TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provided an empirical evaluation of the impact of infrastructure development on industry level productivity, output, labor productivity and technical efficiency in India over the period 1994 to 2006.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide an empirical evaluation of the impact of infrastructure development on industry‐level productivity, output and efficiency in India over the period 1994‐2006.Design/methodology/approach – The first stage, estimated total factor productivity (TFP) and technical efficiency of eight important industries. In the next stage, the effects of infrastructure were estimated on TFP, output, labor productivity and technical efficiency. Fully modified ordinary least squares procedure was utilized to generate consistent estimates of the relevant panel variables in the cointegrated frameworks.Findings – The results of this study are mixed. On the one hand, TFP, output and technical efficiency appear to be positively and largely affected by infrastructure. On the other hand, the effect of infrastructure on the labor productivity is somewhat negligible. In addition, the effects of information and communication technology on the industrial performance are found to be very we...

TL;DR: In this article, the main determinants of child nutrition in rural Nepal, focusing on the influential role of maternal autonomy, were analyzed using data from the 2006 Nepal Demographic Health Survey (NDHS).
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze the main determinants of child nutrition in rural Nepal, focusing on the influential role of maternal autonomy.Design/methodology/approach – This paper uses data from the 2006 Nepal Demographic Health Survey (NDHS) to estimate econometric models using OLS and logit techniques. The dependent variables are the two anthropometric measures of child weight‐for‐height (a measure of wasting) and height‐for‐age (a measure of stunting).Findings – No evidence was found of gender discrimination against the girl child in either of our nutritional measures. However, our results show that the explanatory variables have differential effects on male and female children. Estimation results show that maternal autonomy variables have a limited influence on child nutrition measures, but household wealth has a large positive impact on child nutrition, both short‐term and long term.Originality/value – The large sample size and the range of questions available in our nationally ...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined whether the differences in performance characteristics are due to the self-selection of better firms into exporting or because the firms that start exporting for some unknown reason experience productivity growth.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study whether exporting firms outperform non‐exporting firms along a number of performance characteristics. It also examines whether the differences in performance characteristics are due to the self‐selection of better firms into exporting or because the firms that start exporting for some unknown reason experience productivity growth.Design/methodology/approach – The dataset comprised a panel of Indian manufacturing firms for a period of 17 years from 1990 to 2006.Findings – Exporters were found to systematically outperform non‐exporters over a number of characteristics. Also, evidence was found of “self‐selection”, that is, firms that are more productive enter the export market. There was some evidence of learning, that is exporting firms experience an increase in productivity.Originality/value – This is the first paper to look at the issue of self‐selection vs learning for exporting firms using a dataset from India.
