TL;DR: The authors raised the question whether it is possible to develop a theory of border which will encompass the diverse types of border and boundary experience and argued that the only way to create a common language between the different disciplinary languages (including geographers, political scientists, anthropologists, sociologists, economists and others) is to creating a common set of theoretical constructs and frameworks which can be used as a generalized explanatory model for understanding changing border/boundary phenomenon.
Abstract: This paper raises the question whether it is possible to develop a theory of bordering which will encompass the diverse types of border and boundary experience I have previously argued that the only way to create a common language between the different disciplinary languages (including geographers, political scientists, anthropologists, sociologists, economists and others) is to create a common set of theoretical constructs and frameworks which can be used as a generalized explanatory model for understanding changing border/boundary phenomenon (Newman 2003) In essence, this paper reiterates a question asked long ago in one of the classic studies of international boundaries, namely how are boundaries (borders) to be redefined in the settings of contemporary time and place (Jones 1959)

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors define trends within these geographical studies in terms of the EU integration process and discover commonalities of themes and methods within them, and classify three approaches (flow, cross-border cooperation, and people) within them.
Abstract: The number of geographical studies on borders and border regions has increased over the last few decades due to the process of globalization. The European Union (EU) integration process in particular has created demand for such studies of its internal borders and the changing views about them. This research aims to define trends within these geographical studies in terms of the EU integration process and discover commonalities of themes and methods within them. Three approaches a re identified (flow, cross-border cooperation, and people), geographical studies of borders and border regions are categorized within them, and the approaches are compared to one another in an attempt to better understand the trends in geographical research on European borders and border regions.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the process of spatial integration in ten European cross-border metropolitan regions by comparing three indicators, relating to flows of crossborder commuters, differentials of gross domestic product per capita and residents’ citizenship.
Abstract: This article analyses the process of spatial integration in ten European cross-border metropolitan regions by comparing three indicators, relating to flows of cross-border commuters, differentials of gross domestic product per capita and residents’ citizenship. Our results allow, firstly, confirmation of the hypothesis that the greater the economic disparities, the greater the level of interactions measured by cross-border commuting. Our work also allows confirmation of the hypothesis that strong economic interactions have an impact on the cross-border integration of communities, measured by the proportion of residents based on the other side of the border. Finally, this article leads to a typology based on three models of cross-border integration being proposed: by specialization, by polarization and by osmosis.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a typology for the EU NUTS III border regions, interpreting the socioeconomic dynamics occurring within the enlarged EU space, incorporating quantitative and qualitative determinants for border regions.
Abstract: The processes of European Union (EU) integration and enlargement have produced a new regional socioeconomic map in Europe. Border regions, in particular, have been put in a state of flux. The re‐allocation of activities, opportunities and threats is changing their socioeconomic role and significance. Thus, border regions have become an issue of great importance during the last fifteen years in both the areas of scientific research and policy making. The overall picture of the actual dynamics occurring at the border regions, however, when economic barriers have been abolished, remains rather unclear. The absence of an appropriate methodological framework for the study of the impact of EU integration and enlargement dynamics on border regions is evident. The paper proposes a typology for the EU NUTS III border regions, interpreting the socioeconomic dynamics occurring within the enlarged EU space. Primary and secondary data, incorporating quantitative and qualitative determinants for border regions...
