Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the dry matter and water content of nine spring wheat cultivars and two breeding lines were determined at 2-to-7-day intervals throughout grain filling, and the experiment was performed to investigate the quantitative relationship between the relative dry matter content of grains and the state of dry matter accumulation and test the hypothesis that final grain weight is closely related to maximum grain water content, which is determined early in grain development.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Averaging over seasons, it was not possible to compensate for the detrimental influences of the preceding wheat crop on the grain yield of the subsequent wheat by increasing the amount of nitrogen fertilization from 210 kg N ha -1 to 250 kg NHa -1 .

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: It is argued that a reflectance measurement ( WDVI ) itself may be more appropriate than ground cover or LAI to quantify interception of solar radiation by a crop canopy.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the accumulation of above ground and root biomass of a lucerne crop was studied after seeding in spring and during two consecutive regrowth periods in summer and in autumn.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the relationship between nitrogen fertilizer rates and nitrogen uptake was found to be weak (r 2 = 0.36) and the coefficient of determination for the nitrogen uptake by the crop was improved to 73% if, in addition to the N fertilizer rate, the inorganic N (NH 3 − + NH 4 + ) present in the soil profile (0-90 cm) in spring was included in a multiple regression.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The results demonstrated that the source-sink relationships were modified ; far-red plants partitioned more 14 C-assimilates to petioles and leaves than did control plants, at the expense of stolons and roots.

Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: Results suggest that a combination of short VGP and long GFP may produce higher grain yield in wheat, and significant positive correlations of GFP and PGFP with GRY and BMY suggested that selection for long G FP will lead to improved yields.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The yield and the protein content of forage from a maize-soybean intercrop and from the two sole crops at two levels of nitrogen fertilization and at three different population den sities of soybean was evaluated in north-east Italy during 1990 and 1991.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the relative importance of genotypic variability in grain protein content may be affected not only by physiological traits but also by N supply in the soil, and the extent of variation in grain N content was generally more strongly related to N uptake than to N translocation.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of P buffer, power and soil-test P, as determined by electro-ultrafiltration, extraction with a mixture of calcium lac tate + calcium acetate + acetic acid at pH 4.1, and desorbable P, on P uptake by rye ( Secale cereale L.) from eight widely differing central European soils.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a crop model to evaluate land suitability is described, which uses readily available input data and uses a simple growth model for the maize crop, which is incorporated within procedures that allow the descrip tion of crop environment variability both in space and time.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The objective of this work was to quantify the effects of reduced radiation intensity during different phenological stages on the growth, dry matter partitioning and grain numbers of sunflower.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the isotopic exchange kinetics procedure was used to study the phosphate buffering capacity of 89 soil samples from Lorraine in north-eastern France, and the ratio of the total radioactivity introduced into a soil solution system at a steady state to the radioactivity remaining in solution after one minute of exchange (R/r 1 ) was shown to be a precise measure of PBC.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the cold hardiness of winter wheats was analyzed for soluble sugars and membrane lipids during a cold acclimation period of 30 days at + 2 °C, followed by a dehardening period of 4 days at 20 °C.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: An expo-linear equation, which combines the relative growth rate (RGR) and the growth rates (GR), showed significant cultivar differences for these parameters, which indicates that cultivars having a low RGR just after emergence compensate later on by having a higher GR.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: It is concluded that line 6 showed more resistance to water shortage, since it was affected later and recovered faster than line 43 during the drying and rewatering process, and also because its production was not reduced so much.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of straw incorporation, with or without the application of increasing doses of nitrogen (50-100-150 kg ha -1 ) and 500 m 3 ha −1 of water, on the yield and quality of durum wheat under continuous cropping were investigated.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The results do not support a clear causal relationship between genetically- and/or environmentally-induced variations in endosperm ABA concentrations and endOSperm cell number or weight or grain growth rates.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: It was concluded that sowing non-legumes into faba beans can provide a means of reducing soil nitrate content in autumn.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The reaction to stress indicates that furocoumarins are phytoalexin compounds in P. cinerea, which could become a useful furoCoumarin source for supplying pharmaceutical demand.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Crop growth, dry matter partitioning, leaf area development, light interception and dry matter : radiation quotient in chicory were studied in field and glasshouse trials and the prospects for breeding improved genotypes are discussed.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a pot experiment with two typical paddy soils from the province Zhejiang (People's Republic of China) the fixation of NH 4 + by clay minerals after incorporation of farmyard manure (FYM) and the utilization of non-exchangeable NH 4 -N by plants was investigated.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the leaf azimuths of a maize crop were recorded in a growth room to avoid the impact of solar path and of wind effects on the leaf orientation.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: It is suggested that the seeding date of wheat be delayed until end of October, especially after a previous wheat crop, to avoid early take-all infection resulting in heavy yield losses.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Results strongly support the view that the Rht alleles per se have no effect on grain yield, and the possibility of selecting for long coleoptiles within the semi-dwarf genotype.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Nitrogenase activity improvement affected seed yield more than seed protein content, and simultaneous selection for the two traits should be effective, as the nodulation parameters alone, although they were more readily measured than nitrogenase activity, were less efficient for yield prediction.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a regression equation for the lime requirement comprised the variables: Ca 2+ extracted, water flow through the anode filter of the first (200 V, 20 °C, 30 min).

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of long-term no-tillage and ploughing on the distribution and leaching of mineral nitrogen was studied on two different arable soils, a Luvic Phaeozem derived from loess and an Eutric Cambisol.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: It was concluded that at low plant populations high tillering increased standing ability by giving a more even distribution of forces within the canopy and hence minimizing the displacement of individual plants under the influence of self-weight.
