Abstract: This communication will be chiefly devoted to but one of the many interesting features of the endotheliomas, namely, the hyperplasia of the adjacent bone. That the relationship between the meningeal tumor and the hyperostosis is not generally understood was brought out at a recent meeting of the Society of Neurological Surgeons held in Philadelphia. At that time Professor Spiller exhibited many interesting specimens from his extensive collection of brain tumors. In showing some examples of endotheliomas he stated that these tumors were sometimes associated with an overlying cranial hyperostosis which he considered to be the cause of the subjacent growth. This opinion was so contrary to that which has long been held and taught in the writer's clinic, that this occasion is taken to present some data bearing on this particular aspect of these lesions. It is quite probable that the true character of the bony tumor has often been

Abstract: The results of the tabulation of multiple sclerosis as one of the defects found in drafted men are plotted on the accompanying map. It shows that the maximum rate for this disease was found in Michigan and Minnesota, in which there were eighteen persons with this disease per 100,000. The Michigan rate is based on six cases so diagnosed by local boards and on nine at Camp Dodge. Excepting Delaware and the District of Columbia (whose rates depend on one and two cases, respectively), the next highest ratio is that for Wisconsin, fourteen per 100,000, where five cases were found by local boards and six by examiners at Camp Grant. That these states with a high ratio for multiple sclerosis are adjacent states, bordering on the Great Lakes, is of great interest. Since examinations were made at three different camps, the result cannot be ascribed to the idiosyncrasy of a

Abstract: In this study only those cases were included in which the diagnosis was thought to be certain. Postencephalitic cases were not considered. For estimation of age and sex incidence 146 cases were used; for clinical studies, 140. The advantages of these records for source material as compared with hospital records are their uniformity, since they have all been under the direction of one person and written by a small number of historians (each has averaged about four years), and their brevity which, since only the more significant data are recorded, is in favor of greater accuracy. Their disadvantages are their occasional incompleteness and the limitation to positive data and to private cases. The restriction of statements to positive findings is compensated for by the fact that conclusions drawn from the recorded facts are minimal and therefore conservative. That age and sex distribution among private and dispensary cases runs along the

TL;DR: Normally during a fasting period the blood sugar maintains a fairly constant level but, according to Lusk 6 and Strouse, variations were seemingly associated with the season of the year and emotional states are likewise associated with changes in blood sugar concentration.
Abstract: Normally during a fasting period the blood sugar maintains a fairly constant level. The figures for normal persons obtained by various investigators are: Bang, 1 0.10 per cent.; Myers and Bailey 2 (500 cases), 0.09 to 0.11 per cent.; Williams and Humphrey 3 (thirty-nine cases), 0.11 per cent. and (seventy-four cases) 0.107 per cent.; Liefman and Stern, 4 0.105 per cent. Weston, 5 in a series of mental cases, found a blood sugar content ranging from 0.085 to 0.122 per cent., figures well within normal limits. The blood sugar content may vary from a variety of causes. Not only does diet affect the sugar concentration but, according to Lusk 6 and Strouse, 7 variations were seemingly associated with the season of the year. Emotional states are likewise associated with changes in blood sugar concentration. Such effects were demonstrated in some of our cases. This is in accord with the observation

Abstract: An opportunity for further study of the anatomic relations of the faisceau de Turck was afforded in a patient who was admitted to the neuropsychiatric wards of the Philadelphia General Hospital in my service on Nov. 30, 1920, and who died on Dec. 10, 1920. The clinical symptoms began six months before the fatal termination, but having no bearing on the anatomic study, will be omitted. At necropsy examination, a tumor (Fig. 1) measuring 5 cm. anterio-posteriorly and 4 cm. transversely was found occupying the posterior two thirds of the first and second temporal convolutions. It was adherent to the dura, and a cross section showed marked vascularity. Posteriorly the tumor (Fig. 2) did not extend quite to the anterior occipital fissure. Macroscopically, in its posterior aspects, the tumor was rather sharply defined, but there was evidently some invasion of the adjoining cortex and white matter, that is, of the

TL;DR: The mental symptoms of multiple sclerosis are of several types, and different writers stress different symptoms, while in 90 per cent of cases there are mental alterations which warrant the term "mental symptoms."
Abstract: The mental symptoms of multiple sclerosis are of several types, and different writers stress different symptoms. Some describe the euphoric cases, others cases accompanied by dementia, while still others center their attention on the occasional episodes of depression, the delusions and hallucinations. A cursory view of the subject shows that in multiple sclerosis there is not a consistent group of symptoms. We are quite unprepared to state the incidence of mental symptoms in multiple sclerosis. However, including euphoria, probably in 90 per cent. of cases there are mental alterations which warrant the term "mental symptoms." Because they are overshadowed by physical symptoms and are so often of a character to introduce no element of alarm, they are frequently disregarded. Then, too, the physical condition makes the patient inapt in all his physical undertakings and renders him psychiatrically nonpotential, even in those instances in which unhampered psychotic tendencies would otherwise bring

TL;DR: Results following the surgical treatment of tumors of the spinal cord depend on the duration of symptoms and on the position, level and type of tumor.
Abstract: Results following the surgical treatment of tumors of the spinal cord depend on the duration of symptoms and on the position, level and type of tumor. The histories vary but are suggestive and give the first clue to the diagnosis. The onset of symptoms is gradual; sensory disturbance is usually the first, that is, paresthesia or anesthesia, accompanied by motor disturbances. The condition may improve temporarily; but the symptoms gradually progress to a loss of sensibility and motor function, in conjunction with exaggerated reflexes below the cord segment involved. About thirty-five years have elapsed since the first tumor of the spinal cord was removed by Horsley. During this short time, many tumors of the spinal cord have been removed; but many have also been overlooked because a definite level of loss of motor power and sensibility was not present or the exact history of motor or sensory loss that was

TL;DR: In this article, a Polypragmasie is introduced, in which den Kindern ein dauerndes Krankheitsbewustsein beibringt und sie dadurch ernst schadigt.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION This paper is a part of a general study of the entire cortex of the sheep brain, the motor area alone being considered in this communication. The work has been carried on under the direction of Dr. Adolf Meyer, to whom I am grateful for guidance and much valuable assistance. Marcacci, 1 in 1877, outlined in the sheep brain four excitable areas: first, the center for the opposite fore limb in the posterior part of the superior frontal convolution; second, the center for the muscles of the neck, stimulation of which caused the head to pull to the opposite side and in the male, a movement simulating butting; this center he also located in the superior frontal convolution in front of that for the fore limb; third, a center for movements of the facial muscles; no mention is made concerning whether these movements occur on the same or opposite

Abstract: cause change in another organ through the medium of visceral nerves. Every important internal organ is connected, through afferent sympathetic and efferent spinal nerves, with definite skeletal structures, and if inflamed shows reflex sensory and motor actions, and that if the inflammation becomes chronic, important diagnostic trophic changes occur, such as altered sensation and muscle degeneration. For instance, chronic inflammation in the apex of a lung produces reflex degenerative changes in overlying skin, subcutaneous tissue and muscle, which influence percussion, palpation, and auscultation, and must be con-
