TL;DR: In this article, a descriptive research was conducted to identify the factors influence the green purchase intention and to determine the relationships between the factors (determinants) and green purchasing intention among Malaysian consumers.
Abstract: The objectives of this research are to identify the factors influence the green purchase intention and to determine the relationships between the factors (determinants) and green purchase intention among Malaysian consumers. A descriptive research was conducted to address the research objectives. The survey research was undertaken among the Malaysians who are members of one of the Activist Groups in which is a Non-government Organization (NGO) in Malaysia. The adopted sampling method was simple random sampling. There were 230 usable questionnaires which were analyzed with the Statistical Package for Social Science Software version 19. Five hypotheses were developed for this research and all hypotheses were tested using Pearson Correlation Analysis and Multiple Regression Analysis. The results of the study indicated that government initiative has the most significant influence on green purchase intention among Malaysian consumers. In contrast, eco-label failed to show significant relationship to green purchase intention. The finding of insignificant impact of eco-label on the green purchase intention from this study is in contrast with the finding from Nik Abdul Rashid (2009) because both studies were carried out among Malaysian consumers.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reviewed the country of origin literature and mention different variables that influence consumer purchase intention, and also highlight the relationship of variables and customer purchase intention based on the previous literature.
Abstract: Country of origin has become a significant phenomenon in consumer behaviour studies. Hence, increasing the knowledge of customers about products makes research about factors that influence their decisions more worthwhile than before. The purpose of this paper is to review the country of origin literature and mention different variables that influence consumer purchase intention, and also highlight the relationship of variables and customer purchase intention based on the previous literature. This research is valuable for promoting the consumer behaviour literature and providing support for relationships between the variables and purchase intention. In addition, it also helps marketers who work on related topics according to the country of origin perspective. The existing literature shows that all of the variables mentioned in this paper have a relationship with customer purchase intention from the country of origin point of view. However, there are many factors for which it has not been determined whether they influence consumer purchase intention related to the country of origin issue and there is wide scope for future research and development.

TL;DR: This paper investigated ESL learners' participation in an information-sharing task conducted via Facebook (FB) groups and their feedback on the use of FB groups as the platform for the activity, and they found that learners' substantial contribution to the group discussion despite their limited language ability and technical problems.
Abstract: This study aims to investigate ESL learners’ participation in an information-sharing task conducted via Facebook (FB) groups and their feedback on the use of FB groups as the platform for the activity. An intact group of 31 learners taking a communication course at a public university participated in the study. Data analysed in this paper were derived from a threaded online discussion and an open-ended questionnaire. Descriptive statistical analysis showed the learners’ substantial contribution to the group discussion despite their limited language ability and technical problems. Thematic analysis revealed that the use of FB as a platform for the information-sharing task received very positive feedback from the participants, thus suggesting it would be a promising virtual tool and environment to promote interaction in English learning. More activities using FB groups should be assigned for learners to practice and use communicative language. Promoting awareness of available online tools and modelling effective use of the tools are suggested to help enhance learners’ online interactions.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the type and frequency of language learning strategies used by Saudi EFL students and found that the students used cognitive and metacognitive strategies the most, whereas they showed the least use of affective strategies and memory strategies.
Abstract: This study investigates the type and frequency of language learning strategies used by Saudi EFL students. The subjects were 701 male and female Saudi EFL students enrolled in an intensive English language program at the University of Ha’il. The Oxford Strategies Inventory of Language Learning (SILL) was used with some modifications. The study seeks to extend our knowledge by examining the relationship between the use of language learning strategies (LLS) and gender and proficiency level. The results revealed that the students used language learning strategies with low to medium frequency. They preferred to use cognitive and metacognitive strategies the most, whereas they showed the least use of affective strategies and memory strategies. The findings of the study showed that there was no significant gender difference in the use of language learning strategies except for social strategies, as where females reported using them significantly more than males. Female students also tend to use overall language learning strategies more often than males. Moreover, the results revealed that highly proficient students used all six categories more than low-proficiency students. The paper concludes by recommending that more training should be given in using all strategies by embedding them in regular classroom activities. Suggestions are offered for future research.

TL;DR: In this article, a survey was conducted to find the level of awareness and perception on green living amongst Malaysian youth through the use of advertising, and the main objective was to explore awareness and perceptions of Malaysian youth towards green advertising promoted by the government.
Abstract: The study determines to find the level of awareness and perception on green living amongst Malaysian youth through the use of advertising. The main objective is to explore awareness and perception of Malaysian youth towards green advertising promoted by the government. A survey was conducted to gather responses from online respondents using the social media website. Three hundred and twenty respondents have responded to the six month survey time, to a 20 questions questionnaire. The result indicates that, generally, the Malaysian youth have some awareness on what the term ‘green living’ denotes. However, those who practice green living are lower. They have been exposed to green advertising, but not all practice green living due to the lack of comprehensive understanding of the concept. The Malaysian youth exhibit positive perception towards green advertising. The finding concludes that there is a need for current and upcoming green advertising, especially ones that are done by the government to improve on their message delivery, creativity and information for the youth to respond in practice.

TL;DR: In this paper, a qualitative research design was utilized, involving primary interview data collected through 16 key informant interviews of employers in the public sector in Kuantan and Johor Bahru.
Abstract: Past studies on employability of graduates have placed great emphasis on the supply side efforts in generic skills development which includes the tertiary curriculum design and delivery mechanisms. However, the responsibility of employers in providing training to prospective graduates and collaborating with universities in enhancing generic skills has been raised. On the demand side, there are numerous studies that have examined employer’s perspective in the private sector but few studies have examined employer’s perspective in the public sector. The objectives in this study are twofold: (1) to identify employers’ perception of the ideal generic skills that graduate employees should possess, and (2) to elicit employers’ perception of the lack of generic skills that prospective graduates (i.e. industrial trainees) currently possess. A qualitative research design was utilized, involving primary interview data collected through 16 key informant interviews of employers in the public sector in Kuantan and Johor Bahru. These key informant employers were selected from the UKM’s social science industrial trainees who attended training at these two sites. These interview data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings indicate that there are specific generic skills in the area of information and social interaction skills that the public sector employers seek from the graduates. This study implies the need for a stakeholder-responsibility approach in prescribing a comprehensive normative solution to the employability of graduates. In addition, it also postulates that the culture of learning and gaining varied skills in different spheres of life need to be inculcated amongst students from early years.

TL;DR: In this article, a simple checklist form was developed to quantify the information from ads into quantitative data that was later keyed in the Statistical Package for Social Science for descriptive analyses, which concluded that graduates with bachelor degrees were more likely to be employable due to high demand.
Abstract: In Malaysia, there is a profusion of evidence of high graduate unemployment since many graduates are found lacking of what are needed to acquire and to maintain their jobs. In this paper, graduate employability skills were analyzed based on four major criteria: qualification, academic score, experience and specific soft skills. The data and information used were extracted from 300 online job advertisements accessed via electronic databases at http://www.JobStreet.com.my from January to March 2011. A simple checklist form was developed to quantify the information from ads into quantitative data that was later keyed in the Statistical Package for Social Science for descriptive analyses. Based on the data, it was concluded that graduates with bachelor degrees were more likely to be employable due to high demand. It was also found that academic excellence based on CGPA was not the utmost factor for graduate employability. However, since less than one-third ads were free from work experiences requirement, fresh graduates only secured a little chance to be recruited. Another factor that limited graduates employability was high demand of specific soft skills requested by employers, among which were graduates with high quality of communication/interpersonal skills, foreign language proficiency, ICT/technical skills, high spirit of teamwork and specific personal attributes. Results concluded that graduate unemployment rate will continue to increase unless the Higher Education Institution (HEI) and the graduates are prepared to sharpen their soft skills according to market niche. It is suggested that the HEI work more closely with industries, professional bodies and society through the establishment of university-industry link cooperation that will become a catalyst for soft skills enhancement.

TL;DR: The definition and regulatory bodies governing functional food across different countries are reviewed, followed by an overview of the functional food growth potential in Malaysia and a discussion on factors that might influence the purchase of functional food.
Abstract: Food can do far more than filling humans’ stomach: they can promote and protect our health. Some food contains bioactive components that are beneficial to health and are able to reduce risks of chronic diseases. These foods are known as “functional foods”. The interest in functional foods has increased in developed economies as people look for safer way to improve general health and living. Not much is known about acceptance of functional foods among Malaysian consumers. The aim of this paper is to review the definition and regulatory bodies governing functional food across different countries. This will be followed by an overview of the functional food growth potential in Malaysia and a discussion on factors that might influence the purchase of functional food.

TL;DR: Results showed that Arabic interference was not the only source of errors, but that English was a source of many errors as well, and found that interlingual errors are the most commonly occurring types of article errors.
Abstract: This study aims at providing a comprehensive account of the types of errors produced by Saudi female EFL students in their use of articles, based on the Surface Structure Taxonomies (SST) of errors. Data were collected from written samples of 100 first-year female EFL students at the Department of English in the University of Ha’il. Students were given one-and-a-half hours to write on one of six different descriptive topics related to their life and culture. Analysis of errors in students’ written samples revealed that while students made a considerable number of errors in their use of articles according to SST, omission errors were the most frequent, while substitutions were the least frequent. Additionally, among all types of omission errors identified, the omission of the indefinite article ‘a’ was the most frequent. In sharp contrast, the omission of the indefinite article ‘an’ was the least frequent error. Not surprisingly, errors relating to the addition of the definite article ‘the’ were the most frequent, which correlates with the fact that the definite article is used more widely in the Arabic language than in English. In fact, the English article system is a complex aspect of English grammar. It is one of the most difficult areas of acquisition for even the most advanced learners who have perfectly learnt all other features of the language. This means that EFL instructors may tolerate these errors and look at article errors as more serious. Further, results showed that Arabic interference was not the only source of errors, but that English was a source of many errors as well. Findings showed that 57. % of the errors were interlingual ones, indicating the influence of the native language. Thus, interlingual errors are the most commonly occurring types. On the other hand, intralingual errors represented 42.56% of article errors. This result also indicates that L1 interference strongly influences the process of second language acquisition of the articles, having a negative effect on the learning process. Teachers and instructors should therefore point out more clearly the differences between L1 and L2 in the use of articles.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the relationship between consumers' awareness and knowledge to effective consumers' behaviors and found significant relationship between awareness and effective consumer behavior, while unawareness leads to ignorant and reduction of individual capacity in protecting and upholding their rights against sellers' expropriations.
Abstract: This article examines the relationship between consumers’ awareness and knowledge to effective consumers’ behaviors. This study employs survey technique to measure three variables comprises of consumer awareness, knowledge and behaviors. Measurement instruments have been developed in light of Malaysian context and all items attempt to capture basic requirement for food services and/or products in conjunction with Malaysian consumers’ rights. Correlation analysis was used to evaluate the proposed relationships, while differences across gender, location and education level had been examined through t-test independent group analysis. The analysis indicates significant relationship between awareness and effective consumer behavior. The result demonstrates that awareness is prior to effective consumers’ behaviors; while unawareness leads to ignorant and reduction of individual capacity in protecting and upholding their rights against sellers’ expropriations. Nevertheless, consumers’ awareness differs significantly between locations in which the urban dwellers showed lesser awareness compared to the less-urban areas.

TL;DR: This article examined the notions of (in)directness and politeness in the speech act of requests among Saudi Arabic native speakers as compared to American English native speakers and found that the level of directness differed cross-culturally.
Abstract: This article examines the notions of (in)directness and politeness in the speech act of requests among Saudi Arabic native speakers as compared to American English native speakers. To elicit data on the requestive strategies that the two groups employed, a randomly chosen group of 30 Saudi and American undergraduate students were given a discourse completion test that consisted of twelve written context-enriched situations. The results revealed that conventional indirectness was the most prevailing strategy employed by the American sample. On the other hand, the Saudi sample varied their request strategies depending on the social variables of power and distance. The results also showed that the level of directness differed cross-culturally. American students used direct requests when addressing their friends on the condition that the request was not weighty; however, directness was the most preferred strategy among Saudi students in intimate situations where directness is interpreted as an expression of affiliation, closeness and group-connectedness rather than impoliteness.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the relationship between board of directors and company's capital structure in an emerging market, Malaysia, and found that board size and presence of independent non-executive directors on the board have significant, negatively and positively correlation with debt to asset ratio respectively.
Abstract: Malaysia is one of the rapidly developing economies in South-East Asia which embraces the concept of good corporate governance due to the 1997-1998 Asian financial crises. This study investigates the relationship between board of directors and company’s capital structure in an emerging market, Malaysia. This research paper covers 75 non-financial leading Malaysian companies, which are employed as a price index, listed on Kuala Lumpur stock exchange (KLSE) from the year 2005 to 2008 fiscal years. A multiple regression analysis has been used to examine the linkage between board of director’s features and capital structure decisions of the listed companies. Measures of board of directors employed are size of the board, presence of non-executive directors on the board, presence of independent non-executive directors on the board and CEO/Chair duality. Results reveal that board size and presence of independent non-executive directors on the board have significant, negatively and positively correlation with debt to asset ratio respectively. However corporate capital structure decisions are not found significantly influenced by CEO/Chair duality and the presence of non-executive directors on the board. Consequently based on the results, board of director’s features such as board size and presence of independent non-executive directors on the board play an important role in determination of financial mix of the companies.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored the awareness, understanding, perception and participation of Malaysian youth with regards to environmental citizenship, which is a form of citizenship that prioritizes and emphasizes the importance of the environment and one that crosses the national territorial borders.
Abstract: Over the past years, there have been great concerns over the global environmental issues. Human activities have contributed towards climate changes that are affecting the world. The rise of temperature has been noticeable and this strengthens the arguments of the greenhouse effect. Among the environmental concerns include carbon dioxide emissions by transportation, deforestation, open burning, excessive waste, river pollution and etc. These issues have raised the global need for environmental citizenship. It is a form of citizenship that prioritizes and emphasizes the importance of the environment and one that crosses the national territorial borders. It stresses the need to have citizens who inhibit greater awareness of the environment and try to maintain and preserve the earth by participating in ‘green’ activities and saving the earth. This research aimed at exploring the awareness, understanding, perception and participation of Malaysian youth with regards to environmental citizenship. Six focus groups were conducted within Klang Valley with each group comprising of 5-6 people. The informants consisted of Malay, Chinese and Indian youths between the age of 18-25. The questions were focused on the general and technical understanding of environmental issues, the sources of information on the environment and the role that these individuals and the community have played as environmental citizens.

TL;DR: The functional ability, participation in physical activities and activities with formal support networks are statistically significant predictors of life satisfaction among the older people and these variables, when combined explain a statistically significant portion of the variance in their life satisfaction.
Abstract: This study determined whether the functional ability and participations in activities affect the life satisfaction of the older people. Data were gathered from the 780 older people through survey interview, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale and Life Satisfaction Index for the Third Age Scale. The functional ability, participation in physical activities and activities with formal support networks are statistically significant predictors of life satisfaction among the older people. These variables, when combined explain a statistically significant portion (23.7%) of the variance in their life satisfaction. The older people who have better health status enjoy their lives more than those who have poor health conditions. After reaching the age of sixty, the older people are still capable of working and be active participants in the labor sector. The results have theoretical implications on the activity theory of aging since high levels of participation in the activities mean high levels of life satisfaction.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the relationship of both agreeableness and conscientiousness (two factors of big five model of personality traits) with deviant behavior in workplace and found that personality traits predicted workplace deviant behaviour.
Abstract: In recent years, there has been an increase in the interest of workplace deviant behavior (WDB) among industrial and organizational psychologists. Many scholars believe that WDB decreases overall organizational productivity. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of both agreeableness and conscientiousness (two factors of big five model of personality traits) with deviant behavior. The study also looked at the role of two demographic factors (gender and age) on deviant behavior in workplace. Data were collected from 212 subjects who were working as civil servants in Malaysia using a set of questionnaire that measures the variables studied. The results showed that personality traits predicted workplace deviant behavior. There were negative relationships between agreeableness and conscientiousness with workplace deviance. Although the findings of the present study showed differences in WDB between subjects with different age levels, it was unable to find differences in WDB between subjects with different gender. Implications for future research are discussed.
