TL;DR: The FTIR vibrational spectroscopy is presented, without claiming to cover entire field, for the characterization of diamond, amorphous carbon, graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes, fullerene and carbon quantum dots.
Abstract: Fourier transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a versatile technique for the characterization of materials belonging to the carbon family. Based on the interaction of the IR radiation with matter this technique may be used for the identification and characterization of chemical structures. Most important features of this method are: non-destructive, real-time measurement and relatively easy to use. Carbon basis for all living systems has found numerous industrial applications from carbon coatings (i.e. amorphous and nanocrystalline carbon films: diamond-like carbon (DLC) films) to nanostructured materials (fullerenes, nanotubes, graphene) and carbon materials at nanoscale or carbon dots (CDots). In this paper, we present the FTIR vibrational spectroscopy for the characterization of diamond, amorphous carbon, graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), fullerene and carbon quantum dots (CQDs), without claiming to cover entire field.

TL;DR: This paper discusses the uses of the correlation coefficient r, either as a way to infer correlation, or to test linearity, and recommends the use of z Fisher transformation instead of r values because r is not normally distributed but z is (at least in approximation).
Abstract: Correlation and regression are different, but not mutually exclusive, techniques. Roughly, regression is used for prediction (which does not extrapolate beyond the data used in the analysis) whereas correlation is used to determine the degree of association. There situations in which the x variable is not fixed or readily chosen by the experimenter, but instead is a random covariate to the y variable. This paper shows the relationships between the coefficient of determination, the multiple correlation coefficient, the covariance, the correlation coefficient and the coefficient of alienation, for the case of two related variables x and y. It discusses the uses of the correlation coefficient r, either as a way to infer correlation, or to test linearity. A number of graphical examples are provided as well as examples of actual chemical applications. The paper recommends the use of z Fisher transformation instead of r values because r is not normally distributed but z is (at least in approximation). For eithe...

TL;DR: In this article, the phase separation behavior of some surfactant micelle solutions as a means for extractive separation is outlined and described, and the potential use of affinity ligands in conjunction with the cloud-point approach for selective bioextraction is also mentioned.
Abstract: The general concept of using the unique phase separation behavior of some surfactant micelle solutions as a means for extractive separation is outlined and described. Next, the specific micellar parameters and phase separation behavior of nonionic and zwitterionic charge-type surfactant solutions are summarized. In addition, the phase behavior of some derivatized B-cyclodextrin solutions is briefly described. The specific applications of such systems and their phase behavior for the extractive preconcentration, separation, and/or purification of metal chelates, biomaterials, and organic compounds are summarized and discussed. The potential use of affinity ligands in conjunction with the cloud-point approach for selective bioextractions is also mentioned. The experimental protocols, advantages, and limitations of the different cloud-point extraction techniques are outlined. The use of zwitterionic as opposed to nonionic surfactant media in such separations is compared and contrasted. In addition, ...

TL;DR: This work is mainly oriented to give an overview of the progress of multivariate curve resolution methods in the last 5 years with the latest trends in theoretical contributions and in the field of analytical applications.
Abstract: This work is mainly oriented to give an overview of the progress of multivariate curve resolution methods in the last 5 years. Conceived as a review that combines theory and practice, it will present the basics needed to understand what is the use, prospects and limitations of this family of chemometric methods with the latest trends in theoretical contributions and in the field of analytical applications.

TL;DR: An overview of potentiometric sensors that are capable of detecting toxic heavy metal ions in environmental samples is presented and discussed and several limitations do exist in terms of selectivity, limits of detection, dynamic ranges, applicability to specific problems, and reversibility.
Abstract: An overview of potentiometric sensors that are capable of detecting toxic heavy metal ions in environmental samples is presented and discussed. Notwithstanding the tremendous work performed so far,...
