Abstract: , HE eleven stories that comprise Elena Garro's first collection of short narratives, published in 1964 under the title La semana de colores, deserve I to be recognized alongside those of the acknowledged masters of the modern Latin American short story. Not only does Garro capture the essence of Mexican culture in the imaginative blending of contemporary social reality and ancient Indian folklore, but she also brings to her stories a unique female perspective which distinguishes her work from that of Rulfo, Garcia Marquez, Cortizar or Carpentier. In this collection and in later works, Garro focuses on the psychological dimensions of the female experienceof both women and children-and several of her stories are linked by the reappearance of two protagonists, first as youngsters and later as adults, who seem to represent aspects of Garro's own experience without being explicitly autobiographical.'
