TL;DR: A close survey of women in general in ancient India can be found in this article, where women in various forms as conceived by the Risis, women involved in social vices, desire for a girl child, Educat ion and teaching and other professions, etc.
Abstract: Ancient India witnessed the eff lorescence of two grand civilizations, the Indus Valley Civilization, closely fol lowed by the Vedic civilization. The civilization, started by the Vedic Aryans extends over the Age of the Sarphitas, Brahmanas and Upanisads , known as the Vedic period, the age of the Vedamgas (ancillaries of the Veda) and the Sutra literature, known as the later Vedic period. There is a mistaken belief among the Indians, even among the welleducated ones, that the Veda is only a religious scripture. But the Veda is not only a religious book of the Indians. It is, in actual fact, India 's first literary document inscribing the early Indian history, its geographical features and boundaries and its socio-economic structure. Though the Upanisads essentially dwell upon the lofty thoughts of the communicat ion between the individual entity and other universal entities, of the intimacy between the individual self and the Supreme or Universal Self, yet even there we find scattered information of society prevalent at the time. Hence it 's high t ime this misconception due to the ignorance of the masses, literate or otherwise, regarding the Vedic Literature were once and for all quashed. The object ive of this article is a close survey of women in general in ancient India. This survey encompasses the abovementioned periods. Of course, the minutest appraisal is not possible in the frame of an article. But an over-all view on the subject of women in its social aspect may satisfy the learned readers. The features under study are : 1. Women in various forms as conceived by the Rsis, 2. Desire for a girl child, 3. Educat ion and teaching and other professions, 4. Marriage, 5. Divorce, 6. Property rights, 7. Women involved in social vices.
