TL;DR: In this paper, an inventory of the herpetofauna of Salgado river basin, state of Ceara, Brazil, is presented, which includes 55 species, being 23 amphibians and 34 reptiles.
ABSTRACT: (Herpethological fauna of Rio Salgado basin, Ceara state, northeasterrn Brazil) The present study consists on an inventory of theherpetofauna of Salgado river basin, state of Ceara. Data were obtainedthrough time-constrained searches performed in five municipalities in Salgadoriver basin. Field trips consisted on 4 days during dry seasons and 5 daysduring the rainy seasons from September 2013 to May 2014, We find 55species, being 23 amphibians and 34 reptiles. The amphibians and reptiles diversity was homogeneous among the sampled municipalities and thesimilarity in amphibians was higher in geographical closest localities, whilethis relationship was not found in reptiles. The herpetofauna of Salgado riverbasin, can be considered as representative, given 30% of the cataloged speciesfor the State of Ceara were sampled. Our work may help in the comprehensionof the amphibians and reptiles distribution alongside Caatinga region and mayalso fill gaps in the sampled region. The knowledge on the fauna compositionregarding a given region is one of the essential requirements for preservingthe local biodiversity.
