TL;DR: In this article, the authors used account books of poor relief institutions in which collection revenues have been specified per type of donated coin, and argued that in the urban areas of the Dutch Republic money was in fact widely available.
Abstract: Research on the level of monetization of early modern societies has often emphasized the lack of a coherent coin policy, and defective coin circulation. In this article, using a thus far unexplored source, namely account books of poor relief institutions in which collection revenues have been specified per type of donated coin, it is argued that in the urban areas of the Dutch Republic money was in fact widely available. Not only were, in principle, all households, from rich to poor, expected to donate to charitable causes, the account books suggest that indeed a majority of the population contributed to collections on a frequent basis. This indicates that the Dutch Republic was a highlymonetized society, in which also poorer households had no problem to find coins.

TL;DR: Bloembergen and Eickhoff as mentioned in this paper argue that the history of the Rijksmuseum's collections and recent historyiography on colonialism have been subordinated to art-historical connoisseurship, and to the idea that objects can evoke an understanding of the past in themselves.
Abstract: A Small Country that takes the World by Storm: The New Rijksmuseum and the Dutch Colonial Past In this essay Marieke Bloembergen and Martijn Eickhoff analyse the ways ‘history’ and ‘art’ have been integrated in the new Rijksmuseum’s colonial sections. They argue that – in the selection and presentation of objects – the history of the Museum’s collections and recent historiography on colonialism have been subordinated to art-historical connoisseurship, and to the idea that objects can evoke an understanding of the past in themselves. Thus the colonial sections follow predominantly the frameworks and storylines from the nineteenth century. This, while the same collection could have shown how the Netherlands – today, and in colonial times – is part of a complex world that might generate the need for univocal ‘national’ clarities, but that in the end only gains from a combination of curiosity, self-reflection and space for others.

TL;DR: Prak and Van Zanden's book Nederland en het poldermodel as mentioned in this paper offers a succinct and vigorous account of a millennium of Dutch political economy by organizing its development around the concept of the polder model.
Abstract: Prak and Van Zanden’s book Nederland en het poldermodel offers a succinct and vigorous account of a millennium of Dutch political economy by organising its development around the concept of the ‘polder model’. This assessment finds much to admire in the book, but subjects the polder model concept to critical questioning, among which: Does the polder model foster economic growth or does it simply require a rich society in order to function? Is the polder model specifically Dutch or broadly European? Is its modern form truly a linear descendant of the corporate bodies of earlier times? Is it really a ‘nursery of democracy’ or simply a ‘hothouse of rent seeking’? As an historical concept the polder model is a moreelusive term than appears at first sight.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on the territory of the Netherlands, fully aware that this was not a (politically or economically) coherent territory before the sixteenth century, but any other choice would have been equally arbitrary.
Abstract: In response to the contributions by Davids-’t Hart, De Vries, and De Munck we emphasise that our book Nederland en het poldermodel [The Netherlands and the Polder Model] has been written for a general audience and therefore does not provide a detailed theoretical framework, nor a large number of graphs and tables. We have focused on the territory of the Netherlands, fully aware that this was not a (politically or economically) coherent territory before the sixteenth century, but any other choice would have been equally arbitrary. In the Middle Ages the region developed much like other, neighbouring parts of Western Europe, but whereas elsewhere the rise of centralised states and absolutist monarchs ended the development path based on bottom-up institutions, the successful Dutch Revolt and the formation of the decentralised Dutch Republic ensured much more continuity. We share the assessment of our critics that the transformation from this institutional structure via the mid-nineteenth century phase of ‘liberalisation’ into the new corporatism of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries is still incompletely understood.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine perceptions and performances of emotions in Devotio Moderna biographies, focusing on the seminal emotions of fear and love, and find that men in contrast to women, sisters and brothers of the Common Life as opposed to regular canons and canonesses, developed different emotional styles.
Abstract: From the nineteenth century the adherents of the Devotio Moderna were regarded as the archetypical Dutch, mainly because of the measured way in which they handled their emotions. This article challenges this notion by a careful study of the Devotio Moderna as an emotional community, in which different emotional styles were developed. It examines perceptions and performances of emotions in Devotio Moderna biographies, focusing on the seminal emotions of fear and love. Biographies provide insight into the emotional styles of different groups in Devotio Moderna, men in contrast to women, sisters and brothers of the Common Life as opposed to regular canons and canonesses.

TL;DR: The Nederland en het poldermodel [The Netherlands and the Polder Model] by Utrecht History Professors Maarten Prak and Jan Luiten van Zanden as discussed by the authors has achieved full academic respectability.
Abstract: With the new textbook Nederland en het poldermodel [The Netherlands and the Polder Model] by Utrecht History Professors Maarten Prak and Jan Luiten van Zanden the polder model may be said to have achieved full academic respectability. Asked to compress 1,000 years of Dutch economic and social history into a single 300-page volume targeted at a popular audience, the authors chose to do so by analysing the country’s ups-anddowns entirely in terms of its peculiar type of organisation, the polder model’s presumed strengths and weaknesses. The BMGN - Low Countries Historical Review editors asked four experts in the social and economic history of the Low Countries, Karel Davids and Marjolein ’t Hart (vu Amsterdam/Huygens ing), Jan de Vries (Berkeley), and Bert De Munck (University of Antwerp) to review it, paying particular attention to what the conceptual approach adds to our understanding of the country’s marked economic fluctuations during the past millennium.

TL;DR: This paper introduced the concept of emotional identity to reflect upon the underlying dynamic process in which both insiders and outsiders use (the handling of) emotions, or the lack thereof, to characterise a group of persons.
Abstract: Throughout history emotions and emotional styles have functioned as social markers to make a distinction between groups in societies. This essay introduces the concept of ‘emotional identity’ to reflect upon the underlying dynamic process in which both insiders and outsiders use (the handling of) emotions, or the lack thereof, to characterise a group of persons. Taking the allegedly phlegmatic temperament of the Dutch as an example, it explains how such identities come into being and are sustained, but also contested, reappraised and altered over time. It discusses the non-exclusive and inherently paradoxical nature of emotional group identities as well as some of the key mechanisms and patterns of adjustment that account for the long life of the stereotypes involved. While the essay covers a time span of two millennia, it focuses mainly on the early modern era when classical climate zone theories merged with new modes of national thinking and even allowed for the smooth introduction of an entirely new element into the stolid character of the Dutch, that is, the national passion for profit.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the phenomenon of political apologies for collective historical injustice against the background of the much more common and seemingly trivial political apologies in a parliamentary democracy, focusing on the bicameral federal parliament of Belgium from 1990 to 2013.
Abstract: Political Apologies in Belgium: Some Reflections on a Moral and Political Economy This article discusses the phenomenon of apologies for collective historical injustice against the background of the much more common and seemingly trivial political apologies in a parliamentary democracy. Berber Bevernage focuses on the bicameral federal parliament of Belgium from 1990 to 2013. Firstly, Bevernage discusses a series of grave international issues, followed by a series of smaller ‘incidents’ such as those that often occur in international politics. Secondly, he discusses a series of examples taken from domestic politics – the grave, the serious and the trivial. This approach affords a good insight into the great variety of strategies and motives to which excuse politics can be related. Despite the aspect of recognising guilt, the expression of apologies is politically attractive because it can yield political capital and because it can produce an effect of closure. Yet, the expression and demanding of apologies also comes with certain political risks.

TL;DR: Rembrandt from his earliest works promoted the image of being the master of the lijdingen des gemoeds as discussed by the authors and avoided any movement, realising that the depiction of violent motion undermines the persuasiveness of the still image; he forces the viewer to imagine the inner conflicts in the minds of the protagonists who recognise their fate.
Abstract: The passions had to be rendered through the movements of the human figure (Van Mander); however it was an Italian cliche that Netherlandish artists were not able to depict figures properly. This article demonstrates how Rembrandt from his earliest works promoted the image of being the master of the lijdingen des gemoeds. Throughout his career Rembrandt aspired to surpass the artists of antiquity and the Italians through the portrayal of the passions to arouse the strongest possible empathy in the viewer, as Huygens immediately recognised. It is argued that concepts grafted onto classical rhetoric, such as oogenblikkige beweging (a term of his pupil Van Hoogstraten; a violent movement due to a sudden reversal of emotion that involves the viewer forcefully) were paramount in his earlier period, and in which one finds parallels with the Senecan-Scaligerian tragedies popular at that time. In contrast, in his later works Rembrandt avoided any movement, realising that the depiction of violent motion undermines the persuasiveness of the still image; he forces the viewer to imagine the inner conflicts in the minds of the protagonists who recognise their fate. To engage the viewer powerfully through a radical ‘from life’ ideology (situating himself in a northern tradition) was for Rembrandt a central concern in his continuous competition with the greatest exponents of his art (Titian, Rubens).

TL;DR: In this article, a detailed account of what happened among a group of pious men and women during a single week in 1757 enables us to reveal the interplay of Biblical examples, theological notions, use of language, social interactions and intensive communication in an outburst of spiritual and bodily emotions in a private community within the public order of the confessional state.
Abstract: The new history of emotions and the modern history of religion share the important question of the interconnection of mind and body in building and experiencing world views. This article offers a micro-analysis of the complex pattern of cognitions, feelings and practices in a specific context of Protestant culture in the Dutch town of Willemstad in the middle of the eighteenth century. A detailed account of what happened among a group of pious men and women during a single week in 1757 enables us to reveal the interplay of Biblical examples, theological notions, use of language, social interactions and intensive communication in an outburst of spiritual and bodily emotions in a private community within the public order of the confessional state. The case is placed against the background of religious ‘regime change’ that allowed people to express their individual and inner faith in and outside the official church or civil organisations.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an alternative account, whereby the past and contemporary struggles against the effects of trans-Atlantic slavery are not connected to the idea of having a cultural trauma, instead they are interpreted as an expression of the permanent internal and external revolutions of subjugated peoples to create a more just society and a fairer world.
Abstract: Reparation as a Present Day Expression of Permanent Revolution: A Point of View Increasingly Afro-Caribbean intellectuals in the Netherlands are connecting the discourse of having suffered a cultural trauma to the social fact of the gruesome realities of trans-Atlantic slavery and their struggle for reparation. Their argument is that the effects of the trans-Atlantic slave-trade have been such that on a cognitive and affective level their community has been severely handicapped. This aggravates the socio-economic discrimination and structural racism they face. To repair their psycho-social fabric, white Dutch have to express regret, the state has to offer official apologies and the offspring of those enslaved have to be financially compensated. The essay presents an alternative account, whereby the past and contemporary struggles against the effects of trans-Atlantic slavery are not connected to the idea of having a cultural trauma. Instead they are interpreted as an expression of the permanent internal and external revolutions of subjugated peoples to create a more just society and a fairer world.

TL;DR: In this article, a review of the book Nederland en het poldermodel [The Netherlands and the Polder Model], the idea that the polder model dates from the medieval principalities in the Low Countries is qualified.
Abstract: In this review of the book Nederland en het poldermodel [The Netherlands and the Polder Model], the idea that the ‘polder model’ dates from the medieval principalities in the Low Countries is qualified. It is argued that the coupling of the plea for continuity and the focus on one area causes problems. First, the exact differences between the Netherlands and other regions with a strong civil society and tradition of negotiation and power sharing appear hard to pinpoint. The endeavours to do so are often artificial and ignore broader developments of which Dutch history is a part. Secondly, the continuity thesis is not made credible (especially with respect with the transition to the nineteenth century) and injustice is done to the contingency and unpredictability of historical developments. The result is a teleological narrative and a missed opportunity for a critical reflection on nationalistic ideas.

TL;DR: Hoorens argues that Weyer wrote De praestigiis daemonum not only to defend the witches but also and, perhaps even more, as an instrument to criticise the Catholic Church as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Johann Weyer (1515/1516-1588)’s book De praestigiis daemonum, et incantationibus ac veneficiis (On devilish delusions and on enchantments and poisonings), first published in Basel in 1563, counts as a systematic attack on witch theories and witch trials. Vera Hoorens argues that Weyer wrote it not only to defend the witches but also and, perhaps even more, as an instrument to criticise the Catholic Church. This reinterpretation solves the problems that are associated with the traditional interpretation of De praestigiis daemonum, including the variety of its contents, Weyer’s seemingly enigmatic source use, and his having written the book before and not during the increase in witch trials. The article answers a number of questions that are raised by the reinterpretation, including those surrounding Weyer’s religious persuasion, why contemporaries and historians almost unanimously viewed De praestigiis daemonum as a treatise against witch trials, and the extent to which he truly cared about the witches. Waarom schreef Jan Wier De praestigiis daemonum?

Abstract: Plaatsen van beschaafd vertier [Places of civilised amusement] by Jan Hein Furnee, which appeared as a PhD thesis in 2007 and was adapted and extended into a book in 2012, is regarded by historians of the Low Countries as an impressive tour de force. In a stimulating manner Furnee demonstrates with this profound urban history that for the elite of The Hague leisure activities played an important role in acquiring status and maintaining their position. His study is based on extensive and systematic research into a great variety of sources, from census registers, membership lists of clubs and societies to address books. This gives the reader an extraordinarily detailed picture of the changing social relations in the upper echelons of society in The Hague in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The sophisticated use of both qualitative and quantitative methods can serve as a model for other historians in the field of urban history. In a lively fashion Furnee shows that the inhabitants of The Hague grasped at all kinds of pastimes in order to distinguish themselves from others, and when possible to increase their own status through their participation in elegant societies, theatre visits or supporting the proposed zoo: but the book also makes statements about status and class, the history of gender and of politics at the end of the nineteenth century.
