TL;DR: In this paper, two algorithms to reduce the number of points required to represent the line and, if desired, produce caricatures are presented and compared with the most promising methods so far suggested.
Abstract: All digitizing methods, as a general rule, record lines with far more data than is necessary for accurate graphic reproduction or for computer analysis. Two algorithms to reduce the number of points required to represent the line and, if desired, produce caricatures, are presented and compared with the most promising methods so far suggested. Line reduction will form a major part of automated generalization.

TL;DR: In this article, the traditional rules of cartography, long rooted in a scientific epistemology of the map as an objective form of knowledge, are reviewed as an object of deconstruction.
Abstract: The paper draws on ideas in postmodern thinking to redefine the nature of maps as representations of power. The traditional rules of cartography – long rooted in a scientific epistemology of the map as an objective form of knowledge – will first be reviewed as an object of deconstruction. Second, a deconstructionist argument will explore the textuality of maps, including their metaphorical and rhetorical nature. Third, the paper will examine the dimensions both of external power and of the omnipresence of internal power in the cartographic representation of place.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new definition of the map is proposed, and it is argued that a map is a weapon in the fight for social dominion, one disguised as a representation of the world, but which in reality links territory with what comes with it (with voting rights or military service obligations, with rates of rainfall or types of vegetation).
Abstract: This paper proposes a new definition of the map. It is argued that a map is a weapon in the fight for social dominion, one disguised as a representation of the world, but which in reality links territory with what comes with it (with voting rights or military service obligations, with rates of rainfall or types of vegetation). The map achieves this linkage by fusing onto a common plane (that of the map) multicoded images of the very world the map itself will bring into being.

TL;DR: This paper defines the critical components of cartographic time and compares temporal and spatial topologies, and presents three conceptualizations of temporal geographic information and selects one as the most promising basis for a temporal geographicInformation system.
Abstract: This paper defines the critical components of cartographic time and compares temporal and spatial topologies. Because time is topologically similar to space, spatial data structuring principles can be adapted to temporal data. We present three conceptualizations of temporal geographic information and select one as the most promising basis for a temporal geographic information system. This conceptualization creates a spatial composite of all geometric information (at all times), where each object has an attribute history distinct from that of its neighbors.

TL;DR: This framework is used to provide clarification of how varying data models, as well as their inherent advantages and disadvantages, are interrelated, and provides an insight into how these conflicting demands may be balanced in a more systematic and predictable manner for practical applications.
Abstract: This paper examines the major types of spatial data models currently known and places these models in a comprehensive framework. This framework is used to provide clarification of how varying data models, as well as their inherent advantages and disadvantages, are interrelated. It also provides an insight into how these conflicting demands may be balanced in a more systematic and predictable manner for practical applications, and reveals directions for needed future research.
