TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed 93 program and module specification documents for 34 UX, and UX related, degree courses and 50 job adverts for UX designers in the UK and concluded that UX, within formal education, is narrowly reliant on already established subjects and yet to mature into a holistic discipline.
Abstract: With the recent growth in demand for skilled user experience (UX) practitioners, there has been a significant expansion of higher education UX degree courses. Yet, despite increasing educational provision, UX design industry figures criticise UX degree courses for not meeting industry’s needs. To examine the issue, this study asks: (1) What competencies are specified by UX degree courses? (2) How do UX and UX related degree courses’ competencies and employers’ requirements align? To answer these questions, the researchers analysed 93 programme and module specification documents for 34 UX, and UX related, degree courses and 50 job adverts for UX designers in the UK. The study concludes that UX, within formal education, is narrowly reliant on already established subjects and yet to mature into a holistic discipline. UX curricula are also developing in diverse ways across different institutions. Finally, the findings reveal that industry and academia have different priorities. The study underscores the need for further research into UX practice and pedagogy, cross-institutional cooperation, and enhanced connections with the communities of UX practice.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore manufacturing incubators in Botswana and UK makerspaces as local entrepreneurial ecosystems, comparing a developing and an industrialized context, using a qualitative approach to evoke inductive means of constructing and interpreting ecosystem data.
Abstract: Entrepreneurs form complex ecosystems which are challenging to understand, especially for those with limited capabilities. In pursuit of understanding ecosystems, this research explores manufacturing incubators in Botswana and UK makerspaces as local entrepreneurial ecosystems, comparing a developing and an industrialized context. This doctoral research uses a qualitative approach to evoke inductive means of constructing and interpreting ecosystem data. Semi-structured interviews and visualization techniques are used concurrently to engage entrepreneurs, exploring mechanisms that shape local ecosystems. From the analysis of the findings, the research proposes a ‘Jigsaw’ framework and evaluates these using co-design workshops with SMEs, policymakers, and researchers. The research outputs suggest that the ‘Jigsaw’ is effective in helping actors to convene, visualize, understand, and act upon opportunities for entrepreneurship.

TL;DR: Insight from expert interviews concerning prototyping and entrepreneurship are presented, along with the formulation of the foundations of a novel prototyping support tool, tailored for entrepreneurs, are presented.
Abstract: The complexities and unique requirements of entrepreneurship and commercialization require novel prototyping approaches that go beyond their traditional application in engineering design. Prototyping, as a key part of Design Thinking, can address these requirements by focusing on creative problem-solving and by supporting entrepreneurs' reasoning. The broader requirements of entrepreneurship are not explicitly addressed in existing prototyping tools and instances of inefficient prototyping are still observed in entrepreneurial settings. This paper presents insights from expert interviews concerning prototyping and entrepreneurship, along with the formulation of the foundations of a novel prototyping support tool, tailored for entrepreneurs. Prototyping's approaches and challenges, user-prototype interactions, and prototypes' role in funding attraction are among the discussed themes.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss how design can have different meanings and uses in practice and what of those are related to innovation processes and identify some of the difficulties companies experience in measuring the value and contributions of design, and illustrate alternative methods companies use for that purpose.
Abstract: In this paper we discuss how design can have different meanings and uses in practice and what of those are related to innovation processes. The paper looks at diverse theoretical stances in regard to the meaning of design. Later on, the paper describes data collected through in-depth interviews with fifteen UK companies in the manufacturing, engineering, transport, urban living and digital services areas. The findings inform our understanding about definitions and uses of design. In addition, we identify some of the difficulties companies experience in measuring the value and contributions of design, and illustrate alternative methods companies use for that purpose. The paper concludes with a synthesis of the findings from this research.
