TL;DR: In 2019, China imposed a new National Security Law on its Special Administrative Region (SAR) of Hong Kong in mid-2020 as mentioned in this paper and the deployment of this legal weapon combined with other actions of local authorities that have grown noticeably more irritable and vindictive means that Hong Kong media no longer enjoy the freedom from government restrictions that they had been accustomed to.
Abstract: China imposed a new National Security Law on its Special Administrative Region (SAR) of Hong Kong in mid-2020. The deployment of this legal weapon, combined with other actions of local authorities that have grown noticeably more irritable and vindictive, means that Hong Kong media no longer enjoy the freedom from government restrictions that they had been accustomed to. Hong Kong has thus joined the ranks of the many societies with media environments that are semifree and semi-closed. These societies’ experiences indicate that arrests and bans, while attracting the most attention, are not what inflict the most damage in the long run. As alarming as the on-going legal actions are, citizens’ access to information and ideas is more likely to be restricted by less spectacular and coercive means, including economic carrots and sticks that encourage a culture of self-censorship. Such an environment requires new mindsets and skillsets among journalists.

TL;DR: The authors examined the discursive forms of the externalization of xenophobia and racism from Peruvian internet users towards Venezuelan immigrants residing in Peru through Twitter, as well as responses to xenophobic and racist discourses that immigrant Internet users or other Peruvian Internet users externalize.
Abstract: This research aims to examine the discursive forms of the externalization of xenophobia and racism from Peruvian internet users towards Venezuelan immigrants residing in Peru through Twitter, as well as responses to xenophobic and racist discourses that immigrant Internet users or other Peruvian Internet users externalize. To carry out this purpose, web-scraping algorithms written in the R language were used. Also, the large amount of information collected allowed the analysis to be divided into two stages, first a quantitative stage (descriptive analysis) and secondly a qualitative stage (content analysis). Results indicate that xenophobia and racism affect the immigrant female population differently from the total immigrant population. In addition, xenophobia and racism were found to follow two directions, from Peruvian Internet users to immigrants and from immigrant Internet users to Peruvians. In conclusion, possible lines of investigation are outlined that could arise from this pioneer analysis of xenophobia and racism in Peru.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a theoretical framework to conceptualize COVID-19 stories from the margins, and apply it to a map of five problems (counting in the pandemic; new inequalities and vulnerabilities; datafied social protection; data injustices; solidarity and re-sistance from below).
Abstract: Voicing systematically marginalised communities is a problem historically posed in the media and communications field, in terms of de-Westernisation and, more radically, cosmopolitan-ism. Such a problem has been magnified in the COVID-19 pandemic, with narratives from systemat-ically devoiced communities – ranging from migrants to informal workers, ethnic minorities, eco-nomically poor people, and survivors of domestic violence – remaining untold. Recognising the need for a conceptual apparatus to voice the silenced narratives of the pandemic, this paper conducts two tasks: first, it crafts a theoretical apparatus of three devices (data at the margins; data poverty; and the datafication of anti-poverty programmes) to conceptualise COVID-19 stories from the margins. Second, it applies such a theoretical apparatus to a map of five problems (counting in the pandemic; new inequalities and vulnerabilities; datafied social protection; data injustices; solidarity and re-sistance from below) opened by discussion on COVID-19 from the margins. By doing so it offers a conceptual lens responding to the call for cosmopolitanism in media and communications, applying it to the study of COVID-19 narrations from the globe.

TL;DR: In this article, the twenty biggest "victories" in the history of the private platform Change.org are examined in four countries: United States, United Kingdom, France and Australia.
Abstract: Popular movements took a renewed momentum with the consolidation of new technologies and the emergence of public and private online platforms, which serve as a channel for social protests and the defense of civic interests. From a qualitative content analysis, the twenty biggest "victories" in the history of the private platform Change.org are examined in four countries: United States, United Kingdom, France and Australia. It is observed how these campaigns operate, and the interests that have motivated the participation of their digital community are identified. Despite the fact that the impact of online political participation is an issue that it is still on debate in the scientific literature, the results show similarities in the type of interests that are defended transnationally on Change.org, and suggest that thereo would be requests outside the strictly political field that mobilize citizens in a transversal way.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors study the phenomenon of social tagging known as hashtag activism as drivers of civic participation, answering the question: How to understand online civic participation through social tagging in socio-digital networks?
Abstract: One of the functions of Twitter is the digital tagging called: the hashtag. Through tags, it orders and classifies messages on this social networking platform. This research aims to study the phenomenon of social tagging known as hashtag activism as drivers of civic participation, answering the question: How to understand online civic participation through social tagging in socio-digital networks? Our methodology makes a qualitative analysis of 33 representative cases of #Ladies and #Lords tags used in Mexico that perform social scrutiny since 2011. We conclude that digital tagging impacts civic participation and communication in the information society.

TL;DR: In this paper, a set of semi-structured interviews with active journalists located in the 23 most dangerous states of Mexico was used to analyze their perceptions on the adverse conditions under which they work on a daily basis.
Abstract: Aggressions against the press are not limited to assassinations, beatings, or kidnappings. On the contrary, in countries such as Mexico, media staff face increasing risks like threats, smear campaigns, or digital espionage. Despite the diversity of assaults, labour precariousness as a form of violence against journalists has not been sufficiently studied. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to analyse Mexican news workers’ perceptions on the adverse conditions under which they work on a daily basis. Drawing on a set of semi-structured interviews with active journalists located in the 23 most dangerous states of the country, the findings indicate that their precarious labour conditions hinder their journalistic duties, which are fostering elite groups accountability, and citizens’ right to know. In addition, the origin of this situation can be found in the organizations they work for, whose owners privilege their own economic interests over those strictly journalistic.

TL;DR: The authors examines narrative discourses of the Syrian loyalist TV channel Sama TV in the light of Syria's current armed conflict, demography, and regional geopolitics, focusing on the tense relationship between secularism and religious representations on the channel.
Abstract: This paper examines narrative discourses of the Syrian loyalist TV channel Sama TV in the light of Syria’s current armed conflict, demography, and regional geopolitics. The focus is on the tense relationship between secularism and religious representations on the channel. Compared to state television, private channel Sama TV has more room for maneuver to embrace a new form of religious presence that challenges the ideological secularism of the Syrian nation state. The national “mythscapes” of Syria, simultaneously a secular and (Sunni) Muslim nation, characterized by a certain ambiguity, are consequently reinforced.

TL;DR: In this paper, the role of the plastic components of popular advertising in commercial interactions in visual pollution spaces in the center of Lima, Peru is analyzed through qualitative techniques, and a semiotic analysis is developed on graphic material collected in the Lima shopping center with the purpose of identifying its role in the commercial interactions that are based on visual contamination spaces.
Abstract: The main objective of this work is to analyze the role of the plastic components of popular advertising in commercial interactions in visual pollution spaces in the center of Lima, Peru. Therefore, through qualitative techniques, a semiotic analysis is developed on graphic material collected in the Lima shopping center (Avenida Wilson, Cercado de Lima, Peru) with the purpose of identifying its role in the commercial interactions that are based on visual contamination spaces. The results show a cooperative functionality of popular advertising with the course of commercial interactions through an excessive graphic use (chromatically, eidetic and topologically) of the plastic and figurative dimension that, rather than representing abstract realities or meanings, seeks to attract, retain, anchor the economic walk (accelerated and fleeting) in the public space.

TL;DR: In this article, a content analysis was conducted of the then-candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador's posts on his Facebook profile, and the interactions that they promoted, showing that the users constantly communicated among themselves, especially for expressing their support or rejection to the candidate, but this interaction did not foster deliberation.
Abstract: Social media have been considered as the new public sphere, in which politicians and users interact in order to propose, debate, and even solve public interest issues. This idea is particularly recurrent during electoral campaigns, because it is assumed that citizens and candidates strengthen ties when they exchange points of view related to public policies proposals. Therefore, the aim of this article is to analyze online communication and deliberation processes developed during the 2018 electoral period in Mexico. In doing so, a content analysis was conducted of the then-candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s posts on his Facebook profile, and the interactions that they promoted. The results indicate that the users constantly communicated among themselves, especially for expressing their support or rejection to the candidate, but this interaction did not foster deliberation.

TL;DR: This article examined the negative correlation between Facebook intergroup contact variables: number of Muslim Facebook friends, number of non-Muslim friends who have Muslim friends on Facebook (extended contact), and frequency of Facebook Intergroup activities (direct communication, passive communication, and broadcasting) and Islamophobia.
Abstract: Through an online survey of non-Muslim Facebook users in the United States (N=415), intergroup contact theory was used to examine the negative correlation between Facebook intergroup contact variables: Number of Muslim Facebook friends, number of non-Muslim friends who have Muslim friends on Facebook (extended contact), and frequency of Facebook intergroup activities (direct communication, passive communication, and broadcasting) and Islamophobia. Contact theory and hyperpersonal model of CMC were used to examine the influence of interpersonal communication with a Muslim on Facebook (N=250) as a moderator (low, average, and high attraction toward a Muslim) in intergroup contact effects. Results showed all Facebook intergroup contact variables have significant negative correlations with Islamophobia. Of Facebook intergroup activities, only passive communication predicts reduced Islamophobia. The study also found interpersonal attraction on Facebook moderates the negative relation between Facebook intergroup activities direct and passive communications, but not broadcasting and Islamophobia.

TL;DR: In this paper, a case study of the 5Pillars media coverage of the attack on the Manchester arena in May 2017 is presented, where the authors examine the increasing role and impact of ethnic media as a challenger to the mainstream media and ask significant questions including: Can Muslim media ownership makes their representation better? And is the media really that powerful that it causes harm to the reputation of Muslims worldwide?
Abstract: For a long time now, the media representations of British Muslims, in particular, are the central focus of academic studies. Especially, the terror attacks often receive bias coverage that connects Islam as a faith to such incidents. Notably, the attack on the Manchester arena in May 2017 by an ISIS recruit by the name of Salman Abedi shocked the nation. In the aftermath of the crisis, UK and Western media dominated national and international press coverage. However, little attention was given and received in relation to the coverage provided by British Muslim media by 5Pillars. This article aims to provide a case study of the 5Pillars media coverage of the attack on the Manchester arena in May 2017. Also, it examines the increasing role and impact of ethnic media as a challenger to the mainstream media. Furthermore, it asks significant questions including: Can Muslim media ownership makes their representation better? And is the media really that powerful that it causes harm to the reputation of Muslims worldwide? It proposes to establish alternative news media platforms alongside the mainstream media that dominate news and often either misrepresents or underrepresents the British Muslims.

TL;DR: This paper examined print media coverage of xenophobic related behaviours and its possibility to incite xenophobic violence in South Africa considering the fact that the press has had accusations of publishing unbalanced and inconsistent stories about xenophobic-related violence.
Abstract: This paper examines print media coverage of xenophobicrelated behaviours and its possibility to incite xenophobic violence in South Africa considering the fact that the press has had accusations of publishing unbalanced and inconsistent stories about xenophobic-related violence. The method adopted was textual analysis of the selected South African newspapers’ headlines. Thus, this paper has made use of headlines from the Daily Dispatch, The Citizen, Sunday Times, Business Daily, and Independent Online news (IOL), between the period of May 2008 to August 2018. Interestingly, most of the selected newspapers in this paper have published vastly during this period, and they have been accused of misrepresentation, biasness, unbalanced reportage mostly on xenophobic-related violence. The findings of this paper revealed that these headlines are capable to putting readers on the edge and thus incite xenophobic violence across the country. In an attempt to discourage xenophobic behaviours, this paper has therefore recommended peace journalism and Ubuntu journalism as alternative models for reporting xenophobic violence and conflict.

TL;DR: In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, international organizations and researchers denounced that the spread of false news about the disease and its struggle had epidemic effects itself as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, international organizations and researchers denounced that the spread of “false” news about the disease and its struggle had epidemic effects itself. This discovery triggered the suggestion that the news and communication networks which provide sensitive information about the health crisis could be considered as public goods, with the aim of counteracting the so-called “infodemic”. In this article we are going to critically analyze this suggestion, based on a normative evaluation of the role of the media in the Argentine case, and carrying out a public opinion survey on the performance of the media and other actors. During the pandemic, the results of which are presented. In the conclusion, I identify a tension between the claims of global standardized information and the functions of the media within the national framework of democracies, which is expressed both in the conceptual analysis and in the evaluations of the public.

Abstract: The Indian film and entertainment industry has shown a shift from conventional TV and big screen to Over-the-top media platforms. These platforms provide ease of access to stream anytime anywhere over the internet. With this study the researcher explored the remarkable evolution of these OTT platforms in India. To critically examine the study, the reasons of popularization of these platforms in Indian audiences were explored. As these platforms also have to face the criticism for showing inappropriate content, the researcher put insight into the regulatory changes made by the Government. The study implied that the evolution of OTT platforms started in 2008 with the launch of BIGFlix. A huge rise in consumer base had shown due to increased internet and smartphone base after 2015. The quality and creative content, youth-oriented population and lockdown due to COVID were the main reason of popularization of OTT platforms. The Government suggested self-classifying of the content and three-Tier mechanism to handle the grievances associated with these media platforms. The researcher adopted exploratory research design to have insights into the study. The secondary data from various news articles, blogs, reports, quality research papers were analyzed.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined how the internet has influenced the practice of journalism in Kano State, Nigeria, focusing on newsgathering, news processing, and news dissemination.
Abstract: Advancements in the use of the internet have substantially permeated the practice of journalism, especially in the realms of newsgathering, news processing, and news dissemination. Despite the availability of research and vast number of literatures on the impacts of the internet on journalism, little or no research exists on the impacts of internet on the practice of journalism in Kano State, Nigeria, focusing on newsgathering, news processing, and news dissemination. Hence, the urge for this research gap to be closed, a situation to led to the carrying of this study. The study had one specific objective as follows: to examine how the internet has influenced the practice of journalism in the areas of (a) news gathering, (b) news processing, and (c) news dissemination in Kano State, Nigeria. Using quantitative research design, specifically survey, with sample of 123 practicing journalists drawn from the population of 800 journalists and staff at the Editorial Department of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) offices in Kano State, questionnaire was used to collect data and analyze using descriptive methods (tables of frequency and percentage). The study found that the internet has affected journalistic practices both positively and negatively in Kano State and has made sourcing news stories easier. However, as poor information can also be easily spread, which would reduce the credibility of journalists, this study recommends that media organizations must fashion out ways to replace and boost their resources which the internet has taken over.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focused on Middle Eastern families, specifically those of Islamic faith, and found that this group of parents were more likely to follow the restrictive style of parental mediation.
Abstract: The prevalence of televisions in the home make parental mediation of television viewing an important topic for researchers to understand. Alongside the increased use of television over the past six decades, three parental television mediation styles have been identified: coviewing, instructive, and restrictive. Previous research on mediation styles has been conducted on Caucasian, African-American, Hispanic, and Asian cultural groups. This research focuses on Middle Eastern families, specifically those of Islamic faith. Researchers were interested in learning which mediation style would be most prevalent amongst the participants, as well as cultural factors that strongly correlated with the types of television mediation and the acculturation patterns found in the parents. Surveys were distributed at community events by a researcher who was a member of the community. Collected data revealed that this group of parents were more likely to follow the restrictive style of parental mediation

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyze the messages issued by Rafael Correa D. (2006-2009-2013) and Lenin Moreno G. (2017), considering three moments of study: electoral campaign, government plan and seizure of power, to later analyze chronologically and qualitatively the offers that managed to crystallize during the presidential power exercise.
Abstract: From 2007 until May 24th, 2021, Ecuador will be governed by a political project called: La Revolucion Ciudadana (Alianza Pais-Listas 35), a political party that has suffered a series of discrepancies and the distancing of President L. Moreno. This article takes the postulates of Discourse Analysis related to semantic structures, composed of lexical complexity, use of superlatives and ideological tendencies to analyze the messages issued by Rafael Correa D. (2006-2009-2013) and Lenin Moreno G. (2017), considering three moments of study: electoral campaign, government plan and seizure of power. It systematizes the presidential promises used in the speech according to the three mentioned moments, to later analyze chronologically and qualitatively the offers that managed to crystallize during the presidential power exercise. There is a progressive change in public discourse due to two variants, the first to ensure permanence in power and the second to justify the crisis in the country, but in any of the cases, it is always connected with the populist discourse. In Rafael Correa's speech, an ideologically defined strategy is identified. Meanwhile Lenin Moreno, tends to improvise, having a interchangeable discourse without well-defined or strategic concepts.

TL;DR: The main cause of transfer of salience from independent media to official media is the confrontation position of the official media facing a system conceived as opposed to it, same which currently disputes the informative hegemony and construction sense in specific public sectors.
Abstract: This article aimed at verifying the existence of transfer of salience from Cuban independent media to the official press, at level of events, attributes and frames. Equally, this paper deal with identifying official media strategies for treating news of the unofficial press agendas. Official and unofficial media were monitored for three months, in order to achieve the objectives mentioned above. Such monitoring allowed to determine which events were coverage by official media after first been published by unofficial media. Transfer of salience was verified at level of event and the substantive dimension of the attributes due to qualitative content analysis. Transfer of salience was neither verified at level of affective dimension or at level of frames. It could be verified that official media used six strategies to address the events of the independent media agendas. Also, it was found that the main cause of transfer of salience from unofficial media to official media is the confrontation position of the official media facing a system conceived as opposed to it, same which currently disputes the informative hegemony and construction sense in specific public sectors.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the elongation of a sand spit offshore of groins using satellite images for the convex shoreline near Cabaruan, located on the bottom of Lingayen Gulf in the Philippines.
Abstract: Elongation of a sand spit offshore of groins was investigated using satellite images for the convex shoreline near Cabaruan located on the bottom of Lingayen Gulf in the Philippines. Similar to the extension of a large-size sand spit offshore of Santo Tomas, a sand spit was formed by the long shore sand transport turning around the tip of groins at Cabaruan owing to high-angle wave instability. The elongation of a sand spit was numerically predicted using the BG model (a model for predicting 3-D beach changes based on Bagnold’s concept). Predicted results were in good agreement with measured changes in sand spit.

TL;DR: In this paper, a study was conducted for correlation with organizational design preferences among graduate education students of the College of Teacher Education-Bambang Campus and found that respondents who were generally female, less than five years in service and mostly specialized in general education displayed organizational preferences which regard leaders to possess roles and functions as authority and conflict management styles.
Abstract: Good organizational design helps communications, productivity, and innovation. It creates an environment where people may work effectively. Among those concerns which they may handle with utmost efficiency is conflicts management which in this study is tested for correlation with organizational design preferences among graduate education students of the College of Teacher Education- Bambang Campus. Tools like profile, organization design preference and conflict management practice questionnaires were used to ascertain the relationship of constructs under investigation. After data analysis using descriptive method of research at 0.05 level of significance, the respondents who were generally female, less than five years in service and mostly specialized in general education displayed organizational preferences which regard leaders to possess roles and functions as authority and conflict management styles which surfaced the emotional maturity of the respondents. Further, the preferences and styles of the respondents vary significantly when grouped according to their specialization but did not yield significant differences when grouped according to their gender and years of service. As a final point, the respondents’ organization design preferences correlate significantly with their conflict management styles.

TL;DR: In this paper, a conceptual framework of political branding in the political market environment of India has been developed, which outlines the conditions under which political players develop attributes such as credibility, personality, associations akin to a corporate brand to achieve branding.
Abstract: What is common between corporate brands and political brands? Can political entities achieve branding on the lines of corporate brands? The current paper develops a conceptual framework of branding in the political market environment of India. The paper outlines the conditions under which political players develop branding attributes such as credibility, personality, associations akin to a corporate brand to achieve branding. It discusses various dimensions of the political market during and beyond elections and also describes how user engagement on social media alters the perception of a political brand. The discussion draws from the social media strategies deployed by the Indian political parties and leaders to win over the voters, the customers of a political market during elections and even gets down to identifying the characteristics of social media posts that seem to impact electoral outcomes. It describes how the political leaders and parties calibrate their social media posts to the response generated by the social media users on social network sites (SNS). The study is aimed at chalking out a conceptual framework of political branding, identifying the key elements of political branding, describing the branding strategies deployed by the political actors, demonstrating the impact of user engagement on political branding and identifying the characteristics of social media posts that contribute to brand perception of political actors. In crux, the study draws from corporate branding theories, political marketing frameworks and behavioral sciences in its attempt to provide a comprehensive definition of political branding and shed light on the political marketing strategies that may have contributed to the branding of political entities.

TL;DR: In this paper, a descriptive, quantitative exploratory study aimed to analyze variables related to purchasing decisions of young Argentines and to analyze the role of several forms of advertising in these processes.
Abstract: This paper summarizes some results of a descriptive, quantitative exploratory study aimed to analyze variables related to purchasing decisions of young Argentines and to analyze the role of several forms of advertising in these processes. Through a self-administered questionnaire, information on trust and motivation of different advertising formats was collected, as well as variables related to consumption habits. The results show that word of mouth is the most reliable and motivating source of information for the young consumers. But its effectiveness is not limited to the offline world, but extends to the Internet in the so-called electronic word of mouth. Consumers are more likely to rely upon the advice and opinions of their peers (even strangers) than in the ads that come directly from the brand through traditional advertising when making a buying decision. This also applies to any pre-purchase advice and brand information which is obtained through such interactions.

Abstract: In Tunisia, as elsewhere in the world, severe forms of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) related to SARS-Covid 19 were observed. In this pandemic period and given the large number of patients, the challenge was how to manage these serious patients from a distance by guiding other practitioners not trained in this cutting-edge care. For example to manage the operation of the ECMO machine, usually reserved for expert and specialized centers in the field. Our department of cardio-vascular surgery in La Rabta teaching hospital of Tunis has tried the experience of management of ECMO implanted in the different intensive care units of Tunis, remotely, using telemedicine and social networks. Thus, a Facebook-Messenger discussion group was created and enabled the management of patients under ECMO via video conferencing in real time involving all stakeholders.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed a sample of heterosexual men profiles on Tinder, in Barcelona, Spain, combining elements of digital ethnography, visual, psychosocial studies, and multimodal discourse.
Abstract: Tinder is a digital space with predefined content and categories for use and interaction. In the presentation of heterosexual profile, the space gives to the binary sex-gender system a central place in the production and reproduction of the discourse of masculinity, which is constructed in a hegemonic and dominant way in Western societies. This model is founded on the privilege and success of the stereotype of the heterosexual white male, who has who has broad economic and social mobility in the contemporary public sphere. This article is the result and analysis of a sample of heterosexual men profiles on Tinder, in Barcelona, Spain. For this we combine elements of digital ethnography, visual, psychosocial studies, and multimodal discourse. In the digital avatar of presentation, heterosexual men show how the representation of that sexual preference is performed and self-represented, producing content closely related to discourses and configurations of gender and masculinity, widely revived, reaffirmed and produced in media and digital communication in this time.
