TL;DR: In this article, the Delphi approach was used for a recent doctoral research thesis in Project Management (PM) with an example of the research approach that was applied to a recent research thesis and the objective is to provide both a description of the approach and an explanation of how it was successfully applied.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide project management (PM) students with an example of the Delphi research approach that was applied to a recent doctoral research thesis. The objective is to provide both a description of the approach and an explanation of how it was successfully applied so that researchers in PM may become more aware and expand their perceptions of methodological options available to them.Design/methodology/approach – The paper sets out a literature review of the Delphi approach and explains this research method as it was experienced as a research tool. The paper also provides reflection on the experience of being a researcher undertaking a doctoral study.Findings – The Delphi approach is one of many that may be selected for researching PM issues and problems. It is appropriate for researching complex issues where larger scale quantitative “hard data” fails to unearth richness in tacit knowledge to help the research understand subtle expert opinion. It does not offer the ri...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the reasons for the impact of Pinto's seminal contributions and how the topic of project success continues to evolve and analyze the development of this field of research since then.
Abstract: Purpose – Few scholars have been cited as frequently as Pinto, Slevin, and Prescott for their contributions to project success and related critical success factors (CSF) in the 1980s. Studies since then built on their articles to broaden and refine our understanding of the topic. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the reasons for the impact of these seminal contributions and how the topic of project success continues to evolve.Design/methodology/approach – The paper analyses the popularity of Pinto and his colleagues' contributions to project success and reviews the development of this field of research since then.Findings – Project success remains a vibrant school of thought as do the earlier definitions, measurement scales and dimensions, and assessment techniques that Pinto and his colleagues developed. The authors view success more broadly and think of it strategically because they consider longer‐term business objectives. Some research is now based on managerial or organizational theories and re...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated 47 value propositions for the adoption of BIM under a multiple case study investigation carried out in Australia and Hong Kong and identified the challenges and benefits for architectural and engineering consultants, contractors and steel fabricators.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to inform project management practice on the business benefits of building information modelling (BIM) adoption.Design/methodology/approach – BIM needs to compete against well‐ingrained methods to deliver projects in a fragmented and rather traditional industry. This paper investigates 47 value propositions for the adoption of BIM under a multiple case study investigation carried out in Australia and Hong Kong. The selected case study projects included a range of public (1) and private (4) sector building developments of small and large‐scale. Findings are coded, interpreted and synthesised in order to identify the challenges and business drivers, and the paper focuses mainly on challenges and benefits for architectural and engineering consultants, contractors and steel fabricators. As a condition for the selection criteria all case studies had to be collaborating by sharing BIM data between two or more consultants/stakeholders. As practices cannot afford to ignore B...

TL;DR: In this paper, an analytical framework was developed based on stakeholder theory within general management, as well as on sustainability research to analyze how various approaches to stakeholder management and sustainable development principles are included in internationally-used project management standards.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze how various approaches to stakeholder management, as well as sustainable development principles, are included in internationally‐used project management standards; and to consider the demands these approaches and principles place on project stakeholder management.Design/methodology/approach – An analytical framework was developed based on stakeholder theory within general management, as well as on sustainability research. Desk research was carried out by applying the analytical framework to three project management standards: ICB, PMBOK and PRINCE2.Findings – The research findings suggest that stakeholder issues are treated superficially in the project management standards, while putting stakeholder management in the context of sustainable development would ask for a paradigm shift in the underpinning values. The current project stakeholder practices represent mainly a management‐of‐stakeholders approach, i.e. making stakeholders comply to project needs, w...
