Abstract: Sur le roman medieval et la facon dont l'histoire litteraire et la critique en ont tenu compte. Influence du roman francais, dont on trouve tres souvent des adaptations ou des traductions. Raisons qui expliquent pourquoi le roman, en tant que genre, a ete assez neglige: linguistiques et psychologiques| absence virtuelle du terme "roman" au Moyen Age| romanz, romance designent plutot un poeme en langue vernaculaire| les termes employes seront plutot libro, estoria. Cette difficulte terminologique n'est pas totalement resolue par une critique qui a meconnu la tradition generale du roman medieval| un certain nombre d'oeuvres sont passees totalement inapercues, on a trouve a d'autres des qualites qui appartenaient a d'autres genres: on a tres souvent compense cette carence d'attention au roman, en privilegiant des epopees disparues.

Abstract: HE dearth of lyric poems written in Castilian during the Middle Ages has not perplexed scholars, because they have known the reason: a preference for lyrics couched in Galician-Portuguese rather than in the native tongue of the court poets whose works have survived. But this rarity has, nonetheless, given cause for disappointment. The discovery of even one additional poem, then, in Castilian of the thirteenth-century is reason for some surprise and delight. That such a poem could have lain undetected in a book of lyrics as well-known and as much investigated as the Cantigas de Santa Maria of Alfonso X, el Sabio, is surprising indeed, since every one of the four hundred-odd poems, edited by the most careful and scholarly of researchers, is unquestionably in Galician.' How could this have come about? The answer lies in the presence of what I can only term lacunae in scholarship, particularly in editing, as well as in a failure to see, even when edited, the Castilian poem because it had been set down in what appeared to be the lines of a Castilian prose translation of Cantiga X. Long ago scholars had noted that, in the bottom margins of the pages containing miniatures for Cantigas ii through xxv, there appeared prosifications of the poetic content of the miracles illustrated by these miniatures.2 Some of these prosifications which are Castilian renditions of the poems are lengthy and therefore are penned in extremely minute characters, which makes reading difficult and even at times impossible.
