Abstract: The antibiotic kanamycin was degraded with methanolic hydrogen chloride and was determined to be composed of three compounds: deoxystreptamine, 6-amino-6-deoxy-D-glucopyranose and 3-amino-3-deoxy-D-glucopyranose. From the chemical and physical data on the antibiotic and its fragments, kanamycin was shown to be O-α-6-amino-6-deoxy-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4 or 6)-O-[α-3-amino-3-deoxy-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→6 or 4)]-1, 3-diamino-1, 2, 3-trideoxy-myo-inositol.

Abstract: 本邦産とうがらし果実より単離した辛味成分Iは融点,元素組成,パラジウムを触媒とする水素吸収量,二臭化物の生成,紫外部及び赤外線吸収スペクトル並びに塩酸分解産物の検索等より, N-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzy1)-8-methylnon-traps-6-enamideであることを推定した. 同じくIIの融点,元素組成,展開剤を異にする数種のペーパークロマトグラフィに於けるRF及び赤外線吸収スペクトル等はIの水素添加物のそれらと一致し,又塩酸分解産物の検索等より, IIはIの飽和体即ち, N-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzy1)-8-methylnonanamideであることを推定した.

Abstract: Islanditoxin is a novel peptide consisted of five amino acids, three of which have been known as normal components of proteins and the remaining two, d-β-phenyl-β-aminopropionic acid and l-dichloroproline have not been encountered previously in nature. The structure of islanditoxin is shown to be a cyclic polypeptide, represented by formula (VIII).

Abstract: The properties of UDPG → fructose transglucosylase, partially purified from immature soybeans or broad beans, were investigated. Magnesium ions had a stimulating effect on this enzyme. Evidence was presented to show that UDPG, the glucosyl group donor for sucrose synthesis, was regenerated from UDP and G-1-P in the presence of ATP.

Abstract: Critical examinations were made on the conditions for preparing the sugar solutions to be analyzed by ion-exchange chromatography of sugar-borate complexes by the method of Khym and Zill. A procedure was proposed which gave the best recovery of sugars with minimum hydrolysis of sucrose. By means of this procedure, sugar solutions were prepared from potato tubers which had been stored at a high (30°C) or low temperature (6°C). Results of the chromatographic separation and determination of component sugars showed that main sugars present in potato tubers were sucrose, glucose, and fructose. Maltose and pentoses could not be detected. The contents of sucrose, glucose, and especially, fructose were far greater in potatoes stored at a low temperature than in those stored at a high temperature.

Abstract: The isolation of a new glycoside, named here as neocycasin A, with use of carbon chromato-graphy, is described. It is one of u series of aliphatic azoxy glycosides, found in the seeds of Japa-nese cycad together with cycasin which is β-glucosyloxyazoxymethane as reported previously. The glycoside monohydrate gives m. p. 162°_??_163° (decomp.), [α]_??_-35.1°; its heptaacetylate, m. p. 142°_??_143°, [α]_??_-55.5°, from which octaacetyl-β-laminaribiose is isolated. On the basis of examination of the products obtained from partial or complete hydrolysis, and spectroscopic measurements, neocy-casin A is concluded to be β-laminaribiosyloxyazoxymethane, i.e. 3-0-β-D-glucopyranosylcycasin.

Abstract: Esperin is an acidic antibiotic with a molecular formula of C39H67N5O11 and, on hydrolysis with acid, it afforded l-aspartic acid, l-glutamic acid, l-valine, l-leucine, d-leucine and 2-tridecenoic acid. By treatment with alkali, esperin was transformed to esperinic acid, C39H69N5O12, which was shown to be β-hydroxytridecanoyl-glutamyl-aspartyl-valyl-leucyl-leucine. From chemical and physical studies, esperin was proved to be the lactone of esperinic acid, represented by the formula III.

Abstract: Concerning the heat treatment of defatted soybean flour, the fitness of water dispersibility of protein as a criterion of the degree of denaturation has been investigated. Denaturation was measured by the change of susceptibility of the protein in water extract of the flour to protease action of Aspergillus sojae before and after heat treatment. It was found that the decrease of water dispersibility did not always run paralell with denaturation. The dispersibility method was applicable only to flours autoclaved for a definite period which varied according to temperature and the water content of the flour treated.Discussion is made about the fitness of measuring the degree of denaturation by protease action.

Abstract: イオン交換樹脂クロマトグラフィおよびペーパークロマトグラフィを用いて,米の発芽各期における3種の器官(胚乳,芽,根)に含まれる糖を分離定量した (1)未発芽の胚および胚乳では何れもシュクロースが主要な糖で,その他少量のラフィノース,グルコース,フラクトースを含んでいる. (2)発芽後の芽と根においてはラフィノースが消失し,シュクロース,グルコース,フラクトースが増量するが,どの時期をとってもその含有比率はほぼ一定である. (3)発芽後の胚乳においてはグルコースが顕著に増し, 8日目で最大となる.マルトースとシュクロースも同様な変化をするが,シュクロースの含有量は胚乳中の全糖量よりすれば,それ程多いものではない.また発芽後期において構造未決定の少糖類の出現が認められた. (4)予め胚乳より分離した胚を単一の糖で培養し,その中に含む糖を分析した結果,培養に用いた糖の種類に関係なく,通常の発芽をした胚と同様な糖をほぼ同じような割合いで含むことを認めた.

Abstract: In order to establish fundamental knowledge on the combustion mechanism of tobacco, the effects of smoking procedures on both combustion temperature of cigarettes and the amount of nicotine transferred into cigarette smoke were investigated. The combustion temperatures measured with fine thermocouples specially devised, and an excellent responsive autorecording potentiometer, were 794~827°C, irrespective of smoking procedures. The free burning temperature obtained was 746°C.When the cigarette was smoked up to a definite length (45 mm) from the lighted end, the amount of nicotine in cigarette smoke increased with increment in puff velocity, showing almost a linear curve.

Abstract: 生〓系酒母でLactobacillus sake, Leuconostoc mesenteroidesの二種が卓越的に増殖する理由に就いて実験を行った. (1) L. sakeは生育に或種のペプタイドを必要とし,これが麹汁より清酒中に多量存在するので,生育因子の酒母中での消長を検討し,これがAsp. oryzaeの酸性プロテアーゼ作用に由来することを知った. (2)純粋に作つた米麹に殺菌水を加え, L. sake, Leuc. mesenteroidesの培養をなし, L. sakeがLeuc. mesenteroidesに従属して生育するのでなく,単独でも充分生育することが判った. (3)これらの両種は他の乳酸菌に比べ低温(4°)でも生育可能であることを知ったが,生〓配系酒母に於てこれら両種が優越する理由は酒母育成が低温度で行われるために外ならぬとの結論に達した. (4) L. batatas, Pediococcus, Streptococcusに属する菌株が時々酒母中に検出されるのも,これらの菌がL. sake, Leuc. mesenteroidesには劣るが,比較的低温でも生育できるためであろう.

Abstract: Although acylase activities in animal tissues, molds, bacteria and yeast have been clarified, nothing has been reported on the acylase activity in plants. Therefore, as a part of a series of studies intending to elucidate the biological significance of the presence of acylase activity, activity in plants was investigated.As a result, the occurrence of acylase activity in plants such as vegetables, potatoes, pulses, cereals and fruits, has been confirmed for the first time. Besides the above higher plants a relatively higher acylase activity was also found in mushroom.

Abstract: Esters and methyl derivatives of a new pigment pyoluteorin, produced by a strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa have been synthesized, and catalytic hydrogenation of the derivatives was carried out to give the corresponding dechloro compounds. It has become clear that pyoluteorin is composed of an unsaturated nucleus and has two phenolic hydroxyls, one amino and the other a cross-conjugated carbonyl group.

Abstract: 前報(1)の4つのtypeを代表する糸状菌各1株宛について, pH作用曲線と阻害剤(Na-laurylsulfonate, EDTA及びpotato inhibitor)よりするプロテアーゼ組成の解析を試みた結果は次の如くである. (1) Pen. chrysogenum (type I)のプロテアーゼ系は酸性プロテアーゼ,微酸性プロテアーゼ並びにアルカリ性プロテアーゼを主要酵素とし,中性プロテアーゼは存在するとしても微量である. (2) Rhiz. javanicus (type II)のプロテアーゼ系はその大部分を酸性プロテアーゼが占めるが,尚その他に微酸性プロテアーゼが存在し,又極く微弱なアルカリ性プロテアーゼの活性も認められる. (3) Pen. luteum (type III)のプロテアーゼ系は,ほぼ相匹敵する活性の2種の酵素,即ち酸性プロテアーゼと微酸性プロテアーゼとを以て構成される. (4) Hormodendrum (type IV)は殆んど中性プロテアーゼのみより成る単一酵素系を有する点で他菌株とは異った特異性を有する. (5) 以上記載のプロテアーゼの中,微酸性プロテアーゼ(Semi-acid protease)は本実験の結果始めてその存在が明らかにせられたものである.

Abstract: Cell suspensions of Aerobacter aerogenes formed a remarkable amount of phenolsulphatase and dissimilate tyramine, provided a suitable primer was present with tyramine. As a primer, many carbon sources, especially, a mixture of amino acids could be considered useful. Several compounds such as glucose strongly inhibited not only the utilization of tyramine but also the phenolsulphatase synthesis of the cell suspensions containing tyramine and casein acid-hydrolyzate, while other compounds such as xylose either ineffective or only a little effective to both of the reactions. Therefore, the possibility that there might be a functional relationship between the ultilization of tyramine and the phenolsulphatase synthesis of Aerobacter aerogenes was considered.

It was shown that gibberellin A3 (gibberellic acid) has one more double bond at certain position of the gibberellin A1 structure. Several experiments supporting the partial structure of gibberellin A3 as (I) are reported. The position of the double bond in ring A of gibberellin A3 was assigned and the final structure of gibberellin A3 is reported.

Abstract: The extracellular proteinase of Ps. myxogenes sp. was found to be produced by cell suspension in a phosphate buffer of pH. 7.0 containing a carbon source and calcium ion under aerobic conditions.Various factors having affect on the proteinase production were studied, and calcium was found to be essential in its production. However, in cells prepared from a synthetic medium without calcium, the enzyme producing ability was possessed similarly as in those from the medium containing calcium, and the production was not altered by amino acid analogues. Thus, it might be assumed that calcium is necessary in the later stages, from the more complex precursor state than the amino acid-stage, in the biosynthetic reaction of proteinase. In the presence of available calcium, the balance between the concentrations of the carbon source and cells was important in production, and by maintaining the balance of both factors the enzymatic activity produced was almost parallel to the cdl concentrations.
