TL;DR: The authors analyzes the three fundamental processes of China's economic reforms (decentralization, marketization, and globalization) and argues that an understanding of these triple transitions is necessary for a better understanding of regional development in China.
Abstract: China since the late 1970s has implemented a series of reforms and has undergone profound changes. This paper analyzes the three fundamental processes of China's economic reforms—decentralization, marketization, and globalization, and argues that an understanding of these triple transitions is necessary for a better understanding of regional development in China. These changes also have had significant implications for the development of regions, as the central state is no longer monopolizing the regional development process. It is speculated that China's regions will remain fragmented and the coastal-interior divide may persist.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the magnitude of changes in agricultural land use intensity across regions in a geographical perspective, in terms of the intensity indicators defined, and provided an explanation for the regional disparity.
Abstract: Rapid economic development following the 1978 reforms is well reflected in agricultural land use changes in China. By investigating the magnitude of changes in agricultural land use intensity across regions in a geographical perspective, in terms of the intensity indicators defined, explanation for the regional disparity is provided. An important implication is that economic comparative profit drives farmers to increase the intensity level for agricultural production in the western provinces at present but not forever. Lower incentive for raising agricultural land use intensity may more seriously threaten food security than the shrinking farmland area or lower technological potential.

TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors provided a systematic account of the profiles of migrants in urban villages and explored their sentiments towards the community as revealed by the levels of community satisfaction and community attachment.
Abstract: The hundreds of millions of migrant workers from China's vast rural hinterlands today constitute a significant part of the urban labour force. Residence in urban villages, to them, is a preferred and in most cases the only affordable choice. This study provides a systematic account of the profiles of migrants in urban villages and explores their sentiments towards the community as revealed by the levels of community satisfaction and community attachment. The results show that, while the urban villages offer no more than a shelter, migrants in such villages are integrated into the city in a certain manner. Community sentiments are mainly built upon the perceptions of neighbourhood quality and neighbourly relations, in addition to the effects of local involvement as well as migrants' social networks within the community.

TL;DR: In this article, the influence of cultural distance on tourism flows from a macro perspective was investigated and three models were investigated including a traditional tourism demand model, a gravity model, and a mixed panel data gravity model with different sets of relevant variables.
Abstract: This study focuses on the analysis of the determinants of China inbound tourism flows and seeks to determine the influence of cultural distance on tourism flows from a macro perspective. Three models were investigated including a traditional tourism demand model, a gravity model, and a mixed panel data gravity model with different sets of relevant variables. The result confirmed that cultural distance, measured by social axioms at the country level, had a significant negative effect on inbound tourism flows. In addition, the moderation effect of uncertainty avoidance on cultural distance is revealed in the findings. Differences in income elasticities and impacts of cultural and geographical distances between western and eastern countries of tourist origin are also found in this study.

TL;DR: Zhang et al. as discussed by the authors examined the so-called "government led but market oriented operation" of a new city center development process in Hangzhou and revealed the applicability and variations when applying the concept of urban entrepreneurialism to a socialist economy in transition.
Abstract: Politico-economic landscapes in China have experienced profound changes since the late 1970s. Local governments have transformed their role in urban governance from conventional regulator to entrepreneurial agent. Entrepreneurial urban governance defines the relationships between local government and other interest groups in the urban development process. These issues can be most clearly observed in mega urban project development. Using entrepreneurial urban governance as an analytical approach, this study examines the so-called “government led but market oriented operation” of a new city center development process in Hangzhou. The study uncovered a dominant role of local government in entrepreneurial urban governance, which featured participation by other interest groups. The study also revealed the applicability and variations when applying the concept of urban entrepreneurialism to a socialist economy in transition. Issues concerning development motivations and strategies, civil society, amphibious ins...
