TL;DR: Some of the principles of vitrification are reviewed, the current state of the art is described, how a practical vitrification scheme might work, and how the principles relate to and illuminate the principles and practices of freezing are noted.

TL;DR: A prime need in cryosurgery research is related to the periphery of the cryosurgical lesion where some cells die and others live, and adjunctive therapy should influence the fate of cells in this region and increase the efficacy of cryos surgical techniques.

TL;DR: Pairwise comparisons of the cryoprotective activity of the more common CPAs used in cryomicrobiology indicate that the most successful CPAs have been Me2SO, methanol, ethylene glycol, propylene glyCol, and serum or serum albumin, while glycerol, polyethylene gly col, PVP, and sucrose are less successful, and other sugars are the least effective.

TL;DR: It is proposed that the cryoprotection afforded to isolated proteins by solutes can be accounted for by the fact that these solutes are preferentially excluded from contact with the protein's surface.
