Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, column flow experiments were conducted in Ottawa sand under both saturated and unsaturated flow conditions using two bacteriophages, MS2 and φX174, and the results from elution experiments using beef extract solution revealed that the increased removal of MS2 in the Ottawa sand appeared to be caused by increased sorption whereas the increased removing of MS 2 was due to inactivation.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a review of methods for using geophysical and hydrological data to estimate hydraulic parameters and their spatial correlation structures is presented, which can be used to aid numerical aquifer model construction, calibration, and flow simulation.

161 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, a down-dip decrease in the 34 S content of groundwater sulphate over the unconfined and shallow confined areas of the aquifer is indicative of a progressive increase in the significance of pyrite-derived sulphate in the system.

157 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the effect of sorption on degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid was studied in a soil amended with various amounts of activated carbon (AC).

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of pore-scale dispersion on concentration statistical moments in transport through heterogeneous aquifers is investigated in a Lagrangean framework, continuous limit of the particle tracking procedure, by adopting a few approximations.

148 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the uptake of 5×10 −4 mol/l solutions of Cd, Pb and Zn by a fluvio glacial deposit with high carbonate content (227 mg/g) was studied in column and batch experiments.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a two-region nonequilibrium model was used to calibrate initial solute-transport parameter estimates generated from tracer-breakthrough curves (TBCs) developed by tracer tests conducted in uni-axial solution conduits in karstic aquifers.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the use of six flushing agents, i.e., two anionic surfactants, two complexing agents (cyclodextrins), a humic acid, and an alcohol, for solubilizing and removing residual-phase immiscible liquid from porous media.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a 15 m×15 m field plots, a Te Awa silt loam and a Twyford fine sandy loam, located in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, were applied with bromide, picloram, atrazine, and simazine.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the removal of bacteriophages MS2 and PRD1, spores of Clostridium bifermentans R5 and Escherichia coli WR1 by deep well injection into a sandy aquifer, was studied at a pilot field site in the southeast of the Netherlands.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The results of a laboratory study dealing with macropore continuity effects on breakthrough curves (BTCs) and solute distribution in a Forman loam (fine-loamy mixed Udic Haploborolls) soil were obtained under a constant hydraulic head of 0.08 m from a 2-dimensional column (slab) containing artificial macropores.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the effectiveness of various electron donors (acetate, hydrogen gas, elemental sulphur, thiosulphate, aqueous ferrous iron and pyrite) at stimulating denitrification was compared in microcosm experiments involving sediment from the Baden aquifer.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors modelled lithium transport through an undisturbed solid waste sample and a pilot-scale experimental landfill by use of the same probabilistic Lagrangian approach.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the active layer of pyritic mine tailings at Nanisivik Mine, located in a permafrost area on Baffin Island in northern Canada, was investigated.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a 2D numerical model incorporating vapour-phase diffusion, advection, sorption and biodegradation was used to simulate the effect of a building floor slab on transport processes.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, an ensemble of realizations of random, spatially correlated permeability fields are generated and employed in model simulations of a spill event, and statistical techniques are then used to quantify the sensitivity of model predictions to input parameters, identifying the parameters or processes that may be of primary importance in the determination of organic liquid distributions in heterogeneous systems.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors summarized key technical and economic issues for surfactant-enhanced remediation of contaminated soil and ground water supplies and showed how a site-specific capillary curve can be used to optimize contaminant solubility while mitigating mobilization and vertical migration.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assess the effect of hydrological and lithological factors on discharge of contaminated groundwater from abandoned deep coal mine discharges in the UK and demonstrate that after flooding of a deep mine is complete and groundwater begins to migrate from the mine voids into surface waters or adjoining aquifers, flushing by fresh recharge results in a gradual improvement in the quality of groundwater (principally manifested as decreasing Fe concentrations and stabilisation of pH around 7).

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a survey of rural groundwater quality in Canada showed that some drinking water wells were consistently contaminated with bacteria, whereas others were consistently free of such contamination, and the prediction of the most relevant factors affecting well water quality in Ontario was evaluated for different soil and geological profiles in the Goromonzi district of Zimbabwe.
