TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the impact of fatigue on seafarers which leads to casualties of human life and property at sea and supported the idea that fatigue plays a detrimental role on seafarer which in turn may impact the normal operation of ships while at sea resulting thus in accidents.
Abstract: The international studies on maritime accidents have shown that fatigue is continuing to be either the main cause or a contributory factor in a considerable number of casualties at sea resulting in the loss of life and damage to the environment and property. In fact, fatigue's detrimental role toward performance at work is leading to errors being made and consequently resulting in fatalities. In light of these considerations, the fatigue issue is of great importance to seafarers, the shipping industry and to the international maritime organizations. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of fatigue on seafarers which leads to casualties of human life and property at sea. In this regard, the authors support the idea that indeed fatigue plays a detrimental role on seafarers which in turn may impact the normal operation of ships while at sea resulting thus in accidents.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present three case studies of implementing Lean in UK and USA universities that can be useful examples for implementing lean in any university environment, by minimizing waste and creating more value for customers with fewer resources.
Abstract: Lean means creating more value for customers with fewer resources, by minimizing waste. Although traditionally this concept is applied in manufacturing, the Lean management improvement principles can be also applied in the case of educational institutions. This paper presents three case studies of implementing Lean in UK and USA universities that can be useful examples for implementing Lean in any university environment

TL;DR: The review of the IMO International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) as amended in 1995/97 reached its climax at the International Diplomatic Conference held in Manila in late June, 2010 when the amendments were adopted as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The review of the IMO International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) as amended in 1995/97 reached its climax at the International Diplomatic Conference held in Manila in late June, 2010 when the amendments were adopted. The result of that process, which had been on-going since 2006, will have a significant impact on Maritime Education and Training in general, and explicitly in the context of English for Specific Purposes, as the “new” convention entered into force already at the start of 2012. Although the fundamental principles of the 1995 edition were retained, many regulations have been tightened and new areas included; with the outcome that the new edition reflects the higher standards to be met in the field of Maritime Education and Training (MET) in general, and in Maritime English communication competency, and thus on Maritime English instruction and research, in particular. With regard to Maritime English this paper observes IMO’s decision-making process, identifies and comments on the new provisions in the Convention and the existing provisions that have been invested with a stricter and higher degree of commitment, and gives selected examples demonstrating the impact of the revised STCW Convention upon Maritime English course design, material development and instruction.

TL;DR: The importance of regions and geographic proximity as important units of economic activity was highlighted by as discussed by the authors, who pointed out that much of the innovative activity is less associated with footloose multinational corporations and more associated with high-tech innovative regional clusters such as Silicon Valley, Research Triangle, and Route 128.
Abstract: Globalization and the telecommunications revolution have brought to developments that were largely unanticipated. The first is the reemergence of the importance of regions and geographic proximity as important units of economic activity. That innovative activity has become more important is not surprising. What was perhaps less anticipated is that much of the innovative activity is less associated with footloose multinational corporations and more associated with high-tech innovative regional clusters, such as Silicon Valley, Research Triangle, and Route 128. Only a few years ago the conventional wisdom predicted that globalization would render the demise of the region as a meaningful unit of economic analysis.
