TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the scientific merit of the Foster´s Session-RPE method and found that it is a useful tool for quantifying training load because it is simple to use, easy to understand and relatively easy to implement.
Abstract: The fundamental goal for a sports coach is to maximize athletic performance. The best performance gains come from prescribing an optimal amount of training loads with appropriate recovery periods to allow a greatest adaptation before competition. Training load is influenced by both training volume and training intensity. A precise understanding of loads performed during training can be beneficial for both the coach and the athlete. The coach can use feedback from training to systematically modify training periodization so that future performances can be improved. Training load can be monitored in many different ways, however, a very simple method was recently proposed by Carl Foster: the session-RPE method. Training monitoring ensures that both sufficient training loads are implemented and that excessive loads are not, leading the coach to better understanding of the training process. Ultimately, this may lead to improved performance in competition. Therefore, there is a great interest in valid and reliable methods for training load monitoring. In this review, we investigated the scientific merit of the Foster´s Session-RPE method. Based on the available data, it seems that the session-RPE method is a useful tool for quantifying training load because it is simple to use, easy to understand and relatively easy to implement. However, additional data is required to validate the Session-RPE method in different sports in an ecological perspective.

TL;DR: In this article, a tactical declarative knowledge test in tennis through game video scenes in final situations is presented, and the results show how scenes of decision-making situations in tennis games can be validated items with agreement values above 0.80.
Abstract: This study reports on the systematical validation process to construct a tactical declarative knowledge test in tennis through game video scenes in final situations. Psychometric procedures directed to theoretical validation were followed to verify: content validity and reliability testing through objectivity of agreement between observers (CEO) and ecological validity. Besides it was possible to implement a feedback of points’ values to the test containing possible decision making as well as to standardize a scale of relevance of perceptual signals per item. The results show how scenes of decision making situations in tennis games can be validated items with agreement values above 0.80. Validation process began with 192 game scenes and ended with the approval of 20 scenes – items – for the creation of the test of tactical declarative knowledge in tennis.

TL;DR: This review aimed to investigate the existing literature and discuss if the proposed addition of strength exercises on a conventional warm-up routine may be beneficial for athletes competing in power events.
Abstract: Warm-up is a common practice among athletes. Evidences suggest that conventional warm-up routines may prevent injuries and improve performance in tasks dependent on oxygen provision to the muscles. However, it is questionable whether this approach is valid for athletes relying mainly on muscle power. Some studies propose that these athletes may benefit from the addition of strength exercises on their conventional warm-up routines. This hypothesis is based on the potentiation phenomenon, which is triggered when muscles are activated by means of high intensity stimulation. Thus, this review aimed to investigate the existing literature and discuss if the proposed addition of strength exercises on a conventional warm-up routine may be beneficial for athletes competing in power events. In addition, the work presents the possible mechanisms responsible for potentiation and identifies appropriate strategies for triggering this phenomenon, improving performance.

TL;DR: In this paper, the internal consistency of the fine motricity battery test for the EDM for Brazilian children was verified using the Pearson's linear correlation with p value < 0.05.
Abstract: The objective of this study was to verify the reliability of the fine Motricity battery test from the Motor Development Scale – EDM for Brazilian children. A total of 101 children from 6 to 10 years of age were evaluated. The descriptive analysis of data was carried through average, standard deviation, minimum value and maximum value, median, variance and mode. The internal consistency of this battery was assessed by Cronbach's Alpha statistical test, and correlation of the variables by Pearson's linear correlation, with p value <0.05. There was high correlation (0, 754) between Fine Motor Age and General Motor Age indicating good internal consistency (0.834). At Fine Motricity tasks, through inter-item consistency, good internal consistency was also found (0.801). These data demonstrate the logical and structured concept that de Fine Motricity battery teste from Motor Development Scale shows, confirming its reliability.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated some studies about salivary cortisol as a competitive stress indicator for the last 15 years and found evidence of higher cortisol concentrations when athletes were less experienced (non-elite athletes).
Abstract: Cortisol is commonly called the “hormone of stress” by the fact that its production and secretion increase substantially under stress situations such as sports competitions. The aim of the present study is to investigate some studies about salivary cortisol as a competitive stress indicator for the last 15 years. A deep search was done through databases such as PUBMED; SCIELO; SCIENCEDIRECT; LILACS; MEDLINE. 377 papers were selected, after considering six inclusion and three exclusion criteria. The studies pointed to increases on cortisol levels in the beginning, end and also during the competition, observing a previous effect mainly in home competitions. There was an evidence of higher cortisol concentrations when athletes were less experienced (non-elite athletes). The increase of cortisol was associated to a higher physical demand (physiological factor) and an emotional overload (psychological factor).

TL;DR: In this paper, a descriptive study aimed to analyze the research groups affiliated to CNPq's Research Groups Directory, using the search word "gymnastics" to limit and find these groups, as well as the scientific production of their leaders.
Abstract: The descriptive study aimed to analyze the research groups affiliated to CNPq’s Research Groups Directory, using the search word ‘gymnastics’ to limit and find these groups, as well as the scientific production of their leaders. Two complementary searches were developed to attain the proposed objective: one in the above referred Directory and the other in the Lattes Platform. The results indicate the existence of 30 groups, certified by their institutions, mostly members of the Health Sciences/Physical Education area. The institutions where the registered groups are housed are predominantly located in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil, and the scientific production of the leaders in the last three years shows significant efforts to publish their research, although there is much to be done. It is believed that these results show the ‘state of the art or knowledge’ of the groups that study gymnastics in Brazil.

TL;DR: In this article, the main evidences regarding the physiological mechanisms which can determine the EPOC are discussed, as well as the effects of intensity and duration of exercise on the magnitude and length of EPOC.
Abstract: The excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) has been broadly investigated. Nevertheless, the physiological mechanisms responsible for the determination of magnitude and time course of EPOC are not totally explained. In this review, the main evidences regarding the physiological mechanisms which can determine the EPOC are discussed, as well as the effects of intensity and duration of exercise on the magnitude and length of EPOC. The fast EPOC seems to be a result of ATP-CP resynthesis, lactate removal, body temperature rise and lipidic metabolism rise. Most of these alterations have different kinetics from reported to EPOC. The slow EPOC seems to be a result of triglyceride/fatty acid cycle. The magnitude and length of EPOC can be linearly associated with the time and exponentially associated with the intensity. Due to this association, it is possible that magnitude and length of EPOC can impact on the body weight loss programs.

TL;DR: There was no difference between the groups regarding the analyzed biomarkers of oxidative stress (amount of substances that react with thiobarbituric acid and catalase activity) or glucose metabolism in skeletal muscle of rats.
Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the effects of physical training on biomarkers of oxidative stress and glucose metabolism in skeletal muscle of rats. Wistar rats (90 days) were trained by treadmill running at the speed equivalent to the metabolic transition aerobic-anaerobic (MT) and 25% above it (AT). As controls, rats maintained as sedentary (S) were used. There was no difference between the groups regarding the analyzed biomarkers of oxidative stress (amount of substances that react with thiobarbituric acid and catalase activity). Glucose uptake and Lactate production were reduced and Glucose oxidation and Synthesis of Glycogen were increased in the AT group compared to the others. The training at 25% above the aerobic-anaerobic transition intensity induced adaptations in muscle glucose metabolism in the absence of oxidative stress.

TL;DR: The results suggest that chronic alcohol intake provokes a metabolic desequilibrium and exercises are usefull in controling body mass during recovery period, however, this exercise protocol did not alter animal diet habits.
Abstract: The purpose of this work was to analyse the effects of chronic alcohol ingestion and exercise in the body mass, food consumption and liquid intake in Wistar rats. Twenty rats were divided into two groups: the alcoholic group received sugarcane beverage (30%, v/v) and the non alcoholic one receveid tap water, during 120 days. After alcohol ingestion period, each group was subdivided into trained and untrained animals. The trained animals did swimming exercise for 8 weeks. During alcool intake period, alcoholic animals showed decreased body weight gain, reduced chow consumption and increased liquid intake. After alcool intake period, only alcoholized sedentary animals increased body weight. Both alcoholized groups decreased food comsuption and it was not observed differences in liquid intake among all groups. The results suggest that chronic alcohol intake provokes a metabolic desequilibrium and exercises are usefull in controling body mass during recovery period. However, this exercise protocol did not alter animal diet habits.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated possible changes in subjective reporting of sources and symptoms of stress (DALDA questionnaire) and session-RPE in response to an intensified training (12 days) during a preparation for international championships in young basketball players (male = 20 and female = 15).
Abstract: The aim of the present study was to investigate possible changes in subjective reporting of sources and symptoms of stress (DALDA questionnaire) and session-RPE in response to an intensified training (12 days) during a preparation for international championships in young basketball players (male = 20 and female =15). It was characterized two distinct phases. For session-RPE, the t test showed no difference between the two phases for males. For females, the first phase was more intense than the second (P < 0.05). Significant differences between phases for the Part B of the DALDA (symptoms of stress) have been demonstrated. There was greater number of responses “worse than normal” in Part B at the first phase for both groups. The findings suggest that the instruments used in the present investigation should provide an accurate representation of distinct reaction to stressful experiences in young basketball players, showing similar dynamics, especially within females.

TL;DR: Findings indicate that various physical components have a close relation with physical capacities; however, since different events have different characteristics, their correlations are significantly different.
Abstract: Basing their research subject on second string athletes in Shanghai, the authors probed into the relations between physical components and sports capacities of athletes of different events, hoping to provide a scientific criterion for athlete selection and sports training in the future. The authors performed physical component and aerobic and anaerobic capacity tests on 117 second string athletes (60 males and 57 females) of such three events as sprinting, bicycle racing and fencing, and revealed the following findings: basically there is a medium or high degree correlation between the body weight, muscle, protein and anaerobic capacity index of male and female athletes of the three events; there is a low degree correlation between the athlete’s total muscle and protein weight, body weight, and blood lactic acid; there is a low degree negative correlation between the body fat and anaerobic capacity related indexes of the athletes of the three events. The said findings indicate that various physical components have a close relation with physical capacities; however, since different events have different characteristics, their correlations are significantly different.
