Abstract: Location service provides position of mobile destination to source node so that position-based routing can be applied. Previous location service protocols suffer from partial flooding overhead, and/or location failure in group movement scenarios. To overcome those deficiencies, we propose a quorum-based location service. The basic idea is that destination node registers its location along a 'column' to form an update quorum. Source node makes a query along a 'row' to form a search quorum. The destination location is detected at the intersection between the update and search quorums. The overhead of each routing task, including location service, is O(√n), where n is the number of nodes in the network. Four strategies are proposed to adjust the quorum system and improve it's performance. To guarantee the success of location retrieval, both search and update quorums are extended by face routing which traverses outer boundary of the network. The simulation results show that our proposed location service has high success rate and good scalability.

Abstract: Although extensive studies have been conducted on top of online social networks OSNs, it is not clear how to characterise information propagation and social influence, two types of important but not well defined social behaviour. This paper presents a measurement study of 58 M messages collected from 700 K users on Twitter.com, a popular social medium. We analyse the propagation patterns of general messages and show how breaking news Michael Jackson's death spread through Twitter. Furthermore, we evaluate different social influences by examining their stabilities, assessments, and correlations. This paper addresses the complications and challenges we encounter when measuring message propagation and social influence on OSNs. We believe that our results here provide valuable insights for future OSN research.

Abstract: Buildings are a major consumer of energy. We believe that energy can be saved with the notion of implicit occupancy sensing where existing IT infrastructure can be used to replace and/or supplement explicit dedicated sensors to determine building occupancy and drive building operation. Implicit sensing has the promise to be both lower in cost than explicit sensing based on PIR and ultrasound sensors and to offer additional useful data about the occupants of a building. Our implicit sensing methods are largely based on monitoring IP and MAC addresses in Wi-Fi access points and in routers, and then correlating these addresses to the occupancy of a floor, area, or room of a building. We experimentally evaluate the feasibility of this dual-use of IT infrastructure. We demonstrate an application of implicit sensing to sense the pending occupancy of a user workspace and automatically control the plugged-in devices in the workspace.

Abstract: With the fast development of wireless technologies, wireless mesh networks WMNs are becoming an important networking infrastructure due to their low cost and increased high speed wireless internet connectivity. This paper implements a simulation system based on particle swarm optimisation PSO in order to solve the problem of mesh router placement in WMNs. Four replacement methods of mesh routers are considered: constriction method CM, random inertia weight method RIWM, linearly decreasing Vmax method LDVM and linearly decreasing inertia weight method LDIWM. Simulation results are provided, showing that the CM converges very fast, but has the worst performance among the methods. The considered performance metrics are the size of giant component SGC and the number of covered mesh clients NCMC. The RIWM converges fast and the performance is good. The LDIWM is a combination of RIWM and LDVM. The LDVM converges after 170 number of phases but has a good performance.
