Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In earthworks, such as in the construction of a highway, it is prohibitively expensive to remove large volumes of unsatisfactory soils and replace them with more suitable material, particularly if it is to be imported.

69 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a durable gypsum binder based on calcined phosphogypsum, fly-ash/granulated blast-furnace-slag and Portland cement was proposed.

29 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of moisture ingress on adhesively bonded joints were evaluated via stress relaxation and fracture analysis via stress-relaxation results show that some adhesives can retain about half their "dry" strengths at equilibrium moisture strain, whereas the fracture toughness analysis suggests that ductility decreases with increased duration of exposure.

22 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the importance of the development and utilization of an internationally accepted systematic approach to the durability problem in building design, and the development of computerized expert systems to support designers with decision-making information.

18 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the first trial installations of cathodic protection have been successfully commissioned in Richards Bay, South Africa, where the first trials were conducted in coastal areas of South Africa.

14 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the possibility of recycling the waste as a fine aggregate in the road construction industry, and the results confirmed that copper grit waste can be utilized as a substitute for normal send in asphalt mixes used in Bahrain.

12 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a method of approaching durable material selection is described, which aims to assure the building designer that the chosen material will provide satisfactory durability at low cost during the design life of the building by developing a theoretical basis for a computerized system for improving the processes of material selection.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A self-boring pressure meter has been successfully used in excess of two hundred metres below ground level as discussed by the authors, where it has been used in a variety of very stiff clays, very dense sands, weak rocks and moderately strong arenaceous rocks.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined causes of falsework failures, review existing codes and national standards as they affect safety in construction, discuss factors to be considered in the analysis, and summarize several construction procedures used in practice.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the analysis of a geosynthetic reinforced soil wall by the limit equilibrium method is considered and the minimum value of the ratio of the height of the wall to the length of reinforcement has been obtained in terms of slopes of the failure planes.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the principal damage identified so far is that generated during compaction of the surrounding soil, and tests have been performed using a variety of geotextiles and backfills to establish the extent of this damage, and to determine the reductions in strength and appropriate safety factors.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reviewed some major developments over the last 10-20 years and those that are likely to occur in the near future and showed that cold formed steel has been used extensively as secondary elements in building frames such as purlins, cladding, intels, etc.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the construction industry is one of the major consumers of polymers and a significant potential customer for recycled plastics products, and the growing problems with municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal space, the proliferation of polymer products and public awareness of environmental issues makes it necessary for the industry to become actively involved in post-consumer polymer recycling efforts.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, thermal conductivity data were obtained by using a boil-off calorimeter, showing that the apparent thermal conductivities of evacuated perlite increases strongly with applied load.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the cashew nutshell liquid obtained from a natural product waste as a thick black phenolic compound has been converted into a water-reducing agent and the results obtained on its effectiveness in influencing the rheological properties of flow, viscosity, particle size distribution, etc.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a practical system that deliberately introduces flexibility to the first storey of structures is described, which utilizes Teflon sliders to carry a portion of the superstructure.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A summary of quality criteria for the design of timber structures is presented in this paper, focusing on a discussion of general design considerations which have developed over many years of research and practice and brief outlines are presented of on-going practical research work which will hopefully aid in the realization of quality timber structures in the future.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the estimated deterioration factors of solar UV energy, wetness time/wet-dry cycle, thermal degradation and daily temperature difference are shown on maps of Japan.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors consider some important aspects of the extended use of timber framed construction for residential hotel buildings, with application to a range of commercial buildings of up to five storeys.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a series of full-scale tests were conducted to examine the influence of brick strength, mortar grade and shear span/effective depth ratio on the ultimate load behaviour of prestressed brickwork beams.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a semi-rigid gravity wall of novel design, incorporating mainly local materials and the use of hand labour for its construction, was constructed for landslide toe support in Nepal, where funds and expertise for sophisticated structures are generally not available.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the vertical geocomposite (jute and coir) drain may be used to accelerate the settlement of soil thereby making the site available for use in the shortest time.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors give an introduction to external plate bonding, its historical background, the range of uses for structural strengthening and guidance as to application procedures to be followed.
