TL;DR: In this article, the theoretical relationship between the processes of map use and map making is examined, in which the map is regarded as a communication system, and a Commission on Cartographic Information is recommended.
Abstract: An examination is made of the theoretical relationship between the processes of map use and of map making, in which the map is regarded as a communication system. This has developed from practical work originally done with regard to a series of school atlases in Czechoslovakia. A Commission on 'Cartographic Information' is recommended.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors deal with the nature of the sampling errors which may occur in measurement of area by a square pattern "dot planimeter" and the important conclusion is that the relative error of measurement is small if the count of points is of the order of 100 per parcel.
Abstract: This paper deals with the nature of the sampling errors which may occur in measurement of area by a square pattern 'dot planimeter'. The important conclusion is that the relative error of measurement is small if the count of points is of the order of 100 per parcel. The authors recommend the use of different sizes of point pattern for the measurement of different sizes of parcel, rather than the use of a single overlay for the measurement of every parcel on a given map. The theoretical work is supported by some results of measurements made on the McKay Pattern Map using the MK Area Calculator.

TL;DR: An account is given of the theoretical and practical problems of producing a series of maps from available statistical data and a simple program was developed for use with the KDF9 computer with line printer output.
Abstract: An account is given of the theoretical and practical problems of producing a series of maps from available statistical data. The source material and in particular the disparities in area of the statistical units are treated in detail. A simple program was developed for use with the KDF9 computer with line printer output, and eventually this was used to provide a compilation for drawing rather than a finished product.

TL;DR: The Urban Planning Directorate of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government has recently developed the computer mapping system LINMAP 1 (LINe printer MAPping) to illustrate the use and facility of the Coordinate Referencing System for locating statistical information in geographical space as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The Urban Planning Directorate of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government has recently developed the computer mapping system LINMAP 1 (LINe printer MAPping) to illustrate the use and facility of the Coordinate Referencing System for locating statistical information in geographical space. Current work on the second, very much extended version of this system, together with the development of the COLMAP (COLour MAPping) system, is described in this article.

TL;DR: In this article, a short review of the methods followed and the results which have been obtained in Delft at the Topographic Service of the Netherlands and at the International Training Centre for Aerial Survey and Earth Sciences are discussed.
Abstract: This paper comprises a short review of the methods followed and the results which have been obtained in Delft at the Topographic Service of the Netherlands and at the International Training Centre for Aerial Survey and Earth Sciences. After an introduction describing the principle of orthophotograph production, applications in the Netherlands, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and Mauritius are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the methods available for locating watermarks in old series maps and their contribution to dating is analysed. But their main conclusion is that the watermarks enable a particular sheet to be dated within a few years, especially in the period 1823-36.
Abstract: This . paper discusses the methods available for locating watermarks in Old Series maps. The watermarks found in over 2000 maps and their contribution to dating are analysed. The main conclusion is that the watermarks enable a particular sheet to be dated within a few years, especially in the period 1823-36.

TL;DR: A detailed account of the history and development of the Economic Map of Sweden is given in this article, followed by a detailed description of the changeover to an orthophoto base, and the problems encountered in the use of the first equipment for full production.
Abstract: A brief account of the history and development of the Economic Map of Sweden is followed by a detailed description of the changeover to an orthophoto base, and the problems encountered in the use of the first equipment for full production. Detailed costs are given of the production stages of comparable photomaps and orthophoto maps. Finally a new and improved device for the interpolation and direct production of contour lines is described. The paper was presented to the annual Symposium of the Society in September 1969, at the University of Glasgow.

TL;DR: In this article, the development of an Automated Cartographic System (ACS) is described as currently being carried out by the United States Air Force at Rome Air Development Center.
Abstract: A paper is presented on the development of an Automated Cartographic System as is currently being carried out by the United States Air Force at Rome Air Development Center. Included are the system's concepts and overall goals of the program. Of particular interest is Experimental Cartographic Facility (ECF) and the Experimental Colour Scanner. The ECF has resulted from a continuing need for improved mechanisation and eventual automation in the field of cartography. The Experimental Colour Scanner is under development for evaluation purposes and will be used in the ECF program to evaluate its utility for manuscript manipulation.
