TL;DR: In this paper, a multi-resolution and multi-sensor approach was developed for the accurate and detailed 3D modeling of the entire Roman Forum in Pompei, Italy, which contains more than 350 finds spread all over the forum as well as larger mural structures of previous buildings and temples.
Abstract: This article reports on a multi-resolution and multi-sensor approach developed for the accurate and detailed 3D modeling of the entire Roman Forum in Pompei, Italy. The archaeological area, approximately 150 × 80 m, contains more than 350 finds spread all over the forum as well as larger mural structures of previous buildings and temples. The interdisciplinary 3D modeling work consists of a multi-scale image- and range-based digital documentation method developed to fulfill all the surveying and archaeological needs and exploit all the intrinsic potentialities of the actual 3D modeling techniques. The data resolution spans from a few decimeters down to few millimeters. The employed surveying methodologies have pros and cons which will be addressed and discussed. The results of the integration of the different 3D data in seamlessly textured 3D model are finally presented and discussed.

TL;DR: This paper considers research parameters for the individual components of ARC (such as module design, connection methodologies, vehicle cooperation, and construction sequencing/synchronization), and the architectural implications of integrating these discrete components into a systemic, unifying process at the earliest stages of design.
Abstract: This paper takes a first step in characterizing a novel field of architectural research - aerial robotic construction (ARC) - where aerial robotics is used not only for construction, but as a guiding principle in the design and fabrication process. Featuring autonomous flying vehicles that lift small building elements and position them according to a precise digital blueprint, ARC offers a comprehensive new approach to architecture research and technology. Developed by the research groups of Gramazio & Kohler and Raffaello D'Andrea at ETH Zurich, ARC offers unique advantages over traditional approaches to building: it does not require scaffolding, it is easily scalable, and it offers digital integration and informational oversight across the entire design and building process. This paper considers 1) research parameters for the individual components of ARC (such as module design, connection methodologies, vehicle cooperation, and construction sequencing/synchronization), and 2) the architectural implicati...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a new approach termed as performative design, which suggests that in creating simulation environments for performance-based architectural design both generative and evaluative capabilities can be integrated within performancebased simulations.
Abstract: In view of current developments in the theory and technology of digital design, potential novel directions for environments that support performance-based design are beginning to emerge. The field of performance-based design is defined through an analysis of current work in the field. Various models of performance-based architectural design are presented and discussed. On the basis of this analysis, key concepts and issues in the application of performance-based design in architecture are defined and certain research directions for the development of new approaches are presented. Finally we propose a new approach termed: Performative Design. Performative Design suggests that in creating simulation environments for performance-based architectural design both generative and evaluative capabilities can be integrated within performance-based simulations. The potential of performance-based simulation as a model of performance-based design is explored through a case study from an experimental digital design stu...

TL;DR: A new technique for the fully automated 3D modelling of indoor environments from a point cloud is presented, which is acquired with several scans and is afterwards processed in order to segment planar structures, which have a noticeable architectural meaning in the interior.
Abstract: We present a new technique for the fully automated 3D modelling of indoor environments from a point cloud. The point cloud is acquired with several scans and is afterwards processed in order to segment planar structures, which have a noticeable architectural meaning (floor, ceiling and walls) in the interior. The basic approach to data segmentation is plane sweeping based on a hypothesis-and-test strategy. From the segmentation results, the ground plan is created through cell decomposition by trimming the two-dimensional ground space using half-space primitives. An extension in height of the ground contours makes the generation of the 3D model possible. The so-reconstructed indoor model is saved in CAD format for analysis and further applications or, simply, as a record of the interior geometry.

TL;DR: The concept and associated enabling technologies of AR are introduced and a survey of its existing applications in the area of architecture and design is presented and how the identified key technical issues could potentially be addressed are discussed.
Abstract: Recent advances in computer interface and hardware power have fostered Augmented Reality (AR) prototypes for various architecture and design applications. More intuitive visualization platforms are necessary for efficient use of digital information nowadays in the architecture and design industries. As a promising visualization platform to address this need, this paper introduces the concept and associated enabling technologies of AR and also presents a survey of its existing applications in the area of architecture and design. Another focus of the paper is to discuss how the identified key technical issues could potentially be addressed in the context of architecture and design applications.
