TL;DR: To regard mifepristone simply as an abortifacient with limited uses in the first trimester is to grossly underestimate its useful clinical applications.
Abstract: In France and the UK, mifepristone can now be routinely used, in conjunction with a prostaglandin , to achieve pregnancy termination in the early first trimester. This potent antiprogesterone has become embroiled in the politics of abortion, inevitably leading to a good deal of public controversy and confusion. The development of mifepristone has been described as an advance in reproductive medicine of the same magnitude as the development of the combined oral contraceptive (Birth Control Trust 1990). Others, generally groups opposed to abortion, have roundly criticised the drug on a number of grounds ; that it trivialises abortion, making the procedure 'easier', and that it is teratogenic , ineffective and unsafe. However, to regard mifepristone simply as an abortifacient with limited uses in the first trimester is to grossly underestimate its useful clinical applications.
