Abstract: In this paper, we familiarise the readers with some of the important ideas, practices and research that have contributed to the continuing integration of sustainability into the theory and practice of strategic management. In doing so, we present an in depth look at the term, Sustainable Strategic Management (SSM), as it has evolved from a rudimentary idea to a mature framework for managing business organisations in the 21st century. We examine some of the foundation contributions of early management pioneers. We then examine the concept of SSM as it has evolved from its simple competitiveness-advantage roots to its more mature doing-well-by-doing-good corporate strategies of today. Finally, we conclude by presenting an enterprise-strategy-based model of SSM designed to guide organisations as they attempt to integrate SSM at the corporate, competitive and functional strategy levels now and into the future.

Abstract: Much of the management scholarship on the strategy performance relationship has focused primarily on the economic, short- and intermediate-term outcomes associated with an organisation's strategies. Recently, however, a largely disparate group of researchers has challenged the long-term viability of many such strategies, primarily from environmental and ecological points of view. Relatively few scholars have vigorously sought to bridge the gap between these ostensibly contradictory perspectives. This paper addresses this gap by defining and elaborating a subdiscipline within the management field ? Sustainable Strategic Management (SSM) ? concerned with the development and implementation of strategies that are sustainable from both market and environmental perspectives. It serves as a springboard for scholars who seek to pursue additional research in this arena.

Abstract: The concepts of sustainable leadership remain complex and confusing for employees, leaders and organisations to grasp. It is a challenge for today's organisations to define these concepts and to be able to measure them. This study analysed the interpretations of sustainability, subsequently developing a sustainable leadership definition acceptable to all demographics within an organisation. This simplified definition and example will be used in a questionnaire developed by the authors, the Sustainable Leadership Questionnaire (SLQ). The ultimate objective for the use of this definition is to aid in gauging employees' perception of sustainable leadership in organisations by way of the SLQ. Additionally, the questionnaire will be used as a baseline to track organisational improvements, if any, over time in sustainable leadership behaviours.

Abstract: Some pundits have gone as far as to suggest that sustainability represents a shift equal in magnitude to the industrial revolution. While perhaps an audacious claim, sustainability nonetheless is capturing the attention of business firms, governments and consumers. Consumers, for example, place the highest burden on business to address sustainability. Surprisingly, however, many executives appear to be unclear as to what their long-term strategy should be, given sustainability. The purpose of this paper is to add to the strategy-sustainability discussion and explain a conceptual framework that addresses the focal topic. The framework is not restricted to a single dimension of sustainability, such as the natural environment, or to a single sector, like the manufacturing sector. Second, the framework contains five key dimensions and focuses explicitly on strategy making, grounded in sound theory. Lastly, to address practicality, a case study of the company, Whole Foods Market, is presented to elaborate on the framework.

Abstract: Recognising pressing ecological sustainability issues such as global warming and the depletion of natural resources, leaders are challenged to address these concerns amongst competing demands. Therefore, organisations and their members must become innovative in the way they develop and manufacture products, offer services and conduct business. To advance this discussion, we propose a framework that identifies how innovation for sustainability can be fostered in organisations. We explain that innovation for sustainability requires an organisational climate for sustainability grounded in ethics. Furthermore, we illustrate how positive emotions moderate the relationship between this climate and innovation for sustainability.
