TL;DR: In this article, a rapid technique was developed for dissolving successive thin layers of metal from the surface of an aluminum foil: viz. electrochemical oxidation at constant voltage in aqueous ammonium citrate, followed by removal of the oxide film in a phosphoric acid -chromic oxide solution.
Abstract: A rapid technique has been developed for dissolving successive thin layers of metal from the surface of an aluminum foil: viz. electrochemical oxidation at constant voltage in aqueous ammonium citrate, followed by removal of the oxide film in a phosphoric acid – chromic oxide solution. Due to the highly protective nature of the aluminum oxide film, this two-step process enables very uniform surface layers of metal as thin as 1 μ/cm2 to be removed. The total weight of aluminum dissolved increases with the applied anodic voltage at a rate of 0.30 μg cm−1 volt−1 (approximately 11 A per volt) over the range 0–150 volts. The technique should be sufficiently sensitive to study the depth of penetration in aluminum of radioactive ions with kinetic energies as low as a few kiloelectron volts. An approximate value for the range of Na24 recoil atoms from the Al27 (n,α) reaction was obtained. A more extensive application to range studies is given in the next paper.

Abstract: It is shown that the effect of solvent upon a wide variety of equilibria, reaction rates, and spectral shifts may be described by the equation log (ksolvent/kethanol) = SR. S is a constant related to the polarity of the solvent and R is a measure of the sensitivity of the system to change in solvent polarity. Tables of S and R are included.

TL;DR: In this paper, gas-liquid partition chromatography has been used to separate all of the possible tetra- and tri-O-methyl ethers of methyl α- and β-D-glucopyranoside.
Abstract: Gas–liquid partition chromatography has been used to separate all of the possible tetra- and tri-O-methyl ethers of methyl α- and β-D-glucopyranoside. Anomeric methyl glycosides of each isomer were well separated except those of 3,4,6-tri-O-methyl-D-glucose. The six di-O-methyl-D-glucopyranoses were partially resolved as their methyl glycosides. The four possible mono-O-methyl-D-glucopyranoses were completely resolved after conversion to the corresponding mono-O-methyl-penta-O-acetyl-D-glucitols, a series of compounds which, except for the 6-O-methyl isomer, have not been reported previously. Quantitative estimations of mixtures containing varying amounts of methyl-2,3,4-tri-O-methyl-β-D-xylopyranoside and methyl-2,3,4,6-tetra-O-methyl-α-D-glucopyranoside showed that molar ratios of components in a mixture could be determined with a mean deviation of ±0.5 in 100.

TL;DR: In this article, the fundamental factors which determine isotope separation factors on adsorbents, based on hydrogen and deuterium isotherms reported in Part I, were investigated, and the results showed that the horizontal zero-point vibrations of the adsorbed species in some cases constitute an important contributing factor.
Abstract: An investigation has been made of the fundamental factors which determine isotope separation factors on adsorbents, based on hydrogen and deuterium isotherms reported in Part I. Through the use of a semiempirical thermodynamic approach, the binary separation factors α have been related to the single component isotherms (p = f(v)), and these in turn broken down into a number of terms involving the isosteric heat of adsorption q, temperature T, and surface coverage. If the less important contributions are neglected, the treatment leads to the following sequence of approximate relations:where e0 = total vibrational zero-point energy of adsorbed molecules. The rigorous form of equation [I] agrees well with the experimental results, and semi-quantitative agreement with the data is shown by equation [II]. A qualitative discussion of [III] is given. It is suggested that the horizontal zero-point vibrations of the adsorbed species in some cases constitute an important contributing factor in addition to the vertica...

TL;DR: A simple electrostatic accelerator capable of producing a monoenergetic beam of alkali metal ions at energies up to 100 kev has been used to study the range of Cs137 ions in aluminum as a function of energy.
Abstract: A simple electrostatic accelerator capable of producing a monoenergetic beam of alkali metal ions at energies up to 100 kev has been used to study the range of Cs137 ions in aluminum as a function of energy. The median range (RM) increases linearly with energy as predicted from the Bohr–Nielsen equation, but has a value about twice that predicted by this equation. Furthermore, the observed straggling about the mean value is not Gaussian in shape, but consists of an asymmetric peak with a pronounced exponential "tail". The possible significance of these results is discussed. Preliminary results are given for the range of 30-kev Rb86 and Na21 ions in aluminum.

TL;DR: In this paper, the wavelengths of minimum specular reflectivity (at 11° incidence) due to interference were determined using a spectrophotometer for a series of films formed on chemically polished niobium.
Abstract: The wavelengths of minimum specular reflectivity (at 11° incidence) due to interference were determined using a spectrophotometer for a series of films formed on chemically polished niobium. With a value of the refractive index n = 2.46 ± 1% at 4358 A wavelength by the Abeles method (reported elsewhere), the spectrophotometric data give the refractive index as a function of the wavelength λ, n = 2.26 + 0.398/(λ/103 A − 2.56)1.2. To analyze the spectrophotometric results, an auxiliary measure of thickness was required (though, with the chart given below, the thickness of a film may be determined directly from spectrophotometric measurements alone). A combination of measurements of the a-c. capacity and of the charge required to form the films gives a suitable measure of thickness (in terms of ρ/e, where e = dielectric constant and ρ = density) which is not dependent on a knowledge of the true surface area. The spectrophotometric data provide a calibration of this measure of thickness and thus give e/ρ. Wit...

Abstract: The system of bond and group energies described in Part I has been extended and applied to certain compounds containing sulphur and oxygen. The substances treated are the alkanethiols, the thiaalkanes, and the dithiaalkanes. The bond additivity scheme enables reliable values for heats of formation, combustion, atomization, and vaporization to be calculated for these compounds.A similar treatment has been applied to the data for alcohols, ethers, and alkyl peroxides.

TL;DR: In this paper, the structures of III and IV were established by infrared spectroscopy and by their reaction with sodium methoxide, and the exo-tosyloxy group of the monoacetate of III resists replacement by iodide ion.
Abstract: Reaction of 1,4;3,6-dianhydro-D-glucitol (isosorbide) with an equimolar amount of tosyl chloride in pyridine gave a fourfold greater yield of the endo-5-tosylate (IV) than of the exo-2-tosylate (III). Compound III reacted about 1.4 times more rapidly with tosyl chloride than did IV. The structures of III and IV were established by infrared spectroscopy and by their reaction with sodium methoxide. The exo-tosyloxy group of the monoacetate of III resists replacement by iodide ion.
