Brain–computer interfaces: a review

Abstract: 'Can the brain understand the brain?Can it understand the mind?'Such questions, here posed by neurophysiologist and 1981 Nobel laureate David Hubel, are under constant debate, but through the investigations of neurobiologists, psychologists, and physiologists, current knowledge and understanding has come a long way since brain exploration began hundreds of years BC. This article looks at how insights from some of the pioneers of neuroscience have begun to be integrated with today's technology, so bringing about the dawn of an era of brain and computer interfacing. One result has been brain–computer interfaces that can liberate the thoughts of those suffering from 'locked in' syndrome, by detection and interpretation of the brain's physiological signals. Also, manipulation of and support for the body's electrical and chemical signalling network has led to a variety of rehabilitation and therapeutic benefits, for example the possibility of giving sight to the blind. Culture in global knowledge societies : knowledge cultures and epistemic cultures

Abstract: This paper explores the concepts of knowledge culture and epistemic culture against the background of contemporary transformations in global society. Studies of knowledge culture came to prominence in the 1970s, with the trend towards laboratory fieldwork and direct observation in the new sociology of science. If the focus in such early studies was on knowledge construction, the focus in an epistemic culture approach by contrast is on the construction of the machineries of knowledge construction, relocating culture in the micropractices of laboratories and other bounded habitats of knowledge practice. Not all places of knowledge, however, are bounded spaces, and there is a case to be made for including in the empirical agenda more distributed locations. This is done here by introducing the concept of 'macro-epistemics', to describe wider networks of knowledge generation such as what is often known as 'the global financial architecture'. The role of gender in team collaboration and performance

Abstract: Given that women continue to be underrepresented in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and that scientific innovations are increasingly produced by team collaborations, we reviewed the existing literature regarding the effects of gender diversity on team processes and performance. Recent evidence strongly suggests that team collaboration is greatly improved by the presence of women in the group, and this effect is primarily explained by benefits to group processes. The evidence concerning the effect of gender diversity on team performance is more equivocal and contingent upon a variety of contextual factors. In light of the importance of collaboration in science, promoting the role of women in the field can have positive practical consequences for science and technology.

Abstract: Some platinum coordination complexes are active anticancer drugs in animal and man This new class of chemotherapeutics was discovered during the course of investigation of the electric field effect on bacterial growth The platinum electrodes electrolyzed during the experiment, releasing a platinum complex which caused complete cessation of cell division in the bacterial rods With this filamentation assay system, we were able to identify the specific chemical as cis-dichlorodiammineplatinum(II), a complex known since 1848 The bacterial studies with many such complexes suggested to us the generalizations that charged platinum complexes were bacteriocidal, while the neutral platinum complexes induced filamentation and, in lysogenic bacteria, lysis The neutral complexes have ignificant activity against transplantable, virally induced, and chemically induced cancers in animals They are synergistic with almost every other anticancer drug in current use In man kidney toxicity is the dose limiting
