TL;DR: This decade is proving to be an era of intense interest in computer-aided geometric design, an activity attracting people from many sectors including computing and manufacturing, and as the discipline more firmly establishes valid principles and standard techniques, it will undoubtedly be of increasing importance in computer -aided manufacturing and a wide range of other applications.
Abstract: Computer-aided geometric design is a subject which involves the representation, specification, design, manipulation, display, and analysis of free-form curves and surfaces. This eclectic field draws on techniques and principles from numerical analysis, approximation theory, computer graphics, interactive computer systems, mechanical and geometric design, and many other areas. Nevertheless, computer-aided geometric design is an endeavor with a character, emphasis, and purpose of its own, combining techniques and principles from other fields with unique approaches that are often somewhat enigmatic and confusing to the novice. Many things sound and seem familiar, yet the directions and motivations are distinct to this discipline. This decade is proving to be an era of intense interest in computer-aided geometric design, an activity attracting people from many sectors including computing and manufacturing. As the discipline more firmly establishes valid principles and standard techniques, it will undoubtedly be of increasing importance in computer-aided manufacturing and a wide range of other applications.

TL;DR: The Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) is providing technical assistance in the implementation of DPMs in several cities, to demonstrate the benefits of such systems.
Abstract: Traffic congestion is a major factor in the deterioration of our downtown urban areas, contributing to the migration of residents and shoppers to the suburbs and the relocation of businesses to more accessible locations. The US Department of Transportation has identified automated guideway transit systems, particularly shuttle-loop systems, as a research and development area that has great potential for solving circulation problems in high-density areas. To develop and evaluate this technology, the Urban Mass Transportation Administration is going forward with a number of programs, such as the Downtown People Mover project. UMTA is providing technical assistance in the implementation of DPMs in several cities, to demonstrate the benefits of such systems.

Abstract: "A Guide to Sources of Information about Computer Graphics," which appeared in the January issue of IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications, generated responses from readers who had valuable comments and additions. And, in a rapidly expanding technology like computer graphics, new material appears constantly. This supplement has been prepared to reflect some of those reader suggestions and to add recently published material. Sections correspond to those used in the original list.

TL;DR: A typical engineering problem is followed and a number of graphical "solutions" are analyzed to show how state-of-the art computer graphics can aid engineers, scientists, and problem solvers.
Abstract: Computer graphics has been used to display engineering and scientific data for a number of years. Early uses included graphing of simple functions or experimental data as an aid to understanding complex models. Significant improvements in graphics system capability have occurred since such early uses. Here, we will follow a typical engineering problem and analyze a number of graphical "solutions" to it, in order to show how state-of-the art computer graphics can aid engineers, scientists, and problem solvers. We will also examine some features that may become available in the future.
