TL;DR: In this paper, a nonlinear, least squares computer program is used to determine the best-fit parameters for experimental data presented in the literature, based on the assumption that the shape of the soil-water characteristic curve is dependent upon the pore-size distribution.
Abstract: The soil-water characteristic curve can be used to estimate various parameters used to describe unsaturated soil behaviour. A general equation for the soil-water characteristic curve is proposed. A nonlinear, least-squares computer program is used to determine the best-fit parameters for experimental data presented in the literature. The equation is based on the assumption that the shape of the soil-water characteristic curve is dependent upon the pore-size distribution of the soil (i.e., the desaturation is a function of the pore-size distribution). The equation has the form of an integrated frequency distribution curve. The equation provides a good fit for sand, silt, and clay soils over the entire suction range from 0 to 106 kPa. Key words : soil-water characteristic curve, pore-size distribution, nonlinear curve fitting, soil suction, water content.

TL;DR: In this paper, the three primary sources of geotechnical uncertainties are inherent variability, measurem, and measurem uncertainties, and the three main sources of variability are measurem and inherent variability.
Abstract: Geotechnical variability is a complex attribute that results from many disparate sources of uncertainties. The three primary sources of geotechnical uncertainties are inherent variability, measurem...

TL;DR: In this paper, the transition from a saturated soil to an unsaturated soil is described in terms of two independent stress state variables, i.e., the shear strength of unsaturated and saturated soil.
Abstract: The shear strength of an unsaturated soil is written in terms of two independent stress state variables. One form of the shear strength equation isThe transition from a saturated soil to an unsatur...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that shear strength data from the research literature suggests that there is a nonlinear increase in the strength of unsaturated soils in the presence of saturated soils.
Abstract: Experimental studies on unsaturated soils are generally costly, time-consuming, and difficult to conduct. Shear strength data from the research literature suggests that there is a nonlinear increas...

TL;DR: In this article, the phenomena of soil liquefaction are described, and suitable definitions and definitions are provided for these phenomena are reviewed and an update of the existing definitions is provided.
Abstract: Soil liquefaction is a major concern for structures constructed with or on sandy soils. This paper describes the phenomena of soil liquefaction, reviews suitable definitions, and provides an update...
