TL;DR: In this paper, a simple Ising spin model is proposed to describe a mechanism of making a decision in a closed community and it is shown via standard Monte Carlo simulations that very simple rules lead to rather complicated dynamics and to a power law in the decision time distribution.
Abstract: A simple Ising spin model which can describe a mechanism of making a decision in a closed community is proposed. It is shown via standard Monte Carlo simulations that very simple rules lead to rather complicated dynamics and to a power law in the decision time distribution. It is found that a closed community has to evolve either to a dictatorship or a stalemate state (inability to take any common decision). A common decision can be taken in a "democratic way" only by an open community.

TL;DR: A survey of continuous opinion dynamics under bounded confidence can be found in this paper, where the authors present the agent-based and density-based modeling frameworks including the cases of multidimensional opinions and heterogeneous bounds on opinions.
Abstract: Models of continuous opinion dynamics under bounded confidence have been presented independently by Krause and Hegselmann and by Deffuant et al. in 2000. They have raised a fair amount of attention in the communities of social simulation, sociophysics and complexity science. The researchers working on it come from disciplines such as physics, mathematics, computer science, social psychology and philosophy. In these models agents hold continuous opinions which they can gradually adjust if they hear the opinions of others. The idea of bounded confidence is that agents only interact if they are close in opinion to each other. Usually, the models are analyzed with agent-based simulations in a Monte Carlo style, but they can also be reformulated on the agent's density in the opinion space in a master equation style. The contribution of this survey is fourfold. First, it will present the agent-based and density-based modeling frameworks including the cases of multidimensional opinions and heterogeneous bounds o...

TL;DR: In this article, a series of models of sociophysics introduced by Galam and Galam et al. in the last 25 years were reviewed and several real political events were successfully predicted including the French extreme right party in the 2000 first round of French presidential elections, the voting at fifty-fifty in several democratic countries (Germany, Italy, Mexico, and the victory of the "no" to the 2005 French referendum on the European constitution).
Abstract: We review a series of models of sociophysics introduced by Galam and Galam et al. in the last 25 years. The models are divided into five different classes, which deal respectively with democratic voting in bottom-up hierarchical systems, decision making, fragmentation versus coalitions, terrorism and opinion dynamics. For each class the connexion to the original physical model and techniques are outlined underlining both the similarities and the differences. Emphasis is put on the numerous novel and counterintuitive results obtained with respect to the associated social and political framework. Using these models several major real political events were successfully predicted including the victory of the French extreme right party in the 2000 first round of French presidential elections, the voting at fifty–fifty in several democratic countries (Germany, Italy, Mexico), and the victory of the "no" to the 2005 French referendum on the European constitution. The perspectives and the challenges to make sociophysics a predictive solid field of science are discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method is applied to complex, moving geometries in which computational cells are partially filled with fluid, and a detailed comparison is made with FIDAP simulation results for the flow about a periodic line of cylinders in a channel at a nonzero Reynolds number.
Abstract: The lattice-Boltzmann (LB) method is applied to complex, moving geometries in which computational cells are partially filled with fluid. The LB algorithm is modified to include a term that depends on the percentage of the cell saturated with fluid. The method is useful for modeling suspended obstacles that do not conform to the grid. Another application is to simulations of flow through reconstructed media that are not easily segmented into solid and liquid regions. A detailed comparison is made with FIDAP simulation results for the flow about a periodic line of cylinders in a channel at a non-zero Reynolds number. Two cases are examined. In the first simulation, the cylinders are given a constant velocity along the axis of the channel, and the steady solution is acquired. The transient behavior of the system is then studied by giving the cylinders an oscillatory velocity. For both steady and oscillatory flows, the method provides excellent agreement with FIDAP simulation results, even at locations close ...

TL;DR: In this article, a lattice-Boltzmannian representation is used to realize hydrodynamic boundary conditions at a solid surface. But the resulting physics properties are independent of the position and the orientation of the surface with respect to the lattice mesh.
Abstract: We describe a novel way based on lattice-Boltzmann representation for realizing hydrodynamic boundary conditions at a solid surface. It is shown that using this approach the resulting physics properties are independent of the position and the orientation of the surface with respect to the lattice mesh. The fluxes of mass, energy as well as both normal and tangential momenta can be accurately controlled to correspond to various fluid dynamics situations.
