TL;DR: Two fundamentally different approaches to the scalable dissemination of data between vehicles are discussed: using direct communication between cars and compressing the data via aggregation versus relying on infrastructure.
Abstract: Summary This paper investigates the scalable dissemination of data between vehicles. The application context of this work is traffic information systems where cars are not only consumers but also producers of information. The key challenge in those systems is to ensure scalability in an environment where data is provided and requested by all participating vehicles in a large area. We discuss two fundamentally different approaches to this problem: using direct communication between cars and compressing the data via aggregation versus relying on infrastructure. The latter approach can further be divided into client-server and peer-to-peer systems. We outline all three approaches and highlight their advantages and disadvantages.

TL;DR: By means of application examples from the everyday, it is illustrated how a combination of smart items and digital memories allows for realizing innovative support mechanisms, which take into account static knowledge about objects as well as situational observations and historical data.
Abstract: Summary Intelligent assistants need precise knowledge about activity sequences and the habits of their users so as to support them in an adequate manner. The following contribution addresses an approach to user support, which takes advantage of the object centred nature of many day-to-day activities. By means of application examples from the everyday, we illustrate how a combination of smart items and digital memories allows for realizing innovative support mechanisms, which take into account static knowledge about objects as well as situational observations and historical data. Here, we devote special attention to applications originating from the sharing of data gathered this way between users and systems.

TL;DR: This overview paper compares the provision of enterprise solutions using the application service provider (ASP) model and the service-oriented computing approach, whereas the major benefit of services is revealed by their approach.
Abstract: In constantly changing and dynamic markets enterprises are in an even greater need to maintain adequate IT support for their core competencies. This support requires integrating heterogeneous systems and applications that are built using different technologies and infrastructures, which hamper interoperability and seamless integration. The problems are aggravated additionally by the need to cross enterprise boundaries and the necessity to react to changes in that same environment in an ad-hoc manner. Service-oriented computing (SOC) provides a powerful abstraction basically allowing to perceiving all compute resources as entities that can be dynamically discovered and composed. These entities are called services in SOC: a service is exposed for use over a network, and it is always ready for use. Services are described in terms of interfaces specifying service functionality independent of platform technology or programming language used. This renders the service abstraction particularly advantageous when applied for tackling problems due to heterogeneity of IT landscapes. Service oriented architecture (SOA) is the accompanying architectural style. The roles in the SOA are: service provider, service consumers and service registry. Applications compliant with the SOA can be implemented in terms of various technologies and programming languages. Services communicate through messaging and are loosely coupled. The single technology that has been created to implement SOA inherently and from its onset is the Web service technology. It provides an abstract component model for representing and using services. Based on the heterogeneity and interoperability problems to solve, this technology is highly dependent on standardization; it enables reuse of legacy applications and aims at solving integration problems. The Web Service technology defines a stack of composable specification addressing orthogonal concerns that can be easily composed to meet the requirements of various application domains. Web services are the only service-oriented technology that has enjoyed a tremendous success in acceptance by industry and academia. The implication of its composable nature is that the execution infrastructure for service-oriented applications must support that composability of protocols. Web services mainly target machine-to-machine interaction, which is driven by the need to enable high degree of automation. The execution infrastructure for such applications is referred to as (Enterprise) Service Bus (ESB). It is a piece of middleware enabling the application of the concepts of service orientation. The papers in this issue of it give an overview of the most important aspects of SOA from the point of view of both, industry and academia. The paper of Dustdar and Papazoglou provides definitions of what services and composite services are and illustrates the basic principles of service-oriented computing and how they are reflected by the Web service technology. The distinguishing differences between Web services and other programming models are discussed. This overview paper compares the provision of enterprise solutions using the application service provider (ASP) model and the service-oriented computing approach, whereas the major benefit of services is revealed by their

TL;DR: It is shown how a priori knowledge of the broken objects, like mirror symmetries and axes, can be used to reconstruct broken femora and pelvis fractures, which is an important building block for computer-assisted fracture reduction in surgery.
Abstract: Zusammenfassung Das Zusammenfügen von 3D-Objekten aus Einzelteilen (3D-Puzzle-Problem) ist in vielen Bereichen von hoher Relevanz. Summary The reconstruction of 3D fragmented objects (3D-puzzle-problem) is a highly relevant task with many applications. The field of applications comprises archaeology (reconstruction of broken artefacts), surgery (fracture reduction), bioinformatics (proteindocking) and robotics (assemblage of components). This work provides an overview of the approaches and results of the thesis “Das 3D-Puzzle-Problem”, which considers the whole processing chain, starting from data acquisition, the general registration of surfaces, up to special applications. In this context, novel and efficient approaches will be introduced. They automatically assemble fragments without any knowledge of an initial pose and are highly robust against measurement inaccuracies, material deterioration and noise. Furthermore, it is shown how a priori knowledge of the broken objects, like mirror symmetries and axes, can be used to reconstruct broken femora (thigh bones) and pelvis fractures, which is an important building block for computer-assisted fracture reduction in surgery.

Abstract: Ambient Intelligence (AmI) refers to the fact that through technological innovation the environments in which we live and work are becoming more and more intelligent. This is based on the integration of advanced electronics into these environments. People, animals, machines, objects, etc. interact with their environment. This interaction is seamless, trustworthy and natural. The result of this is a completely new set of products (handheld devices, displays, wearables, etc.) and services (for example for health-care, ambient-assisted living, for sports and leisure, for travel, for edutainment and creativity and others). AmI has several requirements on the underlying software architecture; the most important are • Ubiquity: The system should be integrated inconspicuously in the environment of the user. • Interoperability: The different devices and the different environments have to jointly communicate and cooperate. • Autonomy: A system has to be autonomous and reactive. • Dynamic: An ensemble has to be extensible by new devices. • User centered: The user (or the “Smart Player”) is in the center not the devices.
