TL;DR: A key to pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry literature and training of literature chemists are discussed in the Advances series as mentioned in this paper, with the focus on the training of chemistry chemists, which is a subject of great interest to the literature chemist.
Abstract: NUMBERS 16 and 17 in the Advances series have made their appearance. The titles are: "A Key to Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry Literature" and "Training of literature Chemists." The first is a collection of papers presented before the Divisions of Chemical Literature and Medicinal Chemistry; the second consists of papers given before a joint meeting of the Divisions of Chemical Education and Chemical Literature. Glancing at the titles of subjects covered to date in the Advances series, it becomes evident that a substantial literature is being built by literature chemists, largely through the divisions in the AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY. Number 4, "Searching the Chemical Literature," has been reprinted several times and frequently is referred to as the "bible" of literature chemists. Number 10, "Literature Resources for Chemical Process Industries," is in much demand. Nomenclature is a subject of direct importance to the literature chemist, and Number 8, entitled "Chemical Nomenclature," and ...

TL;DR: The second edition of the ACS Directory of Graduate Research, compiled by this committee, has just been released as mentioned in this paper, which contains the titles of nearly 20,000 recent publications of more than 2000 instructional staff members of the 151 U. S. colleges and universities which offer the Ph.D. in chemistry or chemical engineering.
Abstract: One would hardly expect the Committee on Professional Training to be the unqualified experts of the AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY on the phenomenal growth of chemical literature during the past several years. Yet, in recent weeks, members of this committee have become leading candidates for the speaker's podium if this subject is under discussion. The second edition of the ACS Directory of Graduate Research , compiled by this committee, has just been released. It contains the titles of nearly 20,000 recent publications of more than 2000 instructional staff members of the 151 U. S. colleges and universities which offer the Ph.D. in chemistry or chemical engineering. The result is a king-sized volume of 446 pages, nearly twice as big as the original edition offered for sale in 1954. It is more than eight times the size of its predecessor, Titles of Theses Submitted for Doctoral Degrees in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering , released in January 1953. Research is ...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the problem of logical interpretation of facts and logical interpretation in scientific and engineering publications, and present a solution to the problem, which they call logical interpretation.
Abstract: SCIENTISTS and engineers, by the nature of their professions, usually have something to say and the need to say it. Their subject matter usually deals with facts and the logical interpretation ther...

TL;DR: A few days ago, we received a telephone call from a friend in New York who has a vital stake in the continued prosperity of the American chemical industry as discussed by the authors, and to put it mildly, he was considerably disturbed.
Abstract: As the Late Al Smith Said, "Let's Look at the Record" A FEW DAYS ago we received a telephone call from a friend in New York who has a vital stake in the continued prosperity of the American chemical industry. To put it mildly, he was considerably disturbed. Riding in with a commuter friend he had heard in a rather vague and second-hand fashion that certain economists had announced to a selected list of clients that the chemical industry was likely to be in an over-produced position for the next 10 years. Would I confirm or deny such an opinion? Such a sweeping statement, without our knowing all the surrounding details, as not easy for us to answer with a categorical no. Thousands of commercial chemicals are produced, some at the moment may be overproduced, others are probably in relatively short supply. We think the question posed by our friend from New York can best ...

TL;DR: The 1955 Committee on Professional Relations and Status report as discussed by the authors showed that deep-seated changes had occurred in the salary relationships among the Society's members and that a re-evaluation of the economic status of the entire membership was in order.
Abstract: Statement of the 1955 Committee on Professional Relations and Status THE decade following publication of the Society's 1944 comprehensive survey of the economic status of its members 1 was one of profound change. The burgeoning national economy, dependent to an increasing extent on scientific research and development; the consequent inadequacy of the supply of chemists and chemical engineers, particularly those newly trained; the steady increase in starting salaries as a result of competition for the inadequate supply of recent graduates; and persisting inflationary trends throughout this period, all combined to make it evident that deep-seated changes had occurred in the salary relationships among the Society's members and that a re-evaluation of the economic status of the entire membership was in order. This view was strengthened by the committee's study, published late in 1952 2 , of fragmentary salary data for 1950 collected incidental to another study by the Committee on Data for Evaluating National ...

TL;DR: In every age of trouble, there is a widespread temptation to look for some central cause, some generating center of dissidence and unrest as discussed by the authors, and the trouble today lies in the crass materialism of a...
Abstract: PRESIDENT HILDEBRAND'S address, "Intelligence is Important," published in C&EN last Oct. 17 is a vigorous and outspoken statement. The presumption of an outside reader is that it needs some kind of reply. If it is not inapropos to intrude into the province of the engineer, a student of education would like to continue the dialectic, hoping to present the matter from another point of view and possibly clarify and illuminate an apparently dark corner of modern life, i.e., the theory and practice of modern education. Public School a "Whipping Boy" Our age is thought to be an age of special difficulty, an age of crisis, an age of turmoil and trouble. I don't suppose anyone now alive would deny it. In every age of trouble, there is a widespread temptation to look for some central cause, some generating center of dissidence and unrest. Some say the trouble today lies in the crass materialism of a ...

TL;DR: The American Chemical Society is a healthy, vigorous Society striving always to do a better job at carrying out its stated purposes and objectives.
Abstract: FROM the vantage point of one who has had the honor of serving the AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY for many years, I am glad to use this opportunity to address some remarks about the Society to its more than 75,000 members. It is a healthy, vigorous Society striving always to do a better job at carrying out its stated purposes and objectives. Its health and vigor stem from a variety of sources: (1) The Society has, in recent years at least, kept its organization and methods of operation in tune with the needs of the times. (2) It is a democratic organization responsive to the wishes and needs of its members with good communication among members, local sections, divisions, staff, and officers. (3) It has an efficient, devoted, and able staff of employees. (4) It has prudent business and fiscal management with budget-making, accounting, and budgetary controls consistent with good business practice. During the past 15 ...
