TL;DR: This class is characterized by the introduction of an internal dynamic variable, which motivates the proposed name of dynamic event triggering mechanism, and a lower bound on the inter-execution time as a function of the parameters is established.
Abstract: In this paper, we present a new class of event triggering mechanisms for event-triggered control systems. This class is characterized by the introduction of an internal dynamic variable, which motivates the proposed name of dynamic event triggering mechanism. The stability of the resulting closed loop system is proved and the influence of design parameters on the decay rate of the Lyapunov function is discussed. For linear systems, we establish a lower bound on the inter-execution time as a function of the parameters. The influence of these parameters on a quadratic integral performance index is also studied. Some simulation results are provided for illustration of the theoretical claims.

TL;DR: A unified algorithmic framework is introduced for incremental methods for minimizing a sum P m=1 fi(x) consisting of a large number of convex component functions fi, including the advantages offered by randomization in the selection of components.
Abstract: We survey incremental methods for minimizing a sum P m=1 fi(x) consisting of a large number of convex component functions fi. Our methods consist of iterations applied to single components, and have proved very effective in practice. We introduce a unified algorithmic framework for a variety of such methods, some involving gradient and subgradient iterations, which are known, and some involving combinations of subgradient and proximal methods, which are new and offer greater flexibility in exploiting the special structure of fi. We provide an analysis of the convergence and rate of convergence properties of these methods, including the advantages offered by randomization in the selection of components. We also survey applications in inference/machine learning, signal processing, and large-scale and distributed optimization.

TL;DR: The paper proposes a framework for modeling and analysis of the dynamics of supply, demand, and clearing prices in power systems with real-time retail pricing and information asymmetry and highlights the need for assessing architecture systematically and in advance to optimally strike the trade-offs between volatility/robustness and performance metrics such as economic efficiency and environmental efficiency.
Abstract: The paper proposes a framework for modeling and analysis of the dynamics of supply, demand, and clearing prices in power system with real-time retail pricing and information asymmetry. Real-time retail pricing is characterized by passing on the real-time wholesale electricity prices to the end consumers, and is shown to create a closed-loop feedback system between the physical layer and the market layer of the power system. In the absence of a carefully designed control law, such direct feedback between the two layers could increase volatility and lower the system's robustness to uncertainty in demand and generation. A new notion of generalized price-elasticity is introduced, and it is shown that price volatility can be characterized in terms of the system's maximal relative price elasticity, defined as the maximal ratio of the generalized price-elasticity of consumers to that of the producers. As this ratio increases, the system becomes more volatile, and eventually, unstable. As new demand response technologies and distributed storage increase the price-elasticity of demand, the architecture under examination is likely to lead to increased volatility and possibly instability. This highlights the need for assessing architecture systematically and in advance, in order to optimally strike the trade-offs between volatility, economic efficiency, and system reliability.

TL;DR: It is proved that the EV charging station placement problem is nondeterministic polynomial-time hard and four solution methods are proposed to tackle EVCSPP, and their performance on various artificial and practical cases are evaluated.
Abstract: To enhance environmental sustainability, many countries will electrify their transportation systems in their future smart city plans. So the number of electric vehicles (EVs) running in a city will grow significantly. There are many ways to re-charge EVs' batteries and charging stations will be considered as the main source of energy. The locations of charging stations are critical; they should not only be pervasive enough such that an EV anywhere can easily access a charging station within its driving range, but also widely spread so that EVs can cruise around the whole city upon being re-charged. Based on these new perspectives, we formulate the Electric Vehicle Charging Station Placement Problem (EVCSPP) in this paper. We prove that the problem is non-deterministic polynomial-time hard. We also propose four solution methods to tackle EVCSPP and evaluate their performance on various artificial and practical cases. As verified by the simulation results, the methods have their own characteristics and they are suitable for different situations depending on the requirements for solution quality, algorithmic efficiency, problem size, nature of the algorithm, and existence of system prerequisite.
