Abstract: Pyrolysis of particles in pulverized coal flames was studied by probing one-dimensional flames. The particles attain a temperature of about 1100/sup 0/C before either ignition or a significant amount of pyrolysis occurs. Pyrolysis and heterogeneous combustion occur simultaneously. Volatile matter is lost from particles by both heterogeneous combustion and gaseous evolution. Ignition was found to occur on surfaces of solid particles instead of in gaseous volatiles. 23 references.
