TL;DR: In this paper, an analysis of the role played by the 1952 language movement (bhasha andolan) in East Bengal in the development of a Bengali nationalist discourse is presented.
Abstract: This paper is an analysis of the role played by the 1952 language movement (bhasha andolan) in East Bengal in the development of a Bengali nationalist discourse. The language movement forged a conscious link between various subaltern social groups, enabling them to transcend existing barriers and transform them into formidable political actors. Using the concept of counter hegemonic striving, this paper argues that the language movement was a definitive outcome of years of counter hegemonic activities of the Bengali subalterns. This process of counter hegemony was especially evident in the peasant insurgency in rural areas and in the building of an alternative political organization. The articulation of political power through these two processes stands in sharp contrast to the efforts of the Muslim League, both ideologically and politically. It negated the idea of the very existence of the Pakistan state, and facilitated new ways of articulating the concept of Bengali nationalism. Although the u...

TL;DR: The authors examines changes in the Iranian educational system implemented by the Islamic theocracy of Ayatollah Khomeini and his religious followers in the decade after the Revolution overthrowing the Shah.
Abstract: This paper examines changes in the Iranian educational system implemented by the Islamic theocracy of Ayatollah Khomeini and his religious followers in the decade after the Revolution overthrowing the Shah. The study demonstrates weaknesses in the theoretical literature on development and education because of its inability to anticipate people in a developing nation empowering a government controlled by religious leaders. Religious values dominate this society and they have significantly altered Iranian education in terms of who teaches; how political/religious ideology, gender roles, and other subjects are taught; who attends schools; and consequentially, these affect Iran's literacy rates.

TL;DR: In this article, it was found that the number of urban poor has increased from 85,000 (1970) to 94.906 (1976) and decreased to 81,300 (1984).
Abstract: Poverty is one of the major problem faced by Malaysia and has been given a special emphasis in the New Economic Policy (NEP). The poverty rate has decreased in 1984 (18.7 %) compared to 1976 (39.6%) and 1910 (49.4%) (Third Malaysia Plan. TMP p.104). Nevertheless, the rural poverty especially in 'the agricultural sector is still high (24.7%) in 1984 as compared to urban poverty (8..2%). The urban poverty-rate bas decreased in 1984 coinpared to 1976 and 1970. Nevertheless, by looking at the number, of households involved. -it is found that thenumber of urban poor has increased from 85,000 (1970) to 94.906 (1976) and decreased to 81,300 (1984). This trend shows that the total number of urban poor does ,not expC;rience-much change. partially as a result of migration of the rural poor. The migrariorrprocess is in accordance with one of the NEP objectives to encourage more rural Bumiputras (sons of the soil) to be involved in the modem sector and to restructure the urban ethnic distribution. This phenomena also shows that rural poverty is a serious problem, thus forcing a majority of the youths to migrate in search of a better life in the cities,
