TL;DR: In this paper, the three studio ledgers that have been uncovered so far have confirmed many facts about the studio system and challenged many others, including the high level of foreign earnings that each of these studios received and relied upon.
Abstract: Conclusion The three studio ledgers that have been uncovered so far have confirmed many facts about the studio system and challenged many others. The figures certainly will be useful to film historians investigating particular films, stars or genres. The ledgers also point to areas that are in need of further research. Most notably, the high level of foreign earnings that each of these studios received and relied upon necessitates further understanding of Hollywood's relationship with its foreign audiences; and, as Jewell has noted, there is little to explain the fact that foreign earnings held up (and even increased) during World War II [23]. Furthermore, the fact that three ledgers have emerged in the past three years begs the question of how many more exist. Comparison of the MGM, RKO and Warner Bros data indicates that MGM was a particularly lavish and successful studio, but Warner Bros at times challenged MGM's pre-eminence, and for much of its history RKO seems to be in a different league altogether...

TL;DR: Goldman et al. as mentioned in this paper presented a third set of costs and financial information concerning the market performance of films emanating from Warners' studios (including First National traded films between 1929-30 to 1938-39) during the classical Hollywood era.
Abstract: The collection appears to be growing. First we had Glancy (1992) on ‘MGM Film Grosses 1924–1948’ [1], followed by Jewell (1994) on ‘RKO Film Grosses 1929–1951’ [2]. Glancy has now treated us to the details and analysis of a third set of costs and financial information concerning the market performance of films emanating from Warners' studios (including First National traded films between 1929–30 to 1938–39) during the classical Hollywood era. Perhaps we shall soon have a full hand from which to play! The growth in our knowledge in this aspect of film performance is part of a wider and expanding body of work on film as a business: the significance of which is suggested by Jarvie: “Once it was social historians and now it is economic historians who are altering received views’ [3].
