TL;DR: A survey of the victimization experienced by a sample of female juvenile prostitutes in Addis Ababa Ethiopia has been conducted in 1992-93 as mentioned in this paper, where 30 juvenile prostitutes interviewed by the researchers were aged 14-18 years with an average age of initiation to prostitution of 13.9 years.
Abstract: This survey of the victimization experienced by a sample of female juvenile prostitutes in Addis Ababa Ethiopia has two justifications. The first is to quantify in an empirical manner the extent of the victimization experienced by 30 juvenile prostitutes and the second is to highlight the victimization in an African context. The 30 juvenile prostitutes interviewed by the researchers in 1992-93 were aged 14-18 years with an average age of initiation to prostitution of 13.9 years. 22 (73%) had been raped at least once and a further 4 girls experienced sexual assaults. 11 (37%) had been pregnant; 6 pregnancies were terminated 2 were carried to full term and 3 infants died. Half of the sample used a contraceptive device 23 (93%) had been beaten while working on the streets and 25 (83%) had things stolen from them while living on the streets. Several implications for policy and practice which may alleviate the most acute manifestations of prostitution are cited.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Cross-cultural counseling should be seen as a contextualized cultural activity which requires the open-mindedness and sensitivity of the practitioners to the cultural influence of both their clients and themselves.
Abstract: This article examines the nature and limits of the existing cross-cultural counseling discourses in order to search for a more culturally sensitive cross-cultural counseling approach. The authors pinpoint the inherent cultural deficiencies of the existing modification-based cross-cultural counseling approaches and advocate that the cross-cultural counseling process should be an inter-subjective interaction between the counselors and counselees, both of whom are products of their own culture. Cross-cultural counseling therefore should be seen as a contextualized cultural activity which requires the open-mindedness and sensitivity of the practitioners to the cultural influence of both their clients and themselves.
