TL;DR: Assessment and promotion of exercise and physical activity may be beneficial in achieving desired benefits across several populations, including diverse ethnic populations, as well as several age groups (e.g. adolescents, middle-aged and older adults).
Abstract: Purpose of reviewThis review highlights recent work evaluating the relationship between exercise, physical activity and physical and mental health. Both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, as well as randomized clinical trials, are included. Special attention is given to physical conditions, i

TL;DR: Although interventions with early incipient disorders might help reduce severity-persistence of primary disorders and prevent secondary disorders, additional research is needed on appropriate treatments forEarly incipient cases and on long-term evaluation of the effects of early intervention on secondary prevention.
Abstract: Purpose of reviewThe aim of this article is to review recent epidemiological research on age-of-onset of mental disorders, focusing on the WHO World Mental Health surveys.Recent findingsMedian and inter-quartile range (IQR; 25th–75th percentiles) of age-of-onset is much earlier for phobias (7–14, IQ

TL;DR: This body of evidence, and the developing consensus regarding biological and behavioral mechanisms, sets the stage for a next era of psychiatric and collaborative interdisciplinary research on pregnancy to reduce the burden of maternal stress, depression, and anxiety in the perinatal period.
Abstract: Purpose of reviewTo briefly review results of the latest research on the contributions of depression, anxiety, and stress exposures in pregnancy to adverse maternal and child outcomes, and to direct attention to new findings on pregnancy anxiety, a potent maternal risk factor.Recent findingsAnxiety,

TL;DR: An upward trend has been observed in the incidence of anorexia nervosa in the past century till the 1970s, and the most substantial increase was among females aged 15–24 years, for whom a significant increase was observed from 1935 to 1999.
Abstract: Purpose of review The purpose of this review is to evaluate the recent literature on the incidence and prevalence of and mortality associated with eating disorders. Recent findings General-practice studies shove that the overall incidence rates of anorexia nervosa remained stable during the 1990s, compared with the 1980s. Some evidence suggests that the occurrence of bulimia nervosa is decreasing. Anorexia nervosa is a common disorder among young white females; but is extremely rare among black females. Recent studies confirm previous findings of the high mortality rate within the anorexia nervosa population. Summary The incidence of anorexia nervosa is around eight per 100 000 persons per year. An upward trend has been observed in the incidence of anorexia nervosa in the past century till the 1970s. The most substantial increase was among females aged 15-24 years, for whom a significant increase was observed from 1935 to 1999. The average prevalence rates for anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa among young females are 0.3 and 1%, respectively. Only a minority of people with eating disorders, especially with bulimia nervosa, are treated in mental healthcare.

TL;DR: Current findings often show a robust relationship in which social and emotional support from others can be protective for health, however, the next generation of studies must explain why this relationship exists and the specificity of such links.
Abstract: During the last 30 years, researchers have shown greatinterestinthephenomenonofsocialsupport, particularlyin the context of health. Prior work has found that thosewith high quantity or quality of social networks have adecreased risk of mortality in comparison with thosewho have low quantity or quality of social relationships, even after statistically controlling for baseline healthstatus [1]. In fact, social isolation itself was identifiedasanindependentmajorriskfactorforall-causemortality[2]. Current research has focused on expanding severalareas of knowledge in this field. These include social-support influences on morbidity, mortality, and qualityof life in chronic disease populations, understandingthe mechanisms responsible for such associations, andhow we might apply such findings to design relevantinterventions. It is important to note that social support in these studiesisoperationalizedinseveraldifferentways.Mostbroadly, support can be conceptualized in terms of the structuralcomponents(e.g.socialintegration:being apartofdiffer-ent networks and participating socially [3 ]) and thefunctional components (e.g. different types of trans-actions between individuals, such as emotional supportor favors [4 ]). How the functional components aremeasured often varies between studies; transactionsmay be summarized by actual support received (oftenascertained by asking the support providers [5 ]),perceived support received or available [6 ], or thediscrepancy between perceived support and receivedsupport [7 ]. Support is often further broken down intodifferent types—for instance, instrumental support andemotional support—as people often have preferences fordifferent types of aid depending on the circumstances. This diversity of ways in which support is defined isimportant and can provide greater specificity (context) toresearch findings.
