TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored the relationship between body type and fit preferences with body cathexis, clothing benefits sought by consumers, and demographic profiles of consumers and found significant associations were found between body shape and satisfaction with different body parts.
Abstract: Purpose – This paper explores the relationships between body type and fit preferences with body cathexis, clothing benefits sought by consumers, and demographic profiles of consumers.Design/methodology/approach – The survey instrument consisted of a questionnaire with scales assessing fit preference, body type, body cathexis, clothing benefits sought and consumer demographics.Findings – Significant associations were found between body cathexis (satisfaction with head/upper body, lower body, height, weight and torso) and body shape. The degree of satisfaction with different body parts depended on the body type of the individual. The level of satisfaction with head/upper body, height and torso did not vary by body type. No significant differences were found between fit preferences and body type for lower body garments.Research limitations/implications – The majority of respondents were between the ages 18 and 28, affluent Caucasian Americans, with an hourglass body type, who had a family income of $85,000 o...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors further explored what smart textiles precisely mean and made an analysis of the possibilities, the state of affairs and the need for further research, including research in the Department of Textiles at the Ghent University (Belgium).
Abstract: After technical textiles and functional textiles, smart textiles came into force a few years back. The term “smart textiles” covers a broad range. The application possibilities are only limited by our imagination and creativity. Hence it is not simple for the readers of the many articles that have been published to distinguish where reality ends and where fiction begins. In this paper, it is further explored what smart textiles precisely mean. In a second part, an analysis is made of the possibilities, the state of affairs and the need for further research, including research in the Department of Textiles at the Ghent University (Belgium).

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide an overview of the area of smart textiles and discuss new and developing materials and technologies used in the textile industries, including yarns, fabrics and other structures with added value functionality.
Abstract: Purpose – The paper aims to provide an overview of the area of smart textiles.Design/methodology/approach – The paper describes and discusses new and developing materials and technologies used in the textile industries.Findings – Significant progress has been achieved in the area of technical textiles. Fibres, yarns, fabrics and other structures with added‐value functionality have been successfully developed for technical and/or high performance end‐uses. The basic building blocks are already in place in the field of smart textiles and clothing.Practical implications – As progress in science and engineering research advances, and as the gap between designers and scientists narrows, the area of smart clothing is likely to keep on expanding for the foreseeable future. Growth is predicted to occur in two distinct directions: performance‐driven smart clothing and fashion‐driven smart clothing. There are challenges that have to be addressed.Originality/value – The paper provides information of value to those i...

TL;DR: In this article, the Kawabata Evaluation System (KES) was used to measure textile hand and comfort from the point of view of textile hand comfort and textile mechanical, surface and heat and moisture transfer properties.
Abstract: This paper traces the evolution of objective measurement of textile hand and comfort from Pierce through modern methodology and approaches. Special emphasis is given to discuss the contribution of the Kawabata Evaluation System (KES) towards advancing the state of objective measurement. Laboratory case studies are used to show how data generated by the KES and other instruments can be integrated into a comprehensive approach that attempts to explain human comfort response to garment wear in terms of fabric mechanical, surface and heat and moisture transfer properties.

TL;DR: This paper used nonlinear optimization methods and anthropometric data of US Army women to derive three multidimensional sizing systems that are designed to provide improved fit for women from the USA, a population with much variation.
Abstract: Most apparel sizing systems are based on one or two body dimensions and rely on assumptions about proportional body relationships to project other dimensions necessary to design the garment pattern. Garments from these systems will not fit a population with large variations in body proportions. Using nonlinear optimization methods and anthropometric data of US Army women three multidimensional sizing systems were derived that are designed to provide improved fit for women from the USA, a population with much variation. These systems range from an optimized linear system with a regular grade to an unconstrained optimized system with a grade break at each size. The optimized sizing systems compare favorably with D5585‐94 in their ability to accommodate variation in the population based on a mathematical test of the aggregate loss of each system. Issues related to pattern grading, size selection, and calculation of stock keeping units are discussed.
