Abstract: A follow-up study of 94 male and 175 female sterilization patients i n South Dakota is reported. Their average IQ was 57.6 with a range of 21 to 89. 379 of the patients relatives also had mental defects. The 93 married patients had an average of 5.5 children and were still in their early 30s. There were no reported changes in libido after the operation. 100 patients had been categorized as sex offenders before the operation. 11 patients have since repeated as sex offenders and 3 have started sex offenses. The reduction in sex offenses is attributed to better supervision. The possibility hereditary defects by sterilization is discussed.
