TL;DR: It is found that the chemical and physical properties of these materials strongly depend on the preparation method, and the properties of the title hybrid materials with those of the "all-inorganic" CsSnI3 and CsPbI3 prepared using identical synthetic methods.
Abstract: A broad organic–inorganic series of hybrid metal iodide perovskites with the general formulation AMI3, where A is the methylammonium (CH3NH3+) or formamidinium (HC(NH2)2+) cation and M is Sn (1 and 2) or Pb (3 and 4) are reported. The compounds have been prepared through a variety of synthetic approaches, and the nature of the resulting materials is discussed in terms of their thermal stability and optical and electronic properties. We find that the chemical and physical properties of these materials strongly depend on the preparation method. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of 1–4 classifies the compounds in the perovskite structural family. Structural phase transitions were observed and investigated by temperature-dependent single crystal X-ray diffraction in the 100–400 K range. The charge transport properties of the materials are discussed in conjunction with diffuse reflectance studies in the mid-IR region that display characteristic absorption features. Temperature-dependent studies show a ...

TL;DR: New, hydrophobic ionic liquids with low melting points (<−30 °C to ambient temperature) have been synthesized and investigated, based on 1,3-dialkyl imidazolium cations and hydrophilic anions and thus water-soluble.
Abstract: New, hydrophobic ionic liquids with low melting points (<−30 °C to ambient temperature) have been synthesized and investigated, based on 1,3-dialkyl imidazolium cations and hydrophobic anions. Other imidazolium molten salts with hydrophilic anions and thus water-soluble are also described. The molten salts were characterized by NMR and elemental analysis. Their density, melting point, viscosity, conductivity, refractive index, electrochemical window, thermal stability, and miscibility with water and organic solvents were determined. The influence of the alkyl substituents in 1, 2, 3, and 4(5)-positions on these properties was scrutinized. Viscosities as low as 35 cP (for 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)amide (bis(triflyl)amide) and trifluoroacetate) and conductivities as high as 9.6 mS/cm were obtained. Photophysical probe studies were carried out to establish more precisely the solvent properties of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)amide). The hydrophobi...

TL;DR: Developing solar cells that are based on the sensitization of mesoscopic oxide films by dyes or quantum dots, and the examples for the first outdoor application of such solar cells will be provided.
Abstract: The quality of human life depends to a large degree on the availability of energy. This is threatened unless renewable energy resources can be developed in the near future. Chemistry is expected to make important contributions to identify environmentally friendly solutions of the energy problem. One attractive strategy discussed in this Forum Article is the development of solar cells that are based on the sensitization of mesoscopic oxide films by dyes or quantum dots. These systems have already reached conversion efficiencies exceeding 11%. The underlying fundamental processes of light harvesting by the sensitizer, heterogeneous electron transfer from the electronically excited chromophore into the conduction band of the semiconductor oxide, and percolative migration of the injected electrons through the mesoporous film to the collector electrode will be described below in detail. A number of research topics will also be discussed, and the examples for the first outdoor application of such solar cells wi...

TL;DR: In this article, the recent concepts of absolute electronegativity, {chi}, and absolute hardness, {eta}, are briefly reviewed and experimental results for a large number of molecules and radicals are presented.
Abstract: The recent concepts of absolute electronegativity, {chi}, and absolute hardness, {eta}, are briefly reviewed. Experimental values for a large number of molecules and radicals are presented. The values are shown to be in good agreement with the known chemical behavior, both as to nucleophilic-electrophilic properties and as to rates of reaction. Applications are also given for the use of empirical rank orders of the local hardness, {bar {eta}}. The uses of {chi} and {eta} are consistent with frontier orbital theory. To make meaningful comparisons in a series of molecules, it is necessary that these orbitals remain the same. Also it is necessary that the observed I and A values of the molecules relate to the appropriate frontier orbitals. 39 refs., 10 tabs.
