TL;DR: This paper evaluates previous matching studies, proposes a detailed list of matching categories, and tests LCSH in a study using these categories, showing that single LCSH headings match user expressions exactly about 47% of the time.
Abstract: Central to subject searching is the match between user vocabulary and the headings from Library of Congress Subject-Headings (LCSH) used in a library catalog. This paper evaluates previous matching studies, proposes a detailed list of matching categories, and tests LCSH in a study using these categories. Exact and partial match categories are defined for single LCSH and multiple LCSH matches to user expressions. One no-match category is included. Transaction logs from ORION, UCLA's online Information system, were used to collect user expressions for a comparison of LCSH and user language. Results show that single LCSH headings match user expressions exactly about 47% of the time; that single subject heading matches, including exact matches, comprise 74% of the total; that partial matches, to both single and multiple headings, comprise about 21% of the total; and that no match occurs 5% of the time.

TL;DR: The authors analyzed the Library of Congress (LC) class numbers and subject headings assigned to 164 works of history and criticism of literature (belles lettres) related to women's studies and found that less than half of these books were assigned to class numbers in PA-PT whose captions contain either the word "women" or another word which points to women studies, but slightly more than half were assigned "literature" subject heading which contain the words "women," "feminism", "feminist," or "sex role."
Abstract: This study analyzes the Library of Congress (LC) class numbers and the LC subject headings which LC has assigned to 164 works of history and criticism of literature (belles lettres) related to women's studies. These books were classed in more than one hundred different class numbers and spans of numbers. Less than half of these books were assigned to class numbers in PA-PT whose captions contain either the word "women" or another word which points to women's studies, but slightly more than half were assigned "literature" subject headings which contain the words "women," "feminism," "feminist," or "sex role." The subject heading "Women in literature" was assigned to forty of these books, while the words "women authors" appear in a series of different subject headings assigned to forty-five of these books.

TL;DR: The classification of literature by language can fragment national literatures and create groupings in which parts of the literatures of other nations are subordinated to that of the country of the "mother tongue" as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The classification of literature by language, while apparently eminently sensible, can fragment national literatures and create groupings in which parts of the literatures of other nations are subordinated to that of the country of the "mother tongue." Classifying literature in this way reflects, and implicitly endorses, literary colonialism. The exception which the Dewey Classification makes of American literature in English undermines the rule, and is not matched by similar treatment for African literature, for example. A more flexible approach to classifying literature is called for, which will recognize place as the ground of community and culture while not forgetting the importance of language as an element in national and cultural identity.

Abstract: This paper traces the efforts made by IFLA (the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions over the past three decades to promote the concept of Universal bibliographic Control in relation to authorities and authority control. It covers the work done by various groups within IFLA to develop standards for personal and corporate name headings, for authority and reference entries, and for UNIMARC/Authorities. The paper concludes with a summary of possible models for the future development of a systems infrastructure for international authority control.

Abstract: Research and recent "theoretical" discussions of authority control are synthesized and organized into the following groups: general overviews; need for research; need for unique access points for names; need for authority control outside traditional library catalogs; reference structure for names and its relationship to users' needs; authority control for works; authority control for subjects; need for authority files; and, technological considerations. Conclusions are drawn about the need for research in the area of file design.

TL;DR: An empirical study conducted using a sample of musical works and locating for each all physical manifestations in OCLC and the NUC concluded that an authority-controlled collocating device is necessary for musical works.
Abstract: The uniform title is viewed historically as an artificial device to collocate works. In music cataloging, problems of multiple manifestations with variant title pages lead to the development of uniform titles that would both collocate and distinguish, and ultimately serve as identifiers for musical works. A principal problem in the authority control of works is recognition of multiple manifestations and the concomitant syndetic depth. Research suggests a low incidence of multiple manifestations among textual works, but hints that a greater incidence might be found among musical works. An empirical study is conducted using a sample of musical works and locating for each all physical manifestations in OCLC and the NUC. Virtually the entire sample of musical works yielded multiple manifestations. A majority of the manifestations had titles proper different from that of the first edition of the work. It is concluded that an authority-controlled collocating device is necessary for musical works, that more refe...

TL;DR: Canadian library records, bilingual by statute, are created according to a common set of rules and standards, and true bilingual searching (a search in one language retrieving records in both languages) could be achieved by a built-in automatic translation module.
Abstract: Canadian library records, bilingual by statute, are created according to a common set of rules and standards. Subject access to the catalogue remains language dependent. Even searches by classification in some OPACs rely first on an alphabetical index as an entering key. Fully bilingual OPACs with authority control and reciprocal references in one file have yet to appear. Thus far the Canadian Workplace Automation Research Center has produced ISIR/SIRI with an online bilingual thesaurus. The National Library of Canada has developed withh DOBIS a bilingual system providing automatic linkages between records and authority files. But true bilingual searching (a search in one language retrieving records in both languages) could be achieved by a built-in automatic translation module. Total accommodation of diacritical marks by terminal keyboards and display monitors is also a challenge to be met.

TL;DR: In a random sample of persons with entries in the University of Chicago library general catalog, more than 80% had names appearing in only one form in all works.
Abstract: Recent research suggests that many authority records might be unnecessary in online systems with sophisticated programming. One problem in determining which names can be used without full authority records and the references they provide is that there has been little study of the names themselves, and patterns of variation are unknown. In a random sample of persons with entries in the University of Chicago library general catalog, more than 80% had names appearing in only one form in all works. The study also catagorizes the differences among the forms of those names that do appear in more than one way.

TL;DR: The main purpose of the study was to determine if the online catalog can function both as a dictionary and classified catalog without requiring additional time or intellectual effort on the part of the cataloger.
Abstract: The main purpose of the study was to determine if the online catalog can function both as a dictionary and classified catalog without requiring additional time or intellectual effort on the part of the cataloger. A total of 1842 MARC bibliographic records listed in the 370-379 classified section of American Book Publishing Record were studied. These records displayed 2735 subject headings. Of these, 1491 (55%) had a Library of Congress classification number linked to them. An alphabetical and classified index was created using primary subjects and their related classification numbers. While such an index could be a useful browsing device if integrated into an online catalog, creating a bona fide classified catalog would require assigning classification numbers to the secondary subject headings.

TL;DR: Libraries need to look carefully at the MARC format and at enhanced and enriched subject approaches and machine-generated links and leads can provide more paths and wider access to subject information.
Abstract: Finding books by subject in large libraries is a difficult task at the best of times. Since users seldom think of their topic in terms of library subject headings, they encounter problems in finding matches. Online catalogs have helped somewhat by allowing keyword searching and Boolean combinations. They have also perpetuated some problems (lack of authority control and of cross references) and created new ones, namely requiring users to acquire complex skills. Libraries need to look carefully at the MARC format and at enhanced and enriched subject approaches. Machine-generated links and leads can provide more paths and wider access to subject information.

TL;DR: Unique aspects of AMC cataloging are described, including differing approaches to access points, form of entry, title, physical description, notes, subject headings, and call numbers.
Abstract: The development and use of the MARC Archival and Manuscript Control (AMC) format is described. The format's unique characteristics stem largely from the needs of the archival community for both a uniform means of control of materials at the collection level and a powerful tool for exchanging information about archival holdings. AMC cataloging does not replace, but rather forms an additional component of traditional archival arrangement and description activities. Unique aspects of AMC cataloging are described, including differing approaches to access points, form of entry, title, physical description, notes, subject headings, and call numbers.

TL;DR: The original cataloging records of a marine science library were examined to determine frequency of use and patterns of subsequent use suggest cataloging priorities and changes to records indicate areas for attention to database quality control.
Abstract: The original cataloging records of a marine science library were examined to determine frequency of use. The present study, patterned after an earlier study of municipal reference materials, shows an overall use rate of 45%. Patterns of subsequent use of original cataloging records suggest cataloging priorities, and changes to records indicate areas for attention to database quality control.

TL;DR: This study investigates the actual use of the Library of Congress Name Authority File by catalogers in an RLIN member library and results show that some aspects of authority control could be expedited by changes in cataloging practice and search software.
Abstract: The costs of authority control are high and the information provided in authority files is often duplicated in separate bibliographic files. Librarians need to examine the compatibility of traditional methods of authority control with the advanced capabilities of current computer systems. This study investigates the actual use of the Library of Congress Name Authority File (LCNAF) by catalogers in an RLIN member library. Results show that some aspects of authority control could be expedited by changes in cataloging practice and search software.

TL;DR: The "Description Unit-Card System of NCR1977, which adopted the no-main-entry principle, seems to be the one which is needed in the age of the computer catalog.
Abstract: When a unit card has become easy to reproduce, and each entry has an equal value for users in a multiple-entry catalog, the main-entry principle is no longer useful. The historical development of the no-main-entry principle in Japan is examined. It is generally considered that a title entry is the Oriental tradition. However, Japanese catalogers had used codes based upon the main entry principle under the influence of both AACR and the Paris Principles until 1977, when a new code of Nippon Cataloging Rules (NCR) was compiled. The "Description Unit-Card System of NCR1977, which adopted the no-main-entry principle, seems to be the one which is needed in the age of the computer catalog.

TL;DR: This project could serve as a prototype by which other private or public art collections could receive thorough, enhanced documentation of the massive body of work of the artist Anne Ward Huey.
Abstract: Since 1986, a project has been underway to catalog a private collection of the massive body of work of the artist Anne Ward Huey. The project has progressed from a handwritten card file to a computer file using AACR 2 and OCLC tags and format. A compact disc or videotape file is also presently projected. In addition to taking traditional library cataloging out of the library setting, the project has addressed a number of problems involved in cataloging silkscreen prints, and the records created by the project also contain information that AACR 2 does not specifically address but that artists consider important. The author recommends that the cataloging rules be revised to encompass these specific aspects of cataloging art work. This project could serve as a prototype by which other private or public art collections could receive thorough, enhanced documentation.

TL;DR: During the years 1984-85, the arrival of an integrated automated library system (NOTIS) forced Auburn University Libraries to reevaluate the status of its name authority system and developed a new authority structure with current and potential capabilities superior to the previous manual system.
Abstract: During the years 1984-85, the arrival of an integrated automated library system (NOTIS) forced Auburn University Libraries to reevaluate the status of its name authority system. Central to the evaluation process was the preservation of the major investment made in the card name authority file as a result of AACR2. To achieve this, a process of migrating the valuable information from the card file into an online environment was developed. The final result of this process was a new authority structure with current and potential capabilities superior to the previous manual system.

TL;DR: The paper proposes the appointment of subject specialists to monitor the assignment of subject headings at the Library of Congress in recognition of the intellectual complexity of LCSH.
Abstract: This paper suggests that the cataloging community may be setting its goals too low in its approach to online subject access. Truly effective subject retrieval for online catalog users will not be possible until the Library of Congress gives a higher priority to consistency in the assignment of subject headings. In recognition of the intellectual complexity of LCSH, the paper proposes the appointment of subject specialists to monitor the assignment of subject headings at the Library of Congress.
