TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the effects of psychological factors on investor behavior regarding the Kuwait Stock Exchange (KSE) and found that psychological factors play a significant role in individual investors' decisions regarding KSE.
Abstract: This study investigates the effects of psychological factors on investor behaviour regarding the Kuwait Stock Exchange (KSE). These psychological factors are, namely: excessive optimism vs pessimism, herd behaviour and risk appetite. The data for this study obtained from KSE and a survey of a random sample of 398 individual investors. By using qualitative analysis and based on the theory of behavioural finance, the study findings show that herd behaviour, optimism and psychology risk have an impact on the individual investors’ decisions. However, we did not find any evidence of overconfidence behaviour’s effects on investors’ decisions. To our knowledge, KSE has been examined by several researchers without taking into consideration the effects of psychological factors on individual investor decisions. This study finds that psychological factors play a significant role in individual investors’ decisions regarding KSE. This study might contribute positively to the development of this field of research in (KSE).

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined socio-political violence in Cambodia between January 1990 and December 1992 (the baseline period) and the possible influence of group practice of the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program at Maharishi Vedic University (MVU) by 550 undergraduate students beginning in January 1993 through December 2008.
Abstract: The relationship between individual and group practice of the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program and reductions in social stress, tension, and violence has been the topic of systematic exploration since the 1970s in Canada, India, Israel, Lebanon, New Zealand, Norway, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, United Kingdom, and United States. Findings from these quantitative studies have been published in leading international conflict resolution and peace studies journals. However, research in Cambodia has to date only been of a descriptive and qualitative nature with a focus on economic and social variables not violence or crime. The purpose of the present study is therefore to examine socio-political violence in Cambodia between January 1990 and December 1992 (the baseline period) and the possible influence of group practice of the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program at Maharishi Vedic University (MVU) by 550 undergraduate students beginning in January 1993 through December 2008 (the impact-assessment period). This study uses an explanatory mixed methods design to examine socio-political violence using time series analysis of machine-coded news reports (quantitative data) and document analysis of national and international media reports, personal statements, and public documents (qualitative data). Results indicate that beginning in January 1993, when meditating students at MVU began their group practice, a marked downward shift occurred in the trends of socio-political violence and other forms of violent crime in Cambodia, contrary to predicted baseline trends and contrary to widespread community and media expectations. Such a conclusion can be drawn from both the quantitative and qualitative evidence when comparing baseline and impact-assessment periods, suggesting that the observed decline in socio-political violence during this time was associated with an increase in peace, order, and harmony—that is, a rise of social coherence—in the collective consciousness of Cambodia generated by the group of meditating students at MVU.

TL;DR: The data show that various socio-demographic characteristics are associated with the enrollment of HI, and that literate respondents and joint families are less likely to enroll than illiterate and nuclear families respectively.
Abstract: The enrollment in Health Insurance (HI) is considered as a sustainable way of financing for health and preparedness for catastrophic health care cost during receiving health services. Various socio-demographic factors are still unanswered regarding their influence. A study aiming to assess the factors associated with the enrollment of HI was conducted in 2018 in two districts of Nepal namely Kailali and Baglung. The study was cross-sectional covering 810 (405 enrolled and 405 not-enrolled) randomly selected households (HH). Socio-demographic variables were considered as independent variables and enrollment in HI as dependent variable. An interview schedule was used as a tool for data collection. Univariate, bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed to analyze the data. The data show that various socio-demographic characteristics are associated with the enrollment of HI. A significant statistical difference is seen between enrollment to HI and HH headship, age group of respondents, ability to feed the family, presence of chronic diseases in family, knowledge on HI, willingness to pay (WTP) for HI, having HI guidelines or books, participation in HI related training, interactions with neighbours, access to communication media: the radio/FM and TV, hoarding boards (HB), newspapers, posters/pamphlets/brochures; and access to health facilities. The results further show that female heads appear more likely to enroll (aOR = 1.47) in HI than the male. HH headship of the respondents also seem more likely to enroll. Higher age respondents are less likely to enroll. Interestingly, literate respondents and joint families are less likely to enroll than illiterate and nuclear families respectively. However, respondents having knowledge in HI seem more likely to enroll (aOR = 28.97, p1.673, p

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated empirically the dividend-growth nexus in the context of Nigerian economy in a multivariate VAR model spanning between the period 1970 and 2017, and found that the innovation in gross enrollment made much contribution to the variation in economic growth relative to innovation in economic support ratio, thus, lending credence to the theoretical view of the education-triggered dividend model which ascribes to education twofold roles of helping to lessen fertility and also enhancing productivity but invalidates the conventional dividend paradigm.
Abstract: In demography and population economics discourse, the macroeconomic implications of an upsurge in working age population, notably the labour force, on economic growth has been widely studied and the inherent beneficial impact has become known as demographic dividend. However, the exact mechanism linking the dividend to growth remains a perennial question. This motivates the current study to investigate empirically the dividend-growth nexus in the context of Nigerian economy in a multivariate VAR model spanning between the period 1970 and 2017. Specifically, the paper attempted to answer the question: Is the Nigerian Demographic Dividend an Education-triggered Dividend? Innovation Accounting Techniques was applied to assess the dynamic interactions among the variables. The empirical evidence obtained revealed that the innovation in gross enrollment made much contribution to the variation in economic growth relative to innovation in economic support ratio. The magnitude ranges between 20.09 and 27.54 percent. This result, thus, lend credence to the theoretical view of the education-triggered dividend model which ascribes to education twofold roles of helping to lessen fertility and also enhancing productivity but invalidates the conventional dividend paradigm.

TL;DR: In this paper, a conceptual framework based on Hofstede's dimensions of national culture and core processes of responsible innovation is proposed to make the Western-rooted RI approach more contextual and facilitate its applicability in practice, especially in other cultural settings.
Abstract: Responsible Innovation (RI) recently emerged as an approach that addresses issues related to major social and environmental risks and uncertainties in complex innovations. At this stage, more inquiry is still needed to make the Western-rooted RI approach more contextual and to facilitate its applicability in practice, especially in other cultural settings. To address this issue, we propose a conceptual framework based on Hofstede’s dimensions of national culture and core processes of RI. We argue that the cultural dimensions are likely to play distinct roles in influencing how these RI processes would be interpreted and operationalised in different societies with different cultures, illustrating this with some examples from Asian countries. Ultimately, the paper emphasises the importance of evolving a broader, more comprehensive and mature approach to RI that takes cultural aspects explicitly into account.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of political risk on FDI was investigated in the case of Lebanon over the period 2008-2018, and the findings provided evidence of significant causality between all political risk factors and FDI inflows.
Abstract: Foreign direct investment (FDI) is an important determinant of economic growth. A wealth of literature has tackled its determinants; however few investigated the effect of political risk on FDI. Consequently, this study examines 12 ICRG political risk indicators, after removing multicollinearity and grouping them into three categories, to test the nature of this relation in the case of Lebanon over the period 2008-2018. The findings provide evidence of significant causality between all political risk factors and FDI inflows. Other determinants like “Infrastructure”, “Inflation”, “Trade Openness” and “Wage Rates” have insignificant effects.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors conceptualize the social media channels in terms of their characteristics and discuss the correlation between social media choices and culture, concluding that social media has certain characteristics that interrelate with each other and culture has a moderation effect on the choices.
Abstract: This article is a pioneering theoretical work as an approach from the perspective of combination of social media characteristics and wisdom of crowds. The aim of this article is to conceptualize the social media channels in terms of their characteristics and to discuss the correlation between social media choices and culture. This paper contributes to social media marketing theory by developing a conceptual approach that explains and offers implications pertaining to the relationship between different social media channels in the age of social media. To do this, the relevant literature has been thoroughly reviewed, and exploratory research method has been used. The study also aims to visualize the effect of cultural differences as aligned with the study of Edward Hall (1967) and Gert Hoftstede (1984). Cultural factors exert a broad and deep influence on social media choices. Arab countries are categorized as high-context culture according to Hall's dimensions. The social media reports, Arab Social Media, conducted by Dubai School of Government of the years from 2013, 2013 and 2017 were analyzed. The limited availability of the literature done on the region has limited the scope and analysis of the research. The paper concludes that social media has certain characteristics that interrelate with each other and culture has a moderation effect on the choices.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed public opinion, litigations, as well as court rulings on surrogacy in China, and found that societal attitudes in China on surrogate adoption align with those of court rulings.
Abstract: Culturally, commercial surrogacy has come to be viewed and criticized as immoral. Thus, many prefer it to be outlawed in China. At the same time, “to carry on the bloodline of the family” and having more children are also culturally celebrated in Chinese society. The two cultural traditions, together with the implementation and gradual revocation of the one-child policy in the 21st century, have led to a dilemma modern Chinese parents are facing: more and more couples feel morally obligated to have more children after the revocation of the one-child policy but are too old to naturally reproduce. With the vagueness of regulations around commercial surrogacy in China, more couples have resorted to surrogacy in the past decade, which currently functions in a grey market. Within the unregulated market, both moral and legal concerns emerge. Through analysis of public opinion, litigations, as well as court rulings on surrogacy in China, this paper asks the following question: To what extent does the societal attitude in China on surrogacy align with that of litigations and court rulings on surrogacy in China? This paper hopes to provide insight into the Chinese surrogacy markets and responses from different actors within the process of surrogacy, leading to broader questions such as: How can litigations in China on surrogacy be improved? How can we ensure rights of all actors in a transaction concerning surrogacy? Should surrogacy be permissible at all? These are relevant questions relating to the structural violence prevalent in the seemingly peaceful modern China and have an impact on the direction of future feminist studies.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated whether rural migrant workers were particularly vulnerable in terms of psychosocial wellbeing after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, one of the major incidents marking the worst turmoil of the 2008 financial crisis.
Abstract: Background. Since 1980, China has been experiencing the largest migration in human history to urban areas. Rural migrant workers are exposed to disproportionate stress, a sense of marginality, language barriers and low social positions. Stress plays a significant role in the development of psychosocial challenges, including anxiety, hostility and depressive symptoms, as well as diagnosable conditions, including compulsive and post-traumatic stress disorders. This project questions whether rural migrant workers were particularly vulnerable in terms of psychosocial wellbeing after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, one of the major incidents marking the worst turmoil of the 2008 financial crisis. Methods. Data from the Rural Urban Migration in China (RUMiC) 2007-08 and 2008-09 datasets were used for analyses. General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) -12 scores, categorised as the presence of common mental disorders (CMDs) vs. the absence of CMDs, were chosen as the dependent variable. Socioeconomic status was measured as per hukou status, job nature and working hours, each treated as an independent variable. City, gender, age, ethnicity and educational level were taken into account as confounders. Cross-tabulations and binary logistic regression analyses were run. The software package STATA 14.2 was used for secondary data analysis. Results. The more educational qualifications rural migrant worker samples received, the more likely they were to be free from CMDs. However, tertiarily-educated rural migrant worker samples enjoyed similar levels of mental wellbeing as their counterparts who had completed elementary school or below. Additionally, there was no statistical evidence to suggest that rural migrant worker samples were more likely to experience CMDs based on their job nature (non-manual vs. manual vs. self-employed vs. family business) or working hours ( = 120 hours per week). Conclusions. The optimal rural migrant workers’ educational level, in terms of maximising their mental wellbeing, was between senior secondary school and post-secondary school level. However, socioeconomic factors, namely, job nature and working hours, were insignificant determinants of mental wellbeing of rural migrant workers. Moreover, there was no evidence suggesting rural migrant workers suffered from a distinct mental wellbeing between 2008 and 2009.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors pointed out that with the aid of diversity and complexity of religious sources, better environment friendly citizens may appear in the society, and that one of the most important factors that motivates people at ease is religion.
Abstract: The world's assets are lessening and nature is in retreat. In less than a century, human populace and its needs for space, materials, merchandise, and conveniences have enlarged more than four times. Some of the environment spoiling problems are to remember: the over-cut of woods, depleting of wetlands, spread of horticultural advancement and high rates of pesticide and compost use, the spread of wild nuisances, unplanned clearing of forest for household stock, urbanization of foreshores, and the contamination of streams and estuaries. All these natural harms are caused because of thoughtless human works. Knowing these, issues about environmental cleaning, protecting the environment, to prevent damage to the ecological balance and such issues have been being mentioned and emphasized too often in media outlets in the last two decades. In order to implement these highlighted issues in society, foundations and associations are formed. These organizations foster to set up various activities to intensify people’s attention to the subject and create environmental awareness among public. Herewith, so many dynamics can be utilized to motivate people to be well and responsible in life. Among the dynamics, one of the most important factors that motivates people at ease is religion. Benefiting from religious motivation or sources while changing people's habits or perceptions can be a good solution in shaping conscious citizens. Moreover, to make people more sensitive about these issues and more addicted to their responsibilities, religions’ effect is inevitable. In this article, the researcher points out that with the aid of diversity and complexity of religious sources, better environment friendly citizens may appear in the society.

Abstract: Nowadays, people are willing to purchase their own smartphone and they heavily rely on their smartphone. In this case, smartphones have become the daily necessity among Hong Kong people. Also, nowadays Hong Kong people always look for the new model of smartphones, the trend of changing smartphones is still very strong. The purpose of this research is to study the factors affecting the purchase intention of smartphones of post 90s in Hong Kong. After reviewing the literature, this study chose three variables to study the relationship between brand name, price and social influence and purchase intention. An online questionnaire was adopted to carry out a quantitative study of post 90s in Hong Kong. The content of the survey included demographic factors and questions based on each variable. The result of the survey shows that there are two hypotheses are support in the study. One is the relationship between brand name and purchase intention and the other is relationship between social influence and purchase intention whilst price is not a significant factor influencing purchase intention. Therefore, it is strongly believe that management of smartphone producers and traders need to pay more attention to brand name and social influence in enhancing the purchase intention among post 90s in Hong Kong.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the correlation between electronic banking services in Palestine and customer satisfaction and found a significant positive correlation between the electronic banking strategies and the customer satisfaction using these services, which will be guiding the banks in Palestine to build strategies focusing on electronic banking to achieve one of their top objectives by attracting and retaining their customers for the long-term.
Abstract: Digital banking could be a new era for banks in Palestine. Electronic banking services have become an essential part of the banking services in most of the banks in Palestine, along with the traditional banking represented by the physical branches. Recently, more banks in Palestine have shifted towards Electronic Banking services by utilizing the advancement in the Information and Telecommunication technology thereby enhancing the customer experience and satisfaction, and increasing the efficiency of the banking services, since electronic banking is available 24/7, with no restrictions on working hours. This study examines the correlation between electronic banking services in Palestine and customer satisfaction. The main question is: “What is the impact of the electronic banking strategies on customers’ satisfaction within the banking sector in Palestine?” The methodology used to tackle this question is based on two major components: a) survey design targeting 347 banks’ customers in 8 banks in Palestine, b) Direct interviews with the Top management of two major banks in Palestine (Arab Bank and Bank of Palestine) on the bank's future strategies towards Electronic banking. With the introduction of the Third generation of wireless internet (3G) service in Palestine, the internet has become readily available and accessible, at any time. Along with the availability of traditional wireless network in the bank itself, the banking systems in Palestine are moving quickly toward digitalization. This study finds several interesting findings, one of these findings is the significant positive correlation between electronic banking strategies and customer satisfaction using these services. Thus, the study null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. This finding will be guiding the banks in Palestine to build strategies focusing on electronic banking services to achieve one of their top objectives by attracting and retaining their customers for the long-term.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on the discourse analysis of social factors influencing the interest contention in business dispute settlement at the stage of litigation from the perspective of Discourse Information Theory (DIT).
Abstract: Interest contention which reflects the nature of business dispute settlement is one of the vital issues to explore in the studies of business dispute and it structures the whole process of business dispute settlement from mediation, negotiation to arbitration and litigation. Under the influence of various factors, litigants with differing interest orientations and interest demands could make good use of a number of information resources for the purpose of communicating, defending and fighting for the interests of their own. Contexts are a socially based mental model dynamically constructed by participants about “the for-them-relevant properties” of communicative situation (van Dijk, 2008). The social factors in the context influences the distribution of discourse information resources in the interest contention in business dispute settlement. In view of this, the present study focuses on the discourse analysis of social factors influencing the interest contention in business dispute settlement at the stage of litigation from the perspective of Discourse Information Theory (DIT) (Du, 2007, 2013, 2015). It can be found that any conflicting party’s lawyer could take advantage of both different social identities and social relationships to attack the counterparty’s loopholes or shortcomings and gain more interests for his own party in the interest contention in business dispute settlement.

TL;DR: In this article, a comparative analysis of the economic performance of crop cultivation by two approaches, mono-crop approaches including mono-coffee farms (MCFs) and mono-pepper farms (MPFs), inter-cropped approaches comprising intercropped coffee farms (ICF) and inter-pped pepper farms (IPFs).
Abstract: Dak Lak Province, Vietnam has been identified as the optimal growing area region of cash crops. However, in recent years, perennial crops have faced some challenges need to have a new approach to maintain production sustainability. This study primarily provides a comparative analysis of the economic performance of crop cultivation by two approaches, mono-crop approaches including mono-coffee farms (MCFs) and mono-pepper farms (MPFs); intercropped approaches comprising intercropped coffee farms (ICFs) and intercropped pepper farms (IPFs). Additionally, this paper identifies the main factors affecting the farmer’s adoption decision on different intercropped farm types. Based on an investigation of 120 selected farms, focus group discussions (FGDs) and participant assessments, from January to April 2019, the information about farming operations, costs and profits also were collected. The findings indicated that intercropped farms (include ICFs and IPFs) had a higher reduction of variable costs than mono-crop farms (MCFs and MPFs). Likewise, between two intercropped farm types, ICFs that wasted fewer input costs seem to be more appropriate for the poor and small saving households than that of IPFs. TL;DR: There is a need to intensify education for pregnant women, especially those who have had previous childbirth experience, and it is also crucial to target women from poor households, to increase their awareness, and promote institutional delivery.
Abstract: Delivery location may influence maternal morbidity and mortality, especially in developing countries such as Nepal. The aim of this study was to determine factors associated with place of delivery among pregnant women in Nepal in order to inform health policy makers attempting to improve mother and child health. Data from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, conducted in 2014, were retrospectively reviewed. In the survey, women aged 15-49 years were interviewed face-to-face using a structured questionnaire. Study subjects were women who had giving birth within the previous two years. A total of 2,086 women (48.9%) had non-institutional delivery (46.5% at home). Logistic regression models were used to identify significant factors influencing non-institutional delivery. Results showed that increasing educational level and wealth quintile index corresponded to a decreasing percentage of non-institutional delivery. More than half (55.5%) of women from rural areas had a non-institutional delivery. Multiparous women (57.2%) and those having less than 4 antenatal care visits (66.8%) had relatively higher rates of non-institutional delivery. In conclusion, there is a need to intensify education for pregnant women, especially those who have had previous childbirth experience. It is also crucial to target women from poor households, to increase their awareness, and promote institutional delivery.
