesimal generators of X and Y are related by [L^Y]f = \psi^{-1}[L^X](\psi f)-\lambda f,
Abstract: Let X and Y be time-homogeneous Markov processes with common state space E, and assume that the transition kernels of X and Y admit densities with respect to suitable reference measures. We show that if there is a time t>0 such that, for each x\in E, the conditional distribution of (X_s)_{0 < s < t}, given X_0 = x = X_t, coincides with the conditional distribution of (Y_s)_{0 < s < t}, given Y_0 = x = Y_t, then the infinitesimal generators of X and Y are related by [L^Y]f = \psi^{-1}[L^X](\psi f)-\lambda f, where \psi is an eigenfunction of L^X with eigenvalue \lambda. Under an additional continuity hypothesis, the same conclusion obtains assuming merely that X and Y share a ``bridge'' law for one triple (x,t,y). Our work entends and clarifies a recent result of I. Benjamini and S. Lee.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the technical foundations from stochastic differential geometry for the construction of geometrically intrinsic nonlinear recursive filters, where a diffusion X on a manifold N is run for a time interval T, with a random initial condition, and the noise covariance of X and the observation covariance themselves induce geometries on M and N, respectively.
Abstract: This paper contains the technical foundations from stochastic differential geometry for the construction of geometrically intrinsic nonlinear recursive filters. A diffusion X on a manifold N is run for a time interval T, with a random initial condition. There is a single observation consisting of a nonlinear function of X(T), corrupted by noise, and with values in another manifold M. The noise covariance of X and the observation covariance themselves induce geometries on M and N, respectively. Using these geometries we compute approximate but coordinate-free formulas for the "best estimate" of X(T), given the observation, and its conditional variance. Calculations are based on use of Jacobi fields and of "intrinsic location parameters", a notion derived from the heat flow of harmonic mappings. When any nonlinearity is present, the resulting formulas are not the same as those for the continuous-discrete Extended Kalman Filter. A subsidiary result is a formula for computing approximately the "exponential barycenter" of a random variable S on a manifold, i.e. a point z such that the inverse image of S under the exponential map at z has mean zero in the tangent space at z.

Abstract: We study p-adic counterparts of stable distributions, that is limit distributions for sequences of normalized sums of independent identically distributed p-adic-valued random variables. In contrast to the classical case, non-degenerate limit distributions can be obtained only under certain assumptions on the asymptotic behaviour of the number of summands in the approximating sums. This asymptotics determines the ``exponent of stability''.

Abstract: We give a comparison inequality that allows one to estimate the tail probabilities of sums of independent Banach space valued random variables in terms of those of independent identically distributed random variables. More precisely, let X_1,...,X_n be independent Banach-valued random variables. Let I be a random variable independent of X_1,...,X_n and uniformly distributed over {1,...,n}. Put Z_1 = X_I, and let Z_2,...,Z_n be independent identically distributed copies of Z_1. Then, P(||X_1+...+X_n|| > t) t/c), for all t>0, where c is an absolute constant.

Abstract: We show that when percolation produces infinitely many infinite clusters on a Cayley graph, one cannot distinguish the clusters from each other by any invariantly defined property. This implies that uniqueness of the infinite cluster is equivalent to non-decay of connectivity (a.k.a. long-range order). We then derive applications concerning uniqueness in Kazhdan groups and in wreath products, and inequalities for $p_u$.
