TL;DR: In this article, the authors discutir os impactos do produtivismo na pos-graduacao stricto sensu e avaliar o quanto o produtivaso ameaca a solidariedade academica that o torna possivel.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine whether the spiritually-based organization (SBO) can be regarded as an imperative for the third millennium and conclude that the material paradigm is not suited to deal with germane problems that shape our today's world, and suggest that the concept of SBO embraces positive changes and may be potentially conducive to improving people lives and the planet's health and equilibrium.
Abstract: This paper examines whether the spiritually-based organization (SBO) can be regarded as an imperative for the third millennium. As a result, it draws on the literature review of organizational spirituality, psychology of religion, positive psychology, and spirituality leadership theory in order to support its conclusions, as well as it offers some research propositions. Overall, the evidence gathered throughout this paper suggests that the spiritual paradigm starts to play a key role alongside with the concept of SBOs. Rather, it concludes that these topics can be regarded as authentic imperatives for this millennium. Nonetheless, it argues that is likely to take some time until the spirituality topic may mold, so to speak, organizations' character regarding that spiritual theme is starting to become a noteworthy topic. Furthermore, it argues that the logic that has prevailed on business enterprises has been largely economic, except some honorable initiatives. The findings also indicate that the material paradigm is not suited to deal with germane problems that shape our today's world. Finally, it suggests that the concept of SBO embraces positive changes and, as such, it may be potentially conducive to improving people lives and the planet's health and equilibrium.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the ways in which the management society develops a representation of the world and the human being in their minds, so that the only apparent way of self-realization consists of the logic of productivity and its psychical and social relations, making the companies a reference for human development.
Abstract: The objective of this article is to examine the ways in which the management society develops a representation of the world and the human being in their minds, so that the only apparent way of self-realization consists of the logic of productivity and its psychical and social relations, making the companies a reference for human development. Today there is a need of a self-malleable being, always open to new experiences; these are appropriated conditions for a short term job: flexible institutions and the new employment conditions. Employability is a macro-device of micro-political control in the production of subjectivities (ROHM, 2003). Sennett (2000) says that the meaning of life and death does not count. And that is why you should open up to human bonds and soul satisfaction, and not only to capitalism. To support this article, we seek the constructive path of the concept of work to achieve the current management in post-modernity. Thus it is expected to broaden the understanding of this phenomenon and enable the production of more effective methods and humanizing practice of managing people in organizations. A bibliographic research will be adopted through reviewing the literature of social sciences and critical theory applied to the analysis of the current management. According to Faria (2007), Critical Theory aims to develop formulations that penetrate the shape and substance, seeking to question the apparent reality and embrace the reality hidden in organizational structures.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the field of studies of the substantive rationality in the organizations, improved by the publishing of the research conducted by Serva (1997a; 1997b) that operationalized the proposals of Guerreiro Ramos (1981) by creating a framework of analysis that allowed him to empirically verify the existence of substantive rationality.
Abstract: This article aims to present the field of studies of the substantive rationality in the organizations, improved by the publishing of the research conducted by Serva (1997a; 1997b) that operationalized the proposals of Guerreiro Ramos (1981) by creating a framework of analysis that allowed him to empirically verify the existence of substantive rationality in management practices. Through the bibliographic review of thirty eight scientific studies, we demonstrated the stage of expansion in which the researches of rationality in organizations are at the present, evidencing the development of this field of research in Brazil. The studies were classified into first and second generation, and were fully investigated. The analysis of these results allowed us to validate the contribution of the model to the field of organizational studies, reinforcing this line of research field and presenting new possibilities of research from the thought of Guerreiro Ramos.

TL;DR: In this paper, a bibliographic study on the meaning of organization through a constructionist approach is conducted, whose main aim is analyzing the differences between the realist and constructionist debates about organizational ontology.
Abstract: This article aims to discuss the meaning of organization through a constructionist approach. To do this, we conducted a bibliographic study on the theme, whose main aim is analyzing the differences between the realist and constructionist debates about organizational ontology. It is observed that the concept of organization becomes much broader in constructionist approaches, not limited to studying themes related only to companies, work, or industries. In this sense, to discuss the main constructionist aspects related to the concept of organization, the study on the body is regarded as one of the themes belonging to organizational studies, correlating this theme to organizing processes, which are constituted by power relations that permeate the whole social body, i.e. they occur beyond the boundaries of a company. Thus, the object of analysis of organizational studies becomes organizing, instead of organizations. To understand how these organizing processes occur, there is a need to consider that objects, senses, meanings, "realities" and "truths" are socially constructed and they do not exist a priori or pre-discursively.

TL;DR: In this article, a literature review on organizational learning points out five main challenges faced by researchers from this field, and they deserve a special attention at the time of planning research projects in this area.
Abstract: This literature review on organizational learning points out five main challenges faced by researchers from this field. The challenges identified had a theoretical, conceptual, and methodological nature and they deserve a special attention at the time of planning research projects in this area. The first finding of the bibliographical survey is that there is not a theory of organizational learning and, therefore, researchers face the challenge of building theory related to this complex and multifaceted phenomenon. In turn, the second challenge refers to multilevel analysis of a process that takes place at the individual level and goes beyond the group, the organization, and other organizations, requiring a suitable analytical model. The theme has been studied by several disciplines from different perspectives, representing the third research finding and the challenge of building interdisciplinary bridges to develop a comprehensive and useful theory in various fields of science. This challenge becomes even more complex given the verification of the multiplicity of research concepts and constructs directly related to the same processes of generating and operating knowledge for organizational adaptation and performance. Finally, the fifth challenge refers to research methodologies on organizational learning, with barely explored possibilities and hegemony of instruments of individual perception.

TL;DR: The decolonial perspective is a theoretical construction by Latin American authors who deem themselves as heirs of the long-standing tradition of critical social thought in the region, where the dependency theory is situated.
Abstract: This article aims to (re)visit the concept of dependency as a category of investigation of (and from) Latin America, by means of a decolonial critical historical perspective, in order to increase space for debates on organization studies and promote alternatives to the neoliberal order. This essay will focus on dependency studies conducted by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) during the 1950s and early 1960s. The decolonial perspective is a theoretical construction by Latin American authors who deem themselves as heirs of the long-standing tradition of critical social thought in the region, where the dependency theory is situated. The proposals of dependency authors challenged the main orthodox theories from the North produced at that time. Through the concept of center-periphery, the denunciation of asymmetries in the relations between these regions, and the recognition of interdependency between development and underdevelopment, the concept of dependency was (re)elaborated along the 1950s and 1960s by many Latin American authors as a category of investigation of the reality of (and from) the region. These investigations aimed not only to formulate theoretical constructions, but also to transform reality by creating various organizations and institutions that might serve the purpose of overcoming underdevelopment. Denunciating the historicity of the underdevelopment situation has unveiled the neutrality nature of the economism of theories produced in the North and promoted a theoretical encounter between economics and politics that has much to contribute to the field of organization studies.

TL;DR: A Teoria Critica busca desenvolver articulacoes that penetrem a forma e substância, visando questionar a realidade aparente e abarcar arealidade encoberta nas estruturas organizacais as mentioned in this paper.

TL;DR: In this paper, a focus group was conducted, having an exploratory nature, in order to understand how participants see the variables under study, and it relied on a group made up of 7 people from various areas: 2 managers and 5 civil servants at lower levels.
Abstract: The assumption "happy, productive worker" claims that happy employees, whose needs are met at their workplaces, show a better performance than unhappy employees. This is a consolidated statement for the business society, but there are very few empirical references. Therefore, this study aims to examine workers' perception in relation to the assumption "happy, productive worker". A focus group was conducted, having an exploratory nature, in order to understand how participants see the variables under study. The focus group was conducted in an organization of the Judiciary that belongs to the federal government and it relied on a group made up of 7 people from various areas: 2 managers and 5 civil servants at lower levels. Summarizing findings, the evidence obtained here points out the development of studies that contribute to establish a theory that empirically supports the relation between job satisfaction, well-being at work, individual performance at work, and organizational structure that, thus, can provide some grounding to the widely spread assumption "happy, productive worker". In the end, this study also allowed raising some hypotheses for further quantitative studies; for instance, the organizational climate can positively enhance the relation between well-being at work and individual performance at work and the physical structure will be positively associated with individual performance at work.

TL;DR: In this article, a socio-historical analysis of transformational leadership in the field of administration is presented, in order to oppose its main arguments in relation to those made by transformational leaders in political and social movements.
Abstract: In Administration, leadership is linked to the interest in productive efficiency, assuming the capacity of leaders and subordinates to achieve organizational outcomes. However, leadership is an issue broader than what this conception can suppose. Understanding that this is the perspective adopted in the seminal text by Burns (1978) on transformational leadership, we propose in this study to revisit this work, in order to oppose its main arguments in relation to those made by transformational leadership authors in the field of Administration. To do this, we adopted the socio-historical analysis, as proposed by Stefani and Vizeu (2011), the first step of in-depth hermeneutics (THOMPSON, 2000), a method that aims to avoid the mistake of free interpretation of a work that is contextually situated. Thus, we conclude that the key point of transformational leadership, according to Burns, is the moral development issue and detachment in the utilitarian relationship between leader and subordinates. These two points are stressed throughout the text by means of the examples provided by the author, almost always related to the context of leadership in the political domain and that regarding social movements, where the ethical and moral issue is taken on a societal dimension.

TL;DR: In this paper, a qualitative and comparative case study on entrepreneurs from two religious organizations: the Reborn in Christ Evangelical Church and the Catholic organization Focolare Movement is presented, which indicates that the entrepreneurs from both organizations fill in the gaps of uncertainty generated by market circumstances, by searching for the "transcendent" which offers them the subjective safety needed for action.
Abstract: Having as its main theoretical support Weber’s classical sociology, which debates the relation of religious life to entrepreneurship, and Schumpeter’s approach to the entrepreneur, this article addresses the influence of religious belief on followers recognized as entrepreneurs. The research strategy was a qualitative and comparative case study on entrepreneurs from two religious organizations: the Reborn in Christ Evangelical Church and the Catholic organization Focolare Movement. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentary research. The results indicate that the entrepreneurs from both organizations fill in the gaps of uncertainty generated by market circumstances, by searching for the “transcendent”, which offers them the subjective safety needed for action. It was also possible to find out that they develop skills that are not restricted to mere economic behavior, a dimension in which their actions are shown as irrational, but in line with the “entrepreneurial spirit”, such as faith and hope. These skills come close to Schumpeter’s concept of entrepreneur.

TL;DR: In this article, a pesquisa of assedio moral in negocios is presented, with the goal of identifying divergencias and convergences entre sentencas/processos procedentes verificados in the Justica do Trabalho, bem como analisa os discursos dos autos, das vitimas e dos gestores das organizacoes responsabilizadas.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reveal the foundations of an unconventional form of social organization observed in Brazil's South region, the Faxinal community, and adopt a historical approach to grasp traits and characteristics that, although lost or abandoned, may be useful regarding the study objectives.
Abstract: This essay reveals the foundations of an unconventional form of social organization observed in Brazil's South region, the Faxinal. Methodologically, from the perspective that the Faxinal community embodies a traditional form of organization that has decreased dramatically in recent decades and that many of its original features have changed, we decided to adopt a historical approach. This was a means used to grasp traits and characteristics that, although lost or abandoned, may be instructive regarding the study objectives. Historically, capitalism has taken a position of higher order, by disseminating ideological principles and rationality as possibilities of evolution and better life when compared to the traditional foundations of social organization. The hegemonic view of the dominant model, with determinations imposed by instrumental rationality, pose limits to the richness deriving from the multiplicity of beliefs, traditions, particular customs and practices of the Faxinais, as it supports the generation of ideas and thoughts aimed at maintaining the rationale of development and progress. Thus, substantive organizational phenomena, such as the Faxinais, are situated in a historical process of construction, subject to the local social context of Brazilian regions marginalized by the urbanization and rationalization process of the capitalist economy, which has led their members to devise ways of organizing the social, economic, and political life based on principles different from those that support ideologically the capitalist organizational model. Therefore, the characteristics of the Faxinais point out Unconventional Form of Organization that break with the assumptions of the Organizational Studies.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyze the potential of management councils of public policies to foster a democratic deepening in management of public policy, particularly by strengthening conditions that enable an egalitarian decision-making process, and conclude that such potential is closely related to the geographical domain and the sectoral scope.
Abstract: The proliferation of management councils of public policies gives rise to assessing their potential to deepen the democratic contents of the public management and increase the effectiveness of public policies through social control. With this purpose, this theoretical essay opposes the representative and deliberative dimensions in democracy to criticism against the representative system and the democratic method of aggregating preferences, and it also analyzes the propensity for government accountability as for the signalization of policies processed by the council. Argumentation relies on significant international studies about the models of representative and deliberative democracy and on dialogue with Brazilian studies addressing the theme social control. It is concluded that the councils have potential to foster a democratic deepening in management of public policies, particularly by strengthening conditions that enable an egalitarian decision-making process. Nevertheless, such potential is closely related to the geographical domain and the sectoral scope: municipal participatory bodies with an only scope have greater democratic potential than national bodies having a broader range of themes. In any case, making this potential a reality is conditioned to institutional arrangements that enable incentives to ensure the legitimacy of representatives both of the civil society and the government, the egalitarian decision-making process, and the availability of tools to enforce council's decisions. This article hopes to contribute to developing the analytical tools needed to study the councils and build effective institutional arrangements of these bodies vis-a-vis their democratic and effectiveness goals.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors introduce the organizational silence on the research agenda on Organizational Behavior in Brazil and present what the foreign literature points out as motives that lead employees to remain silent and the consequences of this silence both for them and for the organization.
Abstract: With the changes that happened from the 1970s, organizations started to demand more participation of their employees in work processes' decisions. Open and frank communication becomes vital in this scenario. The organizational silence (MORRISON e MILLIKEN, 2000) and the employee silence (PINDER e HARLOS, 2001) are to be studied in more depth to understand the behaviors that lead employees to voice, via speaking up, or to remain silent. Since the 2000s, silence has gained an increasing research interest (BRINSFIELD, EDWARDS e GREENBERG, 2009), and this paper aims to introduce the organizational silence on the research agenda on Organizational Behavior in Brazil. Therefore, we present what the foreign literature points out as motives that lead employees to remain silent, and the consequences of this silence both for them and for the organization. We believe, however, that there are limitations in the reflections developed. To prevent a domesticated introduction of knowledge, we present some still emerging reflections on the subject based on debates by some Brazilian scholars (especially, TRAGTENBERG, 1971; 2005; PRESTES MOTTA, 1981; PAES DE PAULA, 2002; FARIA e MENEGHETTI, 2011) on the ideological character and, therefore, oppressive side of the knowledge produced by management science. So, we criticize some of the underlying assumptions of the organizational silence theory, drawing attention to the role of the organization itself as sponsor of both silence and the consequences that may arise from it.

TL;DR: In this article, Guerreiro Ramos and Jurgen Habermas discuss substantive and communicative rationality, as a counterpoint to the instrumental trend in industrial modern society, and propose the concepts of substantiveness and communicativeness as a sustainable alternative for reversing the one-dimensionalization process.
Abstract: This theoretical essay aims to pay a tribute to Alberto Guerreiro Ramos on the eve of his centenary. Thus, our approach consists in highlighting the vigor of his work by covering the main epistemological contributions, above all regarding the rationality issue, which is also discussed from the first generation critical theorists and Jurgen Habermas' viewpoint. The debate mainly focuses on the concepts of substantive and communicative rationality, as a counterpoint to the instrumental trend. Instrumental rationality, regarding its utilitarian, impersonal, and mechanistic nature, became hegemonic in the industrial modern society. In opposition, the concepts of substantiveness and communicativeness emerge, which, linked to the human psyche by means of ethical and moral features, perhaps constitute the best sustainable alternative for reversing the one-dimensionalization process. By comparing Ramos and Habermas' writings, both regarding the solution to the rationality issue and concerning the society models proposed by both of them, this theoretical essay promotes the conciliation between the Brazilian author's ideas and the current critical theory, demonstrating their complementarities and boundaries.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose an analytical structure that reconciles elements of agency and context in the analysis of institutional change dynamics, based on the interconnection between the institutional work and gradual institutional change approaches.
Abstract: This essay introduce an analytical structure that seeks reconciling elements of agency and context in the analysis of institutional change dynamics. The framework is based on the interconnection between the institutional work and gradual institutional change approaches. Both were created as alternatives to theoretical perspectives that put too much emphasis on social structure (e.g. path dependence theory) or to human agency (e.g. institutional entrepreneurship). However, despite the analytical gains that both of them have brought to the study of institutional change, they are still strongly tied to the assumptions of the research traditions through which they have emerged. A rapprochement between such theoretical schemes allows greater rigor to investigate processes of institutional change and enables greater awareness of the assumptions inherent to each perspective, as well as it encourages the search for more balanced alternatives for explaining institutional maintenance and change. At the heart of this proposal, there is a search for understanding the dynamics of institutional life. The institutional context exhibits a certain level of institutional plasticity and it can be modified according to the availability of practices, meanings, and resources. Therealization of this potential for change is dependent on institutional actors' reflexivity levels, and their munificence of resources. The practices of institutional creation, maintenance, and disruption in a particular context will, therefore, result from the interaction between the institutional context characteristics (the level of institutional plasticity) and the types of institutional actors (the level of institutional discretion) involved.

Abstract: In this essay, we connect ourselves with the efforts provided by some authors to elaborate a radical and ethical critique in the field of Organization Studies (OS) liberated, at least in some parts, from the colonization by management. In this direction, we take as reference the propositions of Enrique Dussel's Philosophy of Liberation (PL), which are critically situated in Latin America. In the first part, we present a comprehensive overview of this vast oeuvre, justified by the partial and even incoherent appropriation that has been happening in OS. In the second part, we discuss some of these appropriations considering some Latin American authors of the OS field, highlighting specially the Brazilian context. This critical dialogue is indispensable to liberate the path for the contribution of Dussel's PL to the exercise of a critique that negates, side by side with the victims, the legitimacy of a system that explores and oppresses, and that, simultaneously, gets involved with the affirmation of human life in community, and therefore, with the praxis of liberation.

Abstract: This study aimed to characterize the mobbing in corporation environments in the light of the conceptual paradigm of what is conceived as 'human dignity' and breach of the principle of good faith. Specifically, it aimed to identify patterns in legal arguments and framing harmful practices to mental health worker. The study, qualitative, was based on the study of legal situations, guided definition of demand and characterization of insistence practice in organizational scope and the limits of the concept of human dignity. As a main result, the study put in contrast the need for contextualization of propellant fact of the complaint and characterization of mobbing, without forgetting the importance of meaning or sense given by the individual to the phenomenon analyzed.

Abstract: Este ensaio teorico focaliza temas concernentes a administracao das universidades.

TL;DR: The subject's issue within the post-structuralist movement, above all in Lacanian epistemology, and its break with the traditional view on the subject in modernity, thinking through its influence on organizational theories is discussed in this article.
Abstract: This article discusses the subject's issue within the post-structuralist movement, above all in Lacanian epistemology, and its break with the traditional view on the subject in modernity, thinking through its influence on organizational theories. The modern subject is the Cartesian cogito's subject, full and self-conscious. The notes by Nietzsche and, above all, Lacan deconstruct the Cartesian subject's essentialist traits to replace it by a subject who is constituted in and through language. This ontological quality of being does not allow its closure in a fixed identity. According to Lacan, the subject is always lack-to-be, who moves from identification to identification, in a necessary and structuring contingency.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors revisited the thought of Alberto Guerreiro Ramos, in a way to explore his theoretical contributions to the field of development administration, in which he has analyzed the development management, direct or indirectly.
Abstract: Currently, the Critical Studies in Administration (ECA - Estudos Criticos em Administracao) and the Critical Studies in Development (ECD - Estudos Criticos em Desenvolvimento) show a clear concern in including the phenomenon of development management in their researches. However, it is clear that, in the 1960s, there was already a concern by Guerreiro Ramos to relate the phenomenon of management with the development of nations. Therefore, this study aims to revisit the thought of Alberto Guerreiro Ramos, in a way to explore his theoretical contributions to the field of Development Administration. This is an exploratory study of the author's bibliographical contribution, in which he has analyzed the development management, direct or indirectly. The result of the analysis reveals that some important concepts as the administrative fact, substantive reasoning, parenthetical man and multicenter society are fundamental issues to understand the Development Administration as a discipline aiming to study the management of social relations of production, distribution and consumption of countries, regions, places or organizations.
