TL;DR: A practical method for bringing biographical dictionaries together in one section of the reference shelves is the use of alternative class numbers printed in the CT schedule, discussed as a case study.
Abstract: The Library of Congress classification system distributes biographical works throughout the collection, a result of questionable desirability for reference collections. A practical method for bringing biographical dictionaries together in one section of the reference shelves is the use of alternative class numbers printed in the CT schedule. The application of this method by the Library of the University of Wisconsin- Parkside is discussed as a case study.

TL;DR: The purpose of this paper is to provide subject cataloguers with some insights from the state of the art of indexing.
Abstract: Indexing and cataloguing are conceptually the same activity, even though they differ in practice in the United States today. The purpose of this paper is to provide subject cataloguers with some insights from the state of the art of indexing. Catalogues and indexes differ in practice primarily in that the former are expected to be all things to all people, while the latter can be specialized to meet specific needs. Indexes typically analyze smaller items, thus providing deeper access; they are more flexible, especially in vocabulary and in file permanence, and they have better exploited the capabilities of the computer.

TL;DR: The method of integrating rules for nonbook materials with those for print materials in AACR2 is examined to see how well nonbooks materials are handled and whether the treatment of print materials is affected.
Abstract: The method of integrating rules for nonbook materials with those for print materials in AACR2 is examined to see how well nonbook materials are handled and whether the treatment of print materials is affected. Both choice of entry rules and rules for description are examined to see whether their provisions are in accordance with the needs of users of these materials, and/or the patterns of publication and identification of these materials. Areas needing further research are identified.

TL;DR: The principle of uniform heading underlies the rules for headings in descriptive cataloging in the American tradition and is considerably compromised in cataloging practice today.
Abstract: The principle of uniform heading underlies the rules for headings in descriptive cataloging in the American tradition. The rationale and the evolution of the principle are examined and its implications discussed in terms of the history of cataloging codes. The ideal embodied in the principle of uniform heading has been undergoing gradual modification in recent codes and considerably compromised in cataloging practice today.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors deal with problems encountered in applying AACR2 as interpreted by the Library of Congress to Hebrew and Yiddish personal names and discuss some problems relating to the romanization of such names and propose some solutions.
Abstract: This paper deals with problems encountered in applying AACR2 as interpreted by the Library of Congress to Hebrew and Yiddish personal names. It also discusses some problems relating to the romanization of such names and proposes some solutions. A plea is made for the eventual development of the capability to handle vernacular records for non-Roman languages in machine-readable form.

TL;DR: Three studies were made of the use of COM catalogues at the University of Toronto and the Mississauga Library System: unobtrusive observations, structured interviews, and a timed-search experiment in reel, fiche and card catalogues.
Abstract: Three studies were made of the use of COM catalogues at the University of Toronto and the Mississauga Library System: unobtrusive observations, structured interviews, and a timed-search experiment in reel, fiche and card catalogues. The reel catalogue was found to be the overwhelming favourite, almost as popular in the public library as in the academic library, where 82% of the users reported it to be their preferred form of catalogue. However, for nearly all test questions and searcher types in the timed-search experiment, successful searches required less time in the card catalogue than in either form of the COM catalogues.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify two portions of Subclass DT which pose special problems and propose several possible solutions to these problems and identify two classes which will be assigned in the future to cover the future historical developments of these countries.
Abstract: Subclass DT of the Library of Congress classification assigns comparatively brief spans of class numbers to many of the countries of East Africa and West Africa. Many of these spans leave very little space for classes which will be assigned in the future to cover the future historical developments of these countries. An analysis of twenty-nine revisions and relocations of these classifications which the LC personnel approved during 1980-82 shows that most of these changes have failed to address these notational problems. This study identifies two portions of Subclass DT which pose special problems and proposes several possible solutions to these problems.
