TL;DR: This paper explored memoing in the context of qualitative research methodologies and explored several techniques for employing memo writing to enhance the research experience and outcomes, including data exploration, continuity of conception and contemplation, and communication.
Abstract: This paper explores memoing in the context of qualitative research methodologies. The functions of memos in the research process are discussed and a number of techniques for employing memo writing to enhance the research experience and outcomes are examined. Memoing is often discussed in the literature as a technique employed in grounded theory research, yet there is limited exploration of the value of memo writing in qualitative methodologies generally. Memoing serves to assist the researcher in making conceptual leaps from raw data to those abstractions that explain research phenomena in the context in which it is examined. Memos can be effectively employed by both the novice and experienced researcher as a procedural and analytical strategy throughout the research process. Data exploration is enhanced, continuity of conception and contemplation is enabled and communication is facilitated through the use of memoing. While guidelines exist to aid in the production and use of memos, memoing remains a flex...

TL;DR: The system offers a set of guiding principles, based on the fact that, because knowledge and practice change continually when caring for patients, clinical records should be flexible and dynamic to accommodate these changes.
Abstract: Integrated care pathways (ICPs) offer a system of multidisciplinary care planning based around the principle of clinical audit and on the knowledge and practice of local clinical staff. The system offers a set of guiding principles, based on the fact that, because knowledge and practice change continually when caring for patients, clinical records should be flexible and dynamic to accommodate these changes. Benefits to be gained from implementing ICPs include improvements in communication between all disciplines involved, as well as between patients and carers. Optimal levels of free text are ensured through the pre-printed record having an outcomes-based focus and through incorporating the idea of exception-based recording. Issues to be considered include individuality and confidentiality. Benefits to be gained include increased patient satisfaction, a reduction in documentation and inappropriate lengths of stay.

TL;DR: The proposed 16-step method of data analysis in this paper is a detailed description of analytical steps to be taken in directed qualitative content analysis that covers the current gap of knowledge in international literature regarding the practical process of qualitative data analysis.
Abstract: Qualitative content analysis consists of conventional, directed and summative approaches for data analysis. They are used for provision of descriptive knowledge and understandings of the phenomenon under study. However, the method underpinning directed qualitative content analysis is insufficiently delineated in international literature. This paper aims to describe and integrate the process of data analysis in directed qualitative content analysis. Various international databases were used to retrieve articles related to directed qualitative content analysis. A review of literature led to the integration and elaboration of a stepwise method of data analysis for directed qualitative content analysis. The proposed 16-step method of data analysis in this paper is a detailed description of analytical steps to be taken in directed qualitative content analysis that covers the current gap of knowledge in international literature regarding the practical process of qualitative data analysis. An example of "the resuscitation team members' motivation for cardiopulmonary resuscitation" based on Victor Vroom's expectancy theory is also presented. The directed qualitative content analysis method proposed in this paper is a reliable, transparent, and comprehensive method for qualitative researchers. It can increase the rigour of qualitative data analysis, make the comparison of the findings of different studies possible and yield practical results.

TL;DR: Mixed methods researchers may benefit from the opportunity to use such a dynamic approach to address the complex and multi-faceted research problems often encountered in the health care sector.
Abstract: Mixed methods research is viewed as the third methodological movement and as an approach it has much to offer health and social science research. Its emergence was in response to the limitations of the sole use of quantitative or qualitative methods and is now considered by many a legitimate alternative to these two traditions. Purists’ view of the dichotomy between positivist and non-positivist philosophies is prevalent; however, mixed methods afford researchers an opportunity to overcome this ‘false dichotomy’. The philosophical underpinning of pragmatism allows and guides mixed methods researchers to use a variety of approaches to answer research questions that cannot be addressed using a singular method. In particular, healthcare researchers may benefit from the opportunity to use such a dynamic approach to address the complex and multi-faceted research problems often encountered in the health care sector.

TL;DR: Making explicit the approach used for participant sampling provides improved methodological rigour as judged by the four aspects of trustworthiness provides a guide for novice researchers of how rigour may be addressed in qualitative research.
Abstract: BackgroundPurposive sampling has a long developmental history and there are as many views that it is simple and straightforward as there are about its complexity. The reason for purposive sampling ...
